  • What is Best Undergraduate Degree?

Best in any terms, economics for example.....

  • #2
The best undergraduate degree is that which makes you happy.

So, chose a field you like and want to take part in, then pursue that education.

That being said, do not use education for income purposes. Income can be a by-product of education, not the principal reason. Meaning, that as a result of an undergraduate degree you have the potential of making an income out of it. But, making an income out of your education is not a right.

The real reason for education is enlightenment. To understand yourself, society, the world around you. It is for awakening.

Engineering, Nursing... That is about it in terms of employment after undergrad.

The rest is going to school for school because you like words words words.

I am an advocate of the liberal arts (music, religion, philosophy).

You can always study a different degree for your undergrad, and then something different for your masters.

For example if you study Fine Arts, and get really good grades, when you finish your BFA, you could do a Masters in Education or an MBA after some work experience.

You could even go to Law School after a BFA or BSc.

Liberal arts are for those who are born to rich fathers or those who have no problem starving their children. As an artist, the surest way to fail and hate your life is by going on about doing what you love as a profession.

As Maugham says "I have nothing but contempt for the people who despise money. They are hypocrites or fools. Money is like a sixth sense without which you cannot make a complete use of the other five. Without an adequate income half the possibilities of life are shut off. The only thing to be careful about is that you do not pay more than a shilling for the shilling you earn. You will hear people say that poverty is the best spur to the artist. They have never felt the iron of it in their flesh. They do not know how mean it makes you. It exposes you to endless humiliation, it cuts your wings, it eats into your soul like a cancer."

Follow your heart but take your brain with you.

"To burn always with this hard gemlike flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life."

                  Salam DaZharo Jan,

Please see my comment in thread "What does it mean to be human" (pasted below):

Bebaksheed, valee maksad yan daleel e man ham ast kay man koshish konam be goftan e Farsi konam. Keylee bebaksheed agar matlab az javab e man baraye een sawal shouma na khahee garift.

Az een sawal man faqat yek javab bedaham. Agar man dar een duniya faqat yak mard hastam va agar man gareeb hastam, man dar een duniya haque na khaham dasht. Dar een duniya faqat dolat migoyad. Man een cheez na goftam kay dar een duniya az insaniyat gheimat neest, valee agar yak shaqs beghair dolat hastad, ou che konad? Awaz e ou boland na shavad (no one will hear him).

Dorest ast kay besyar mard, va dokhtar dar een duniya khasi cheez beghair dolat kard, valee een hameeshe naboshad, zeera, beghair dolat yak shaqs awaz na dorad.

Is liye jitne bee duniya ke gareeb lok hai, un ki bat koi nai sunta.

                  ----

If you don't speak Farsi I can translate it for you. Essentially I have argued that if one does not have money, they essentially do not have a voice. While it is true that many people have been able to advocate and create change without great wealth, this hardly ever happens.

my name is da zahro jaam, not da zahro jan. communicate with me through proper Farsi, pashtu or English if you want me to reply. I don't appreciate people butchering languages.

People have plenty of voice and more so when they are not too occupied with their wealth. As they say, it may not be within one's ability to stop injustice but it's always within their means to protest it. If you are someone who values that sort of a voice, that is plenty of it right there.
Furthermore, wealth is not defined by the size of someone's wallet. Poor people don't remain poor if they put their lives to proper use and it makes one hell of difference when you don't lose perspective once your status changes.

                      Sorry Jan,

Yes I agree with you completely. Voice can be heard of many individuals in spite of being reared in difficult milieu.

In dire times, the paper boy can became a great hero. Generals are always standing far back in the battle field... the common man is the one who must often fight.

Working class men have been seen to rise very high in social affairs... It really depends on being able to draw on ones primary strengths.

Heros can then be found in the most inconspicuous, pious and meek of men.
