there is a light beemed at water that is streaming down works.
by playing with the flicking light you can create an illusion that there are these seperate waters drops while in fact its just flowing water.

same illusion where rotating wheel of car appears to be rotating backwards slowly.

same way mechanics determine car engine speed. the fan belt has a paint mark which appears to drifts when strobe is lit on it.
