we make our ferni with semolina/suji flour and decorate it with pistachios only. our version of kheer is a sweet rice dish that used to be coloured orange and pink back in the days but is served white these days.
but i like the pakistani version better with the rose water and saffron flavour. rosewater is overwhelming everywhere else but not when used in a dessert.

^ is there a Afghan version of the Kheer, or is it same?
Firni is orginally a Persian dessert from modern Iran/Afghanistan. To sum things up, when our Tajik-Turkic-Pashtun ancestors invaded your land, we imposed on you our language, our faith, our culture, our government and our cuisine.
You are welcome.

I can't believe it. This is a thread about Firni, and you made it about racial domination lol.

In short he wants to say Afghanistan is messed up since 40 years and nothing to show for today . So I have to bring up the fact that we invaded your land 600 years ago to make up for the embarassement that Afghanistan is today . They have to cling on to the what happened 700 years ago how else are they going to remain relevant ?
The most famous quote in Afghan media since decades is " Afghanistan 5000 kaal tareekh lari " . Translation Afghanistan has 5000 years history . Because they are left so far behind the rest of the world that they have to seek solace in past to feel good .

Idiot, Kheer is atleast 4000 years old and has been used in Hindu tradition since then, (kheer) the word itself is Sanskrit, most likely Kheer was invented in Kashmir, Kashmiries make the best ones in my experience
I prefer Kheer ro Phirni as well. There is a subtle difference but Kheer is more falvourful while Phirni is abit bland.
There is another Rice dish called "Sheer birinj" which literally translated from farsi means milk rice, we mainly make it during Ashura or for other religious or cultural occassions.
I saw a Chinese version of it the other day. They cook the rice separately from the milk and mix them before breaking an egg inside the bowel just before serving it. Sprinkled with pistachios, cardamons and all..

Shir birinj is also a popular dessert in Europe and South America.

I must take exception to this. In the pantheon of dessert, Kheer is an embarrassment. Phirni has some substance to it, some solidity and the pistachios on it only add to it.
I just think that if the Italians have Tiramasu and the Americans have carrot cake and the French have Crème broulee ... kheer is this horrible horrible primitive creation that offers nothing up and is a regional embarrassment to Indians.

^ what the hell are you talking about? also there is no one type of kheer, the dessert is regional based in India, I have no idea which one you had. Some people make amazing Kheer, others make terrible, depends on who is making it, like any other dessert. Some of the best ones you will find are in local small dhabas in Pakistan/India, served in clay pots like these, they taste amazing and fresh

I've had some very very bad versions of it perhaps. But I have had them at different places and times regionally abroad dining with Indian colleagues (never in India) and the runny taste was very similar. Its that lack of consistency in texture that is problematic. I just think it isn't that complex or demanding in its design or make up and its sort of a cheap sugar fix without much thought put into it.
Are you really telling me that if you take Tiramasu (non alcoholic obviously) and you compare the complexity used in making that vs Kheer that Kheer is not an embarrassment as an attempt to enter the dessert pantheon?
Phirni can at least offer an increased consistency and as a go it alone dish its texture matches some of those Turkish milk pudding desserts that are also great stand lones without the need for pistachio or other cover up jobs to make up for the poorly designed base.
