  • Objectives of Art

Any piece of art is created to achieve the following objectives......or a combination of them depending upon the purpose for creating that piece of art...

    Functionalism:
    • It means ‘fitness for the purpose’.
    • Homes should give maximum service, comfort and pleasure with minimum care. Indoor & outdoor places are planned & furnished based on function.
    • Furniture is grouped in functional units for study, conversation, taking meals etc.
    • Selection of individual articles should be a critical judgment of how well they fulfill their functions.
    • There are a few common mistakes made by consumers. They select objects which are not fit for their purpose. E.g. Lamp throwing light in the reader’s eyes, vases that tip easily etc.
    • The form/shape that will function best is usually the one that looks best. E.g round bangles are more comfortable than square shaped or triangular bangles.
    • Home that does not permit its occupants to find peace, comfort & relaxation is not functioning well.
    • Sometimes function may be modified for the sake of appearance (beauty), and cost. e. g. synthetic clothes are not very comfortable in Mumbai but we do use them for appearance & easy maintenance. e. g. smoke mirror used in mainly for beauty & not to see reflection (is not clear)
    • Form of an object follows function. The material should also follow the function of the object. e.g. Garden furniture should be waterproof.
    .....to be continued...

    Beauty:
    • Beauty is defined as a combination of qualities that is pleasing to the trained eye or ear.
    • Every person has natural ability to recognize beauty. This talent of recognizing beauty can be developed by study, observation and experience.
    • Standards of beauty are broad & flexible.
    • Philosophy of Beauty is known as “Aesthetics”. The talent to recognize beauty is termed as aesthetic sense.
    • Study of the art elements and the art principles develops the ability to judge all kinds of objects.
    • This knowledge enables a consumer to distinguish between beauty and mere fashion, which is a valuable asset when new things appear and ideas change.

      Expressiveness:
      • Every work of art should be expressive. Every art piece should carry in itself at least one message of cheer or rest or power etc.
      • Splashing of many colors in a picture shows happiness, use of neutral colors for expressing sad mood.
      • Expressiveness of Home décor is character of the home or personality of the home. The following are some of the ideas that are expressed in homes, consciously or unconsciously: repose, naturalness, sophistication, intimacy, warmth, coolness, delicacy, strength, freshness, antiquity etc.
      • The four themes of home decoration are Formality, Informality, Naturalness, and Modernism.
      • Honesty & sincerity should be expressed in every piece of art. It is expressed also in the avoidance of dishonest things like imitation fireplaces, imitation coal or logs, imitation wood, stone, or plaster, and imitation flame on imitation candles.
