  • What is Art????

Art is any creative expression. Art is a part of our daily living and knowledge of art will help us to do simple things more beautifully. Art can be classified as Audio, Visual, Audio-visual,

Consumers use power to choose & judge ‘art’ or beauty of an item. Good taste is the application of the principles of design to the problems in life where appearances as well as utility are considered. Good taste is doing unconsciously the right thing, at right time, in the right way. (It is the quality of inner soul that gives a bias to the intellect.)

Good taste is inborn gift and can be acquired through practice, learning and observation. It also refers to the ability of a person to choose proper things to create attractive and harmonious composition. Good taste is moulded by things that surround us & family taste.

Our choice may represent a compromise due to unavailability, budget, likes and dislikes of others etc. Art brings happiness in our lives. Ability & knowledge /information are required not only for the creation but also for application of art.

Art is in the eye of the beholder, what is junk to me could be art to another because it could have meaning to someone else. For me nothing is more beautifull than natural beauty that surounds us, sometimes we dont notice it but its always there.

that Beauty....Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder......not every piece of art is beautiful........of course there are individual differences when it comes to beauty....

        whats Art was my Question???

according to many only something beautiful is a piece of art.....

any creative expression is art.....who designs a piece of art? A designer...

what art now? if i am an interior design...the work i do is art (designing interiors)....if i am a fashion designer...the work i do is art (design clothes)....if i am a crockery designer...what i do is art (design crockery)

everything u see around is beautifulllllll.....it isn't about natural beauty......its about creative art.....

the art that i mentioned above namely interior design, fashion and crockery, not only creation is important but application of these pieces are also important.....

now keeping in mind the utility and beauty aspect do u always choose the correct things..... something that is fit for the purpose....

our homes are filled with things which we buy because we find them beautiful but not usefulll.....

Thats Beauty again......all experts will identify pieces of art......to an amateur it might be different depending upon individual's likes and dislike.....

if u talk about accessories then what i may like u may not like....but when utility comes in what u choose becomes important.....whther u pay attention to beauty or utility.....

but Art is beyond music, painting and writing......thats personal absolutely yes....

but what u wear?????? doesnt that involve knowledge of art??? what u choose, something that enhances your personality......

what u choose for ur bedroom.....just an example of personal profile of people here in PF....makes me go blind......what do u say??????

Someone designed that. It is art. Your shoes are art. Your coffee cup is art. All functional design, well done, is art. Well said GoPashtunGo......

                      Functionalism and Beauty.....

depends on the purpose for which u choose the product...

in some products we desire only beauty...

for some only functionalism but often we get carried away so much by the beauty that we dont pay attention to the functional aspects... and our homes are full of such things..

in some products we want beauty and functionalism both.....but we again get carried away by beauty...

Basically there are three Objectives of creating any piece of Art.....
                        - Functionalism
                        - Beauty
                        - pressiveness

                        Functionalism:
                        • It means ‘fitness for the purpose’.
                        • Homes should give maximum service, comfort and pleasure with minimum care. Indoor & outdoor places are planned & furnished based on function.
                        • Furniture is grouped in functional units for study, conversation, taking meals, etc.
                        • Selection of individual articles should be a critical judgment of how well they fulfill their functions.
                        • There are a few common mistakes made by consumers. They select objects which are not fit for their purpose. E.g. Lamp throwing light in the reader’s eyes, vases that tip easily etc.
                        • The form/shape that will function best is usually the one that looks best. E.g round bangles are more comfortable than square shaped or triangular bangles.
                        • Home that does not permit its occupants to find peace, comfort & relaxation is not functioning well.
                        • Sometimes function may be modified for the sake of appearance (beauty), and cost. e. g. synthetic clothes are not very comfortable in Mumbai but we do use them for appearance & easy maintenance. e.. smoked mirror used in mainly for beauty & not to see reflection (is not clear)
                        • Form of an object follows function.

                              What is an Art?????

                              WHAT IS ARTS

                              INTRODUCTION:
ART has not always been what we think it is today. An object regarded as Art today may not have been perceived as such when it was first made, nor was the person who made it necessarily regarded as an artist. Both the notion of "art" and the idea of the "artist" are relatively modern terms.
Many of the objects we identify as art today -- Greek painted pottery, medieval manuscript illuminations, and so on -- were made in times and places when people had no concept of "art" as we understand the term. These objects may have been appreciated in various ways and often admired, but not as "art" in the current sense.
ART lacks a satisfactory definition. It is easier to describe it as the way something is done -- "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others" -- rather than what it is.
The idea of an object being a "work of art" emerges, together with the concept of the Artist, in the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy.
During the Renaissance, the word Art emerges as a collective term encompassing Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, a grouping given currency by the Italian artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century. Subsequently, this grouping was expanded to include Music and Poetry which became known in the 18th century as the 'Fine Arts'. These five Arts have formed an irreducible nucleus from which have been generally excluded the 'decorative arts' and 'crafts', such as as pottery, weaving, metalworking, and furniture making, all of which have utility as an end.
But how did Art become distinguished from the decorative arts and crafts? How and why is an artist different from a craftsperson?
In the Ancient World and middle Ages the word we would translate as 'art' today was applied to any activity governed by rules. Painting and sculpture were included among a number of human activities, such as shoemaking and weaving, which today we would call crafts.
During the Renaissance, there emerged a more exalted perception of art, and a concomitant rise in the social status of the artist. The painter and the sculptor were now seen to be subject to inspiration and their activities equated with those of the poet and the musician.
In the latter half of the 16th century the first academies of art were founded, first in Italy, then in France, and later elsewhere. Academies took on the task of educating the artist through a course of instruction that included such subjects as geometry and anatomy. Out of the academies emerged the term "Fine Arts" which held to a very narrow definition of what constituted art.
The institutionalizing of art in the academies eventually provoked a reaction to its strictures and definitions in the 19th century at which time new claims were made about the nature of painting and sculpture. By the middle of the century, "modernist" approaches were introduced which adopted new subject matter and new painterly values. In large measure, the modern artists rejected, or contradicted, the standards and principles of the academies and the Renaissance tradition. By the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, artists began to formulate the notion of truth to one's materials, recognizing that paint is pigment and the canvas a two-dimensional surface. At this time the call also went up for "Art for Art's Sake."
In the early 20th century all traditional notions of the identity of the artist and of art were thrown into disarray by Marcel Duchamp and his DADA associates. In ironic mockery of the Renaissance tradition which had placed the artist in an exalted authoritative position, Duchamp, as an artist, declared that anything the artist produces is art. For the duration of the 20th century, this position has complicated and undermined how art is perceived but at the same time it has fostered a broader, more inclusive assessment of art.
