KABUL (Pajhwok): Some Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Wednesday asked presidential runners Dr. Abdullah Abdullah to apologise to the people he dubbed as lambs.
In an audio tape released by the Reform and Unanimity team, led by Abdullah, former IEC secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel is heard having a conversation with several individuals.
In a portion of the conversation, one man asks another to take the lambs to the mountains, graze them and bring them back.
Abdullah’s team has claimed this is Amarkhel’s voice, asking his interlocutor to stuff the ballot boxes in favour of the rival candidate Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.
For his part, Amarkhel has rejected the tape as a conspiracy. With regard to the conversation, Abdullah said a few days back: “The votes he (Ghani) has polled outnumber the lambs in that province.”
During a general session today, lawmakers lashed out at Abdullah’s remarks. A legislator from central Logar province said Abdullah should apologise to the people for his insulting utterances.
Mohammad Akbar Stanikzai added: “Now that people have not cast votes for him, Abdullah has described them as lambs.”
A public representative of the Kuchi tribe, Heelai Irshad, said: “Nobody reserves the right to insult people and call them lambs.”Abdullah, therefore, should say sorry to the people, she asked.
Kamal Nasir Osuli from Khost province asked the presidential candidate not to intervene in the affairs of the election commissions.
But Fazal Rehman Orya, a member of Abdullah’s camp, spurned the allegation and denied his leader had ever used such a derogatory word as lambs for the Afghan people.
Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, without participating in this debate, stressed the people expected fair results from the election commissions. He stressed the preliminary and final results be announced in accordance with IEC schedule.
According to the commission’s timeline, the preliminary results will be unveiled on July 2 and the final outcome on July 22.
