Results are out, this just happens to prove the price tag of a school does not matter, it's about the QUALITY of your department. Take a look. You have a cheap out-of-state school kicking Ivy-league butt.

Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

What this means is the following, you don't have to pay a school like Princeton, Yale, etc 50K per year to receive a top notch CS education. You can attend competitive programs like Stony Brook, or other state schools(can't think of any other in NY)that are generally for free for need based students(or 2800 per semester) and still receive a top notch education, and these results show that their students are just as kick ass.

I wouldn't call Stony Brook a cheap out of state school, it is apart of the SUNY collegiate family. And Stony Brook has an amazing department in so many fields, they're reknowned for physics and differential geometry.

I didn't mean that in a pejorative way RTR. It was with respect to cost.

I confess that Stony Brook's Computer Science, Physics(I just saw it's the 4th best nuclear program in the USA, probably top 10 on earth), Applied Math(specifically in Geometry, there are top 5 in the USA)is better than most Ivy-leagues, such as Columbia, Yale, etc. I don't hesitate to give them their respect. These competitions, such as the ACM one, shows us how these 'affordable(not cheap, sorry for that)' schools can kick butt. I'm sure those NYU, Yale, and those other private schools must be feeling the burn to kick their butt kicked in the most prestigious programming competition on earth.

To make up for my poor use of words, I'll give them props by saying the president of Stanford University is a Stony Brook Computer Science Ph.D. I hope I did not offend you or anyone.

            My apologies.

I also confess that one can argue that SUNY(as a whole)is the best university on earth, since it's so huge with such outrageous reach. Not even MIT can hold a candle if compared to the ENTIRE SUNY system. The only competitor I see is the Californian UC system.

SUNY is great, but I think Stony Brook is their Jewel; at least I like Stony Brook. yes a few of my professors also went to Stony Brook I also consult people at Stony Brook on stuff.

I see no offense at all, I'm just saying Stony Brook is a very renowned school in so many fields, even has a Pashtun Biochemistry professor there.

I thought you went to Stony, and I offended you. Glad to know that's not the case.

Stony, from what I've heard, is a tough science school with a very high suicide rate due to stressful studies. Most Ivy-leagues suffer from glad inflation, while public schools suffer from glad deflation.

Ok ....what I mean is it is hard to get a fellowship there, even if you're an A student.

Yeah I'm in contact with the MAT Marie David (sp?) and Marcus Khouri; they're helping me with a a topic dealing with non-metriziable tensors on manifolds.
