Having lived in Europe and North America, I generally find attitudes to what is/isn't Halal differ. For example, many Americans believe that beef meat is halal and if it is prepared by "people of the book" more so. In the UK, Muslims tend to consider meat halal ONLY if slaughtered through the zabihah method. Hence in the US, it was always a source of amusement that my uncle/aunt would pick out their chickens/red meat from the cold counter at Walmart, whereas folk in Europe wouldn't necessarily do that. Similarly surrounded by practising "bearded"/"hijabed" Muslims in various US cities, I found they had no hang up in eating McDonald's or having chicken/beef filling in their subs. Fish was down to taste, and a last resort, in many instances.

Up to this point this has been rather the opposite in Europe, even though there is an alarming 80% margin of error in some instances on whether some meats traded by Muslim butchers are zabihah or not. Its a continuing debate.

A couple of years back whilst on vacation in the Alps, my Mrs insisted on meat avoidance. Goulash, a kind of beef stew was a popular serving in the mountains and fish was rare - so you can imagine how dull swiss cheese sandwiches can get after a couple of days at high altitude.

Here in the Gulf, everyone is very much in McPlasticFood, pretty much all the time. The debate about halal/haraam here is rather different and is linked to politics. The ministries regulate food import so it has to be compatible with their definition of halal. Beef gelatine is halal, since it is bone, not meat. In any case, corned beef is plentiful and their fresh meats are imported from Brazil, Australia etc.

The meat of people of the book being halaal does not apply to American meat we can find outside... it is not debated issue, some people just like to have their mcdonald double cheese burger regardless of what majority of the scholars agree upon.

the meat product in most of the western countries (i can't speak for all) are not from animal killed according to orthodox christian values. the animal goes through a cutting machine where their head is cut off in a matter of seconds. and that type of sudden/shock death makes the meat haram because the blood does not drain out.

now there are Kosher meat products that come animal slaughtered according to old jewish zabiha method, which is the same as how muslims slaughter the meat. personally i do not eat kosher meat either, but that type of meat is acceptible for a muslims consumption.

don't fool urself with meat in US market being "christian" meat. the meat products found in market have nothing to do with christians or christianity... lets be real, the companies that deliver massive amount of meat to market are not going to hire a personal slaughter man for every cow or sheep.

From what I remember in a college class I took about ethics, the way a cow is slaughtered is first a brain-damaging blow is given, the throat is slit, then animal is then hung upside down and it's blood is drained as it is being hoisted for processing.

Chickens get the shock treatment to the brain, hung upside down, drained and boiled.

after reading of cows getting smashed on the head and their blood getting drenched out, I don't feel like eating.

So, who wants to fight over why women don't get to slaughter animals??

I would if that were true. You need to verify your source of information because women can slaughter animals and animals sluaghtered by women is halal.

There is a hadith where a slave girl slaughters a sheep. The man asks Muhammad (PBUH) if he can it eat. Muhammad (PBUH) said that any meat slaughtered by anyone of the book regardless or gender or race in the name of Allah is permissable to eat.

If you mean from a cultural perspective then you can have that 'fight' with someone else.

Hah. You value yourself too highly. If someone asks a question and I know the answer then I will give that answer. Despite what you may think I do not set out to annoy you when I am online. If me stating facts is somehow 'annoying' in your mind then you just have to let me know and I won't refer to you again on these forums.
