  • Books/Articles on Women in Pashtunwali & Islam's Role in it

    Hey, guys!

I'm writing a research paper that highlights the status of women in Pashtunwali.... If anyone can please recommend to me some books, articles, or other texts that discuss women in Pashtunwali -- preferably with regards to the concept of honor, how Pukhtuns' understanding of the concept has evolved during the last some centuries, and what role Islam has played in shaping Pashtunwali -- I would greatly appreciate it.

    Heartfelt mananas in advance!

It seems like women had a good role in Pashtun literature.

LOL! I so did NOT make his blood boil :p It's not my fault he constantly came on the board saying "women are inferior to men, and God says so in the Quran!" LOL. You can't possibly say that to Qrratugai and think you'll get away with it, lol. :D

It's interesting you say that, I've heard many South Asains and even Pashtuns themselves talk about how strict the men in our culture are with their women and thus stereotype us in that sense.

To be honest I think our men are quite strict with us, it can be difficult, but it's sometime for the best. It's good our people have honour and izzat.

I once cam across a quote that I think is very relevant to what's being discussed here, what with Pukhtun men being very strict and how that's "good" in the opinion of some of us here.

                            Here:

"Relationships -- of all kinds -- are like sand held in your hand. Held loosely, with an open hand, the sand remains where it is. The minute you close your hand and squeeze tightly to hold on, the sand trickles through your fingers. You may hold onto some of it, but most will be spilled. A relationship is like that. Held loosely, it is likely to remain intact. But hold too tightly, too possessively, and the relationship slips away and is lost."

I completely agree with this quote. We need to balance things out, communicate amongst each other, hear what the others involved in our relationships have to say about how we treat them and about how WE wanna be treated, and only then, I believe, can we have harmony. Too much strictness for one party while too much freedom for the other is not balance, it's not natural, and it is bound to create disharmony and arouse injustice in the society.

Besides, each of us has a different idea of what "izzat" and "respect" mean. I mean, I know some Pukhtun families who think that to educate a girl is be-izzati (dishonor) for the family! So we must ask, where do we draw the line?

I mean, sometimes we might THINK that we're doing something for THEIR own good, but that's only assuming that they don't know what's good for them, right?
