The star-faced mole does not bite at all. It feeds on insects and crustanceans. It is active during the day as well as night. There are some 22 tentacles protruding out from its unusual snout. These tentacles are highly sensitive in detecting its prey. You would be surprised to know that they detect the prey in some 220 milliseconds!!!Originally posted by Admin Khan View PostGulalai,

It is the very unique animal: it is the only animal species in its genus and it is present in Canada as well as USA.Originally posted by Son of Mountains View PostAw kana. I wish 2 see it closely"O Pakhtuns!, Your house has fallen into ruin, let us rebuild it".

Lol@ pure sexim.Originally posted by eusuphxai View PostWhy is it everyone referring to it as "he" that is pure sexism, where are all the meninist (I know i love to make words).
@topic Its not ugly its unique and not frighting at all
I could cite a reason: We would accept an ugly man but not an ugly woman since women have to be beautiful.Since an ugly She-star-faced mole did not look appropriate to the males here (since "he" would not want to harm the "she feelings" which could in turn hurt "he's feelings",lol) and women would never even think of replacing it She-star-faced mole, so hence the reason for sexism, which is pretty unintentional here. So we can consider it as "it" then to avoid harming the sensibilties.
But that is what the scientists are trying to figure out by studying these ugly-beautiful animals. Why have they been neglected for studies by even scientists who tend to study Lions, monkeys, elephants but not ugly animals? Is it something related to the traditional beauty bias of our mind which is used to feel great about seeing beautiful birds, butterflies, white cats and furious dogs? Will the Star-faced mole more acceptable to Afghanlady if it was something of blue color rather than pink, fleshy that it is now? Does the pink, fleshy tentacles remind us of the pink flesh of our body???
Happy thinking!Last edited by PFgulalai; 08-10-2010, 10:29 PM."O Pakhtuns!, Your house has fallen into ruin, let us rebuild it".

Originally posted by AfghanladyThat animal is scaring me. any info on him?
Star-nosed moles are easily identified by the eleven pairs of pink fleshy appendages ringing their snout which are used as a touch organ with more than 25,000 minute sensory receptors, known as Eimer’s organs, with which this hamster-sized mole feels its way around. The star-nosed mole lives in wet lowland areas in USA and Canada and eats small invertebrates, aquatic insects, worms and mollusks.
The mole's most distinctive feature is a circle of 22 mobile, pink, fleshy tentacles at the end of the snout, from which they derive their name. These are used to identify food by touch, such as worms, insects and crustaceans. Its brain decides in the ultra short time of 8 ms if a prey is comestible or not.
