Samima, Program-wise, I study 'cellular, molecular and biomedical studies'. But what I am actually studying is cancer genomics...recently I got interested in the neuro and develpmental aspects of malignant carcinomas...and just a week ago I thought of looking at some infectious agents for further exploration. What I actually study is evolution of humans...Phews!! I am becoming jack of all trades and master of none

I was telling someone else in another thread how RELIEVED, how HAPPY, how GRATEFUL I feel when I find that Pashtun women are into fields like this! Every single field of study has its importance, and biomedical studies is no exception.

The reason is not only because we're being more and more educated, becoming more aware of fields like this, but also because it is potentially helpful and beneficial to Pukhtuns back home. So, I'd only hope and pray that our education attained wherever come in handy for our folks in our native land so that we can help minimize the miseries of our people at last. However, if our education is obtained here, and we remain and settle here without ever considering our situation back home, then that'd be not appreciated.

So, Gulalai and everyone else, please bear in mind that our people need us; we did nothing special to deserve the blessings of the opportunities we have right now (including the opportunities of an excellent education and a comfortable lifestyle), but we should express our gratitude for them by giving back to our people when we can.

My ultimate field is Islamic Studies (Islamic law, gender relations, non-Muslims' rights, hermeneutics, and Islamic philosophy are my focuses), but this doesn't suffice. It's just abnormal of me to give ONE answer when I'm studying a ton of things, so a more detailed response is provided in the thread "What is your major?"

Marine biology is just way, WAY too cool!

And computer games designs are so fascinating! I really wonder how that stuff works. Mind sharing some information with us? ... Please?

I've two friends in the animation world, and it's so much fun watching their creations in action!

Dera Manana Qrratugai. Your words mean a lot to me and other Pashtun females across the globe who are on a voyage of self-discovery. You are absolutely right in saying that we should return WHAT WE CAN...All the hard work should be for our qaam and watan (this is the lesson my father has taught me when I took the first step). One of the reasons I decided to get into hot water (studying abroad) is to learn cutting-edge research. I have already developed (the process almost killed me!!) a collaboration in transferring a technology from here (USA) to Pekhawar which will help in the diagnosis of certain infectious diseases. Oftentimes, doctors over there get away with such infections by not being able to diagnose the hidden infectious agents. So with this technology (which is a latest sensitive diagnostic assay worth millions $$$) such samples of infected patients would not also help in the detection of new viruses but will also be helpful in preventing local epidemics.Whether someone would actually use could not be determined because most of the times such pricy equipments remain in boxes or become show-piece (the forget how much one has to beg for such donation)..(a little birdy told me that it is still in the box-waeee noooo)...still the optimist in me would motivate me always,lol..
The reason for narrating this story was not to glorify my little effort (I believe we have the potential to do much more, more and more.......but alas!this life is soooo short) but was to highlight an important point you made that we need to return back in whatever form we can and that too in present (I am impatient..better early than late, lol).
Here I would take this opportunity to just request all the Pashtuns males that it's high time we educate our females and develop our nation. This one particular member often accuses us of being happy and contented with our history and that we are nothing in present and that our future is dark. Let's make this effort of educating our >50 oppressed population to make both our present and future promising and glorious..might as well shut the mouth of those who makes fun of our history!

Can you explain the process on how you sent the machinery to backhome? You paid millions of dollars?

I am so proud of you and all my ladies here. It makes me glad. I feel like I am in an educated environment everytime I come here.

Firstly, a very good suggestion to all Pukhtuns regarding the education of all our females and thereby helping develop our nation.

Secondly, we NEED to discuss things like what you described above because I had no idea that was possible. I mean, I can imagine such a procedure is possible with the highly advanced technological world we're living in today, but I would never have thought of such a specific process and method of how it could happen!

So we need to explain and understand these methods for many different reasons, including 1) We might be encouraging 2) others to venture on similar paths. 2) We might be showing others that, "I am doing something that's very important AND I love it (hence driving them to enter a field for these two major reasons). 3) We could be saying to them, "This stuff was initially not easy for me to grasp, but after long years of studying it, I got a grip on it, enough for me to explain it to others." (This way, those who are on the brink of quitting something just because it seems difficult to them will re-consider because they'll see that quitting should not be an option.)

Reason (1) above is important because not all students who enter college know exactly what they're gonna major in or what they'll become. Many (like me) go through several classification/major changes before they settle on something they find worthwhile both for the betterment of a people/society/etc. and meets their personality/interest.

Explaining such complicated processes AND mentioning our personal (individual or collective) contributions to making it successful should never be understood by others as our way of being arrogant or "glorifying their own efforts" (not little by any means, by the way!) but instead should be seen as a way for us to influence others, to encourage those who are not sure what they want to do but need some ideas of what they might be interested in and what would be productive for our people.

So, we shouldn't shy from sharing our accomplishments from time to time. The tone we use and the way we say it in will tell whether we're being excessively proud of our own selves or are encouraging others, serving as icons of hope for them, helping guide them to a field that they would appreciate and study themselves.

Amna, I feel the same. The females here are amazing and brave, intellectual and witty..I am proud of them too

And NO,NO,NOOOOOOO....I am not that rich (I am a poor researcher).I can't think of so much $$$ in my wildest dreams at present. The process was really cubersome and I would not want to claim an iota of credit in it. All I did was to identify the need of such technology in our areas (which comes easy if you want to do research in biomedical sciences) and to present a proposal (the hardest part). Of course, people here are not that generous (and stupid) that somebody will tell them and they would give it away.Who gives a damn to people of third-world countries still having Malaria and Polio? After all, the money/donations of any form that they give us is the hard-earned tax money of their citizens.
About the process: As I mentioned, the first thing was to make a proposal and it was rejected 17 times in the last two years for many reasons (that I can't write here for many other reasons). There were also issues of funding and that no single agency was willing to donate the entire money. After we had enough funds (I practiced begging many times, lol), our research center transfered the equipment there holding me responsible for almost every good or bad (mostly) associated with it.
The day we shipped it was one of the most memorable days of my life but since then my worst days have started also as my director here is asking for progress and I am still thinking what to tell her (reminder: the box, lol) ...she might as well ship me back too very soon,LOL
p.s. My position/situation does not allow me to provide all details. I hope you understand.

The proposal was rejecting 17 freaking times and you still stuck to it?!?! You have the perseverance I long for, girl! It also shows how willing and desperate you are to help a people most in need of your skills.

Great, just too great to believe it! This is one of those times when I say, "Tf, tf, tf, da nazara na she!" You're a Gulalai indeed!

I have a college degree and presently I'm at the grad school. But I don't want to talk about my masters and other boring stuff. What I want to talk about are the things that I want to learn:

                            1. Cooking and Baking -- I can cook, but I do really feel that I need to improve my culinary skills. I would like to cook great food for my future husband someday.

                            2. Massage-- My future husband will need a relaxing massage after work. Lol!

                            3. Painting-- I love Arts. There is an artist hiding inside of me.

                            4. Compose songs-- Music makes me happy.

                            Hmm... what else? :-)
