  • Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

    Dear members,

I am an undergraduate Math student. I have always wondered if there are any other Mathematics and Physics enthusiasts with similar cultural backgrounds as myself.

I don't mean interested in Brian Greene's Elegant universe. I am looking for a more professional type of interest.

    Hi Behzad,
    I am a Math major.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

      , I love you.

What are you doing your Masters on Aseer Jan? I am at UWO.

Admin Khan, you are the Admin eh? I am going to go on a hunch and assume you are also a CS major?

      I really like Number Theory.

I'm not an Admin, I am more like chowkidaar.

I admire the number theory. I am planning to get a Ph.D in Mathematics, I want to teach Math.

Be more descriptive on what you like and what you plan to do with Math. Are you a CS major? We have a member who is getting his Ph.D in CS soon, he might be able to assist you.

I am not a CS major, I stayed away from computers all my life. I recently learned LaTeX, and have just began working with php, html, and mysql for some projects for my brother.

I have always been interested in Math. I tried my hand at biology (for the possibility of Medicine) concurrently with my Math major. Medicine isn't for me, I realized this after my burn out in third year. I took a year off to relax and travel.

I did a little bit of jumping around at the beginning. I taught myself Elementary Number Theory and Group Theory in first year and the summer of it. I took Galois Theory in second year. Ended up skipping Real Analysis, and took Complex instead in second year and Measure Theory in third along with Complex 2. I skipped Linear Algebra too, and now I need to take the courses I skipped to get a degree, so I am doing that. I did Real 1 and 2 this summer as reading courses.

I really like the 3n+1 problem, trying to prove a recursive relation I noticed that I don't think has yet been spotted (maybe), and I have a conjecture in Group Theory too.

I also like theoretical Physics, I did a little the two core courses in 2nd year and EM for third. I also did a lot of Medical Physics but that's not that relevant.

I have tried teaching myself GR, it is tough. I have made some headway, but not too much.

This year will be a sort of coming back to rediscover what I love about Math. I too possibly want a Ph.D in Mathematics. I am also however interested in Physics, and I would like to try for Perimeter Institute for a Masters as well.

The bain of my existence has been trying to defend my major, and also hearing people say that Sediq Afghan is Afghanistan's best Mathematician.

          What year are you in?

That is interesting, I being more of an IT guy always had a strong interest in CS. Its interesting how CS has changed many aspects of our lives.

We have an eloquent lady by the name of gulalai here who could change your mind.

Oh interesting, this is my topic. I love discussing this with like-minded people.

Sediq Afghan? Tell me more about him. I think you should go for it. Where do you currently reside if you don't mind me asking me?

Well, I live in Toronto (parents live here). I am studying in London, Ontario. I will be leaving to start school in a day or two.

Have you worked with any of the problems in Project Euler? I have been thinking about learning python as I try to solve those.

It was definitely wrong, it burnt me out in combination with the overloading. I am familiar with the concepts through self study in the earlier courses.

What is the focus of your masters, if you don't mind me asking?

Of course, and we can share too .

Well, a lot of my trouble came when I hit wall after wall trying to teach myself GR. Do you have any experience with that?

I will type some of the open problems I am currently working on, when I get home.

Afghanlady, math is fun, and interest in it is awesome.

Are you in university now? Which one if you don't mind me asking?

Dreamer, I have missed you my friend.

Behzad, pe khair raghley au akhtar de mubarak.

I was very keen on doing my Masters in Mathematical Sciences. Unfortunately, they've changed the course requirements for that which are now an undergrad in any science or education degree. Unfortunately, I have neither, but I would have loved to have gone ahead with that. I am in the hope that those requirements will change, once again.

Awesome, and Eid Mubarak to you too Mahzala. What did you do your undergraduate in? I know your avatar, I think.

Samima, it depends. What are you studying? What year are you in? Do you like physics? What courses in physics have you taken so far? Of course I would recommend it because I like it, but you have to ask yourself if you like it.

Samima, well, if you are not planing to do any other minors, might as well take the second year course .

It wasn't harder than the first year for me, it actually seemed a tad easier, specially the second section (for me that was introduction to Quantum Mechanics).

Mahzala, I vaguely remember seeing it on another forum I frequent.
