  • Afghan woman who ran secret schools under Taliban wins education prize

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - An Afghan woman who supported underground schools at a time when the Taliban banned education for girls, was awarded the fifth annual WISE prize on Wednesday for taking education to marginalised communities.
Sakeena Yacoobi founded the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) in 1995, providing schooling and healthcare in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan as well as setting up the secret home schools, which closed down when Taliban rule ended in 2001.
Since then the charity has expanded its work, helping 12 million people, many of them girls, in rural and marginalised parts of Afghanistan, according to the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).
"It is particularly meaningful because this is such a crucial time in Afghanistan," said Yacoobi, accepting the prize in Doha, Qatar. "I dedicate the prize to the AIL and all of the women, men and children we are educating."
The Taliban have launched sustained attacks since the withdrawal of most foreign troops late last year, straining the limited resources of Afghan forces. Many districts across the country are now fully or partly under Taliban control.
The $500,000 education prize awarded by WISE, set up by the Qatar Foundation, recognises individuals or teams who successfully address global educational challenges that can bring real change to communities. U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama also spoke at the conference.
"With this prize, we know that we can continue to educate more and more Afghans, giving them hope and encouraging them to go forward no matter what they are facing," said Yacoobi.
She has also opened private schools under her own name, set up a radio station, and plans to establish a university for women as well as a television network.
Last year the prize was won by Ann Cotton, a British entrepreneur who set up Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education, which has helped educate more than one million girls in Africa.
Other past winners include Vicky Colbert, a Colombian, Madhav Chavan, an Indian, and Fazle Hasan Abed, from Bangladesh.

with anything that requires being granted a budget, there will be fake claims of activities taking place when in reality they are not. furthermore, usa didn't fund any schools in afghanistan prior to 2001 and neither is this woman claiming to have run these schools on US funds in the first place. she has nothing to do with US funds so based on the article you have posted, which claim of hers is "fake"??

well, if she hadn't continued educating girls when the schools were shut, chances of those schools remaining shut since then and no one having access to education would have been higher. charity is not necessarily money, charity is also various forms or acts or kindness. how come first you claimed one thing and now you are changing the subject to something entirely different??

the claim is the same since that is the only part in the whole article of yours about education in afghanistan and my source refutes that part. all of this fake progress and awards given to these people is just for propaganda. None of these people care about afghan children since they are proponents of people that empower pedophiles who abuse afghan children and turning afghanistan into a narco state which has turned afghan children into a bunch of drug addicts.

you just need an excuse to start ranting about the same old **** you have been ranting about for the last three years..regardless of what the subject is. she doesn't care about afghan children and obviously she is faking all that she claims to be doing but taliban bombing schools or shutting them down all together to take the kids, training them to become suicide bombers and blow their own family members, that's just for the betterment of islam and muslims across the globe...the greatest gift humanity could have.

God knows if you have even bothered to step foot in to that country in the last 20 years. instead of wasting my energy on you, i am going to chug down my coffee and get on with my own education.

and how the US military says afghan children are fair game:
In October, the US launched an airstrike in Afghanistan that killed three children - ages 8, 10, and 12 -while they were gathering firewood (or by some accounts, dung to burn as fuel). NATO issued its usual dismissive statement, admitting it may have “accidentally killed three innocent Afghan civi

no, the ones where malala yousefzai was shot in the head. or the one that killed all those kids in peshawar. heck about 100s of them in afghanistan before 2001 and right until 2005.
my own school was turned in to a ****ing lice camp when i was in third grade.
it's alright. you can sit your ass in america and bull**** all you want. we sold out afghans will get there and try to fix the country and if you have some sort of an objection that you can't satisfy yourselves by whining over the net over, feel free to come down there, hide behind a rock and shoot at us. it's already happening..it's just that instead of using their own children, your fathers have brought you over to the west where you live comfortably but condemn those afghans who want basic education or the right not to be bombed on their way to school.

let's face it. beghairats like you and your fathers will never have the courage to face us face to face. they will fight their wars by sending over soldout panjabi/arab fighters or innocent brainwashed afghan kids gathered from the streets to kill us instead. so why even bother arguing with you??
you just sit here and tell yourselves whatever lies make you feel good about yourselves.

are you sure the lice didnt come when masood was running kabul since he was doing nothing for the civilians while they were being raped and looted mostly by the people that are in power today and himself:

please..it's your retarded assumption that if a person opposes the brutalities of taliban, they have to be supporting the warlords of the jahadi era or the thieves of the current government. that's what you get out of forming an identity or ideology based on the tales your forefathers tell you rather than seeing things with your own eyes and deciding for yourself.
