  • The Purpose of Life

The question of Purpose in Life is an ethical and philosophical question but is relevant and important to everyone of us as a human being. A purposeless life is like a free electron without a nucleus. It is important to think about our purpose of life. With increasing chaos , ambiguity, discomfort in the the world ,I think, we need to prioritise our preferences in life.

In my opinion the purpose of life is nothing except self realisation. The various faculties and potentialities in the humans have to be realised and actualised. With more discoveries about human brain, the bio-tech has exposed the reality of a lot of concepts which were developed by artists, poets, aestheticians and fictions writers. Similarly the reality of love , passion and various degrees and levels of instincts is getting clearer with the invention of nano-technology.

In brief the meaning of life is to unleash the potentialities in the bio-psychic mechanism of humans with the help of technology. Till physical and mathematical sciences become the sole litmus test for correctness of ideas, humanity is destined to suffer due to the variety of their subjective experiences about objectives realities.

The modern thinkers of human psychology for example the existentialists believe that Human have NO predetermined nature. However there are thinkers who believe in a fixed human nature and have put efforts to inquire about Human nature. It is another fact that Mcdougal, Adler, Frued, Jung ,Marx and Machiavellei [an even the some mulsim thinkers like Iqbal and Rafiuddin] do not agree to the existentialist perception. All of them do believe that humans have a fixed nature.

With the discovery of unconscious mind by Frued ,some thinkers have given explanations for the innate urge in the unconscious mind which drives the whole human behaviour. Among these thinkers there is a concensus on the existence of an urge but not on what that urge is. For example Adler says its the urge to dominate, Frued says it is the urge to sexual desires, Rafiuddin says it is the urge for beauty and perfection etc.

Let me give an example of a view on the Purpose of life after reflecting on human nature. J.P.Sartre's who is an Existentialist thinker says that Existence means human existence and it preceeds essence, character, nature and that "We create our own nature". This implies that:

    1) There is no fixed pre determined purpose of human life.Human themselves set this purpose.

    2) We have no predetermined nature or essence that controls what we are, what we do, or what is valuable for us.

    3) We are free to act independently of outside influences.

    4) We create our own human nature and values through these free choices.

When Sartre says that human life has no purpose it means that Human life has no "predetermined" purpose.

Once we understand that there should be a purpose then I am expecting that one has to justify that purpose.

Before the contributing and reflecting memebers go too far, I would like to limit the scope of my question to the the purpose of "human" life.

If anyone opines that Human life has no purpose like the pessimists of Schopenhaur type or existentialists like J.P.Sartre then the next logical question would be why would someone waste his/her time in struggling to achieve the ideal of freedom and prospertiy?

Damn ... what a philosophical piece of thought! Beautiful!

I'm gonna have to agree with your idea of it, that the purpose of life is solely self-realization. I also believe that we MAKE that purpose ourselves and it's not pre-determined. It may be, who knows, but that can't be proven.

But what I wanna understand is this: What happens if our purpose in life is not fulfilled? Or if we are too unfortunate to realize it and so never act on it?

Purpose of Life: Purpose of Life is nothing but to recognize your creator (Allah) by self-recognition.
God said (Hadis-e-qdsi): "I was hidden treasure, I thought I must be recognized, so I created the Universe by love"

Dear brother, what is the next step once you have reached self-realization?
Islam will prevail, a promise made by the Creator of this universe:

[61:8] They desire to extinguish the light of Allah with the breath of their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, even if the disbelievers hate it.

[61:9] He it is Who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the Religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religions, even if those who associate partners with God hate it.

I meant in general. Suppose a person has certain dreams to look forward to fulfilling, and only that's their purpose in life. What happens if they never achieve those dreams? (And assume they're not achieved due to outside forces or circumstances not in the person's control.)

But suppose that the purpose of life IS self-realization. Now, what if that's not fulfilled for ALL people (and I'm sure it's not), especially those who believe that's the purpose of life but never get to achieve it. Then what happens?

our very existence in this world proves that each one of us are here for a purpose....

what purpose?????? we have to realise orunderstand our purpose of existence....

some realise it soon.....they take life where they want, towards the achievement of their goals....

some realize it toooo late.... but still work towards it... as its never too late to begin...

and some dont realise it at all....and just flow with time and go whereever lifetakes them,,,,, are happy and content with they are, what they have.....

                  this is all useless philosophy.

The purpose of life is to worship allah. For non-Muslims it is like a dog chasing its tail. They keep asking themselves what the purpose of life is.

For us Muslims, there is not doubt. We are here to worship our creator.

you are implying that allah desires to be worshiped. This is false. Our worship is a means for us to go to paradise. We are told to do so, so we can earn our place in paradise. Its not like allah needs anything. It is us who are the needy.

You may worship Allah to please him however mind it if your worship does not involve benefitting humans or contributing to human society or to the advancement of science and knowledge or evolution of human thought then this worship of no use.
