you lived there, when?Originally posted by Wahe Guru View PostSome of the best tasting butter milk I ever had was in Saudi Arabia, local made though I am sure the cows would have originated elsewhere probably in Europe. I used to drink gallons of it when I was there.
It's called Laban over there

i was in alkhobar(thuqba) in the 70s and then butter milk came in tetrapacks, red graphics, and in rabic it was called laban haleeb. now in dubai, same butter milk is called just 'laban', and the laban comes in two varieties, almost liquid and other much thicker. the one produced by the saudi company 'almarai' is probably the best, thick and refreshing. i drink the low fat version - amazing.Originally posted by Wahe Guru View PostSome of the best tasting butter milk I ever had was in Saudi Arabia, local made though I am sure the cows would have originated elsewhere probably in Europe. Thanks..i know Thuqba well enough! I was in Dhahran in the 90s. I am sure the butter milk I liked was from "Almarai" company. Agree with you it is amazing in taste. Other companies...did not taste same or come close.Originally posted by torkham View Posti was in alkhobar(thuqba) in the 70s and then butter milk came in tetrapacks, red graphics, and in rabic it was called laban haleeb. now in dubai, same butter milk is called just 'laban', and the laban comes in two varieties, almost liquid and other much thicker. the one produced by the saudi company 'almarai' is probably the best, thick and refreshing. i drink the low fat version - amazing.

In Canada or UK - ready made buttermilk not equal in taste to almarai.
Almarai buttermilk is well recommended to try for anyone traveling in the area. But it is possible to make something similar in taste from right tasting yogurt maybe with a little milk added..
Another drink I really liked was a mango juice from a company in Bahrain. It was claimed to be 100% juice. My guess is it was Pakistani mangoes (or a bit of suger added in).

I lived in Saudi in the 90s. Long ago now!Originally posted by Karachi View Post^ I accidentally drank a whole bottle of butter milk yesterday when I created this thread and Yeah I dont feel good
I prefer Lassi or Ayran yogurt based drinks
Maybe what you drank was past its use date? Or too sour? In Canada it is not same tasting as the one I and Torkham mentioned in Saudi Arabia.
Lassi is thinner and very refreshing in a hot climate. You can make nice drink from right tasting yogurt mixed with some milk (low fat or skimmed).
