  • Pakhto Mataloona

    Malgaro! Pakhto Mataloona ( Proverbs ) are integral part of our folklore. These are short but comprehensive sayings which have come down from one generation to another.People say these " Mataloona" to augment their point of view and to plead their contention. The International Centre for Pashto Studies Academy of Sciences of Afghanistan has published a book , " Pakhto Mataloona" with translation into Dari by Ustad Benawa and translation into English by A. M Shinwari. Let's enjoy a few with English translation;

    Abaa ma gora, khorjeen ye gora : Don't look for the father, look for his saddle-bag.( One is concerned only for one's own interest). When an elder of the family returns from a journey, it is usual for children to rush to look in his saddle-bag for gifts, while being unmindful of the father own wellbeing.

    Asoona yai naalawal, chendakho hum pkhey porta kre: The horses were being shoed, the frogs also liftted their feet. ( One will compete only with eligible and equal persons)

    Aseel ta asharat, kam asal ta kotak : A gesture is enough to a wise person, while ignoble needs a stick. ( A word is sufficient for a wise person/ noble person and for fools stick is necessary.) ----nor bya

    woba pa daang na byaleegi: Water can be divided by striking it with a stick. ( An organic unity can not be broken by voilent means )

    Woba che la sara tere shee, nu sa yawa neza ao sa dwa neze: If the water is surpassed your head, it is immaterial how much farther it rises. ( When it is impossible to deal with a a few difficulty, it is the same with many)

    Owrbashe ka sal mana pa ropai shee, da khra pake yawa lapa da: When a hundred weight of barley goes for one rupee, the share of the ass is still only a handful. ( A person of no account can never pretend to more than his meritsdeserve.)
