LONDON (AFP) - God no longer has any place in theories on the creation of the Universe due to a series of developments in physics, British scientist Stephen Hawking said in extracts published Thursday from a new book.

In a hardening of the more accommodating position on religion that he took in his 1988 international best-seller "A Brief History of Time", Hawking said the Big Bang was merely the consequence of the law of gravity.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist," he writes in "The Grand Design", which is being serialised by The Times newspaper.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going," added the wheelchair-bound expert.

Hawking has achieved worldwide fame for his research, writing and television documentaries despite suffering since the age of 21 motor neurone disease that has left him disabled and dependent on a voice synthesiser.

In "A Brief History of Time", Hawking had suggested that the idea of God or a divine being was not necessarily incompatible with a scientific understanding of the Universe.

But in his latest work, Hawking cites the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star outside our own Solar System as a turning point against Isaac Newton's belief that the Universe could not have arisen out of chaos.


"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass -- far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he wrote.


Hawking argued earlier this year that mankind's only chance of long-term survival lies in colonising space, as humans drain Earth of resources and face a terrifying array of new threats.


He also warned in a recent television series that mankind should avoid contact with aliens at all costs, as the consequences could be devastating.

I read the news as well, as he mentioned in 1988 that it is essential for this universe to have God for its creation.
it is his opinion and we respect his opinion and courage for saying this, because he felt like this, but it does not mean, that Hawkin is the decessive personality in this universe to decide about God existence or non-existence. Many people before him also said the same thing. He mentioned especially the force of gravity and repulsive and attractive forces. One thing really amaze me while reading Quran, that although Muhammad was an illitrate person, but as Quran mentioned that,
See how we suspended th sky with the supports which are not visible, as Muhammad PBUH was not a scientist and he could not know what are these supports, but for sure it were these centripetal and centrifugal forces and gravity forces which keep the whole nature in suspended and nothing is going wrong.
But the system is so perfect that one think, that no need for God to run the system. However, this itself is a proof that how haphazard things appeared in such an organized manner.

This person is probably high on drugs. How can there be gravity if there is nothing? Is he saying that gravity was there before anything else?

Shlombay, If you will read my first post, then you will know that i am no way against God existence and i believe 100% in God existence, however, to deny the opposite opinion needs a way.
Hawkin own statement have a space for God, and we should use it, not by saying he is alcoholic, this and that.

Shlombay brother, may I ask you, on what scientific grounds you have conlcuded that God does exist? We have heard from the prophets and we being Muslims have got this knowledge through Quran. Have you any scientific reason Quran being the Book of God? Have you any scientific ground for Muhammad being the prophet of Allah. All answers will be definitely in negative. However, we believe, prophet Muhammad as the prophet, as he did not tell a lie in his whole life span, he was an honest person of the time, and above all an illiterate person, who could not read his name and then created such a nice book, it gave us a clue that he was the right person, and what he was saying will be true, therefore we believe it. No one of us have observed God (Allah) till now, however we believe because we are taught.
If you go on scientific grounds, then you will have to produce a solid visible reason for existence or non-existence of anything inclduign God, angels, Jannat, dozakh, qayamat, life, spirit etc. Therefore that Hawkin after seeing the perfection of the system concluded (although he is not the final authority on this topic) that it is so perfect that it does not need any operator. But his mind did not go towards the creation and bringing this system towards perfection. We can reason on this issue from this angle. But for God sake, again for God sake, dont blame people athiest (If I am atheist then if you call me athiest or muslim, it does not change my status) because it hurts me and same goes to others. Respect for each other ideas, opinion, religion, ethnicity and personalities. Allah says in Holly Quran,
And dont call their God whom they worhsip without God with bad names, as they will curse your Allah, then it means you are cursing Allah yourself, and you dont know it.

Therefore we should know how to tolerate and hear the opponents view. I am Alhamdolillah Muslim and I consider Islam the best option for me, although I respect other religions as well, because these are respectable for their followers.

If Hawkin says, God does not exist, will it destroy the kingdom of God? No way, because we believe if all the human beings turn against his existence, nothing will happen to Him the Almighty.

it reminds me of a good story


Once upon a time a man came to the barber to cut his hair.. so while fixing his hair the barber asked the man.. are u into some religion? The man said yes i am a Muslim.. then he asked the barber.. what about u ? Barber said.. i dont beleive in God.. God doesnt exist.....If there was God, there wouldnt be disease,there wouldnt be hardtimes, there wouldnt be fights and all the negative stuff..

The muslim kept quiet for a while and then saw this man outside with long dirty hair and beard.. his face,mostaches,beard,long hair had hidden his face completly and he was looking Yuck... So the muslim said.. Barber doesnt exist
