Mark Humayun receives the National Medal of Technology and Innovation
President Obama presents the prestigious honor recognizing contributions to American ingenuity and quality of life

President Barack Obama awarded University Professor Mark Humayun, co-director of the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute and director of the USC Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics, the nation’s highest award for achievement in technology during a ceremony at the White House.

Humayun received the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation four months after a winter storm caused the planned January event to be rescheduled.

In a press release issued by the White House, Obama stated, “Science and technology are fundamental to solving some of our nation’s biggest challenges. The knowledge produced by these Americans today will carry our country’s legacy of innovation forward and continue to help countless others around the world. Their work is a testament to American ingenuity.”

Humayun, who is one of nine recipients of the medal this year, was chosen for his lifelong dedication to bridging medical science and engineering to restore sight. He holds more than 100 issued patents and patent applications — most in the area of bioimplants for ophthalmology.

His innovative work is best exemplified by the development of the Argus II, the only Food and Drug Administration-approved retinal prosthesis system that allows those with certain blinding diseases to regain some useful vision.

“I am very honored to receive the National Medal of Technology and Innovation,” said Humayun, president elect of the American Society of Retina Specialists. “Medical breakthroughs such as the Argus II come after long periods of research and development, and I am grateful to have been and continue to be surrounded by teams of very talented individuals.”

The National Medal of Technology and Innovation, presented by U.S. presidents since 1980, recognizes those who have made lasting contributions to America’s competitiveness and quality of life and helped strengthen the nation’s technological workforce.

Humayun, who holds joint appointments at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, is the first Cornelius Pings Professor of Biomedical Sciences and professor of ophthalmology, biomedical engineering, and cell and neurobiology at USC.

I read somewhere he is Khattak but don't have conclusive evidence about his father's ethnicity.

Khattaks have generally surnames of Khattak, he doesnt have it...........his maternal grandfather is famous Aslam Khattak of Karak who invented the name of Pakistan (he was in the team of Chaudri Rahmat Ali)......the guy is Punjabi though

"MH: My grandfather Lt. Col. Dr Ilahi Bakhsh, MD, MRCP, was born in 1904 in Chak Mughlani, district Jullundur, East Punjab to a family of eye specialist Hakims. A direct ancestor had been the personal physician to the ruler of the Punjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. At age 43, he became the first Muslim to be appointed principal of King Edward Medical College in Lahore at a time when the entire British and Hindu faculty had just left Pakistan after Partition. Dr Ilahi Bakhsh led the Herculean task of not only rebuilding the college, but also leading the development of medical education throughout Pakistan. "

MH: My maternal grandmother, Tasleem Khattak, started to go blind from complications of diabetes during my medical school and it made me decide to go into ophthalmology and to develop cures for blindness. By the way, my maternal grandfather was Mohammad Aslam Khan Khattak, who was the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (then NWFP) under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and later the Speaker of the National Assembly under Ziaul Haq.

Its interesting to see that these elites of KPK, the boot-lickers of Angraiz who also worked in Muslim league of Jinnah.....have given their daughters to the elites of Punjabis..........none of these elites and Khans consider it proper to give their daughter to some decent educated man of humble background from their area.....i think Saifullah family from my district, who were also feces who served angraiz, has also given their daughters to elites of Punjab.

He maybe a Pashtun ethnically, but not culturally. The thing I have noticed is when Pashtuns get out of their region / culture, they become successful in many cases, since they are hard workers. It happens to Pashtun diaspora in India, Middle East, West etc.... Some thing about tribal culture keeps them backwards, of course Pakistani or Afghan government doesn't help them either

I don't want to talk too openly because we have enemies like rooh2 here to lurk and gather information about us. BUt You might be disturbed by some of the Afghan stories I have to tell you.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Brother I am not your enemy. We Arayn chadhrys are friends of pakhtoons. This doctor grandfather was Ilahi baksh from Jullunder, my ancestral home town. He is our relative, our family still have his photo.

Here I just scanned it for you.

It's not about giving or taking daughters, we are muslims. But even you wouldn't give your daughter to poor from Afghanistan if much better option was available and only difference was language. I know you will deny it now and take high stand but if you was father and had daughter then you will understand.

Bacha Khan gave his daughter to sikh, now that was indeed crossing the limit and brought shame to muslims all over south asia.

                    just my 6 cents

                    peace and god bless Afghanistan

I used to know an Arain Choudhry on PDF once.

He looked like any other crotch scratching jali wali topi wearing 200 buck fake RayBan flaunting landya from Bishti mohalla or Pala galli.

What's so special about them. Half Pakis are anyways low caste Indian (Hindu) converts. The other half are Iranic converts.

                        Kamjor khoon.

                        Cheers, Doc
