Do you mean at Birthday parties? I think it is more of a western thing that Indians learned

As if you was some upper class posho a few years ago in Afghanistan eating with a knife and fork. Yeah right, don't act like you've never seen it before to seem more western. Phoney

I have never seen any westerners do that. Even when other people eat cake with their hands, they hold it neatly and actually eat it. But Indians have their fingers covered in the frosting and rub it in each other's faces more than they eat it. It's like they are playing with it. And then I once saw an older lady artfully take this tiny piece and smear it on someone's face during a birthday bash once. I am so confused. If it's a tradition, there has to be a significance behind it. If not, why are they wasting cake!?.

its USA custom. indians might been copying americans. you hear when in Rome do as the Romans do? indians are open minds not closed shut minds.

Why do Indians often smear a person's birthday cake on his/her face? - Quora

it's a western thing and elite indians usually imitate westerners, like many other cultures, though yes Indians seem to be doing this more
