They've got lots of ancient statues/Buddha's in Kabul Museum - somehow they've survived.

Someone who was a curator's assistant at Kabul Museum told me that after the fall of the Taliban, when westerners got to Bamyan, they picked up fragments of pottery and jewellery that were thousands of years old and pieced them together back in London and New York. Those pieces fetched big bucks and sit in private collections, with none of the beneficiaries being Afghan.

The excuse of preservation allowed people to well and truly manipulate the situation for their own greed.
