this is how the western scientists steal from others. once they have the patent they can then make money from it.Originally posted by Toramana View Post
if someone has a patent on a virus or an aspect of it, a normal doctor might not legally, be able to treat that person and the patient may have to then pay a lot of money to a medical facility connected to the patent holder, for treatment.
that has happened here.
also in australia, new intellectual property rights had to be issued, to protect against scientists gaining knowledge from aboriginals about medicinal plants, then patenting them or aspects of the plant.

Philippines learns lessons on biopiracy
By JENNY F. MANONGDO
March 11, 2007, 8:00am
Instead of benefitting from its own medicinal plants, the country is letting foreigners make money from the sale of these medicinal wonders after these foreign manufacturers were able to secure the patents for these plants – a classic case of biopiracy.
But local herbal and drug experts have learned their lessons. To counter the inroads of foreign pirates, these local experts have started taking action so that no more Philippine medicinal plants will suffer the fate that befell the country’s ylang-ylang plant and Milagrosa rice.
Ylang-ylang is used in the manufacture of perfumes while the Milagrosa rice is a high-quality and aromatic rice variety.
International manufacturers have reaped billions in profits using these two original Philippine products.
