  • Computer Engineering

    Assuming you haven't been living in a cave or under a rock for the last few decades, you are probably aware that an amazing computer revolution has rapidly changed the way much of the world works. Developments in radio, television, radar, transistors, computers, and robotics have fundamentally altered human life. The field of Computer Engineering is at the epicenter of this development. It encompasses a wide range of topics including operating systems, computer architecture, computer networks, robotics, artificial intelligence, and computer-aided design.

    If you major in Computer Engineering, you'll learn all about the hardware and software aspects of computer science. You'll gain a solid understanding of circuit theory and electronic circuits, too. Also, because Computer Engineering is closely linked with Electrical Engineering, the fields are found in the same department at many universities. Consequently, many undergraduate programs incorporate most of the core curricula in both electrical engineering and computer science so graduates will be prepared to work in either field.

    Computer Engineering is a difficult major but it's a major that's in demand. Software engineering companies, telecommunications firms, designers of digital hardware, and many other business enterprises hire Computer Engineering majors right out of college and pay them well. Computer Engineering also makes great preparation for medical school, business school, and law school (particularly if you want to specialize in patent law).

    A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

    For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

    The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

    I would like to encourage most of our members to give CpE a try and see if it suits them. Computer Engineers are extremely well positioned since not only do they have the necessary EE expertise, but they are also fluent on the software side. CpE's can easily delve in to the EE field, or the CS field so the flexibility of the degree is tremendous. Most CpE programs are jointly offered through the EE and CS departments, although I have noticed a recent trend where the EE department host's the CpE degree. A CpE can easily select the CS electives, or EE electives that suits him/her, and gain extra knowledge. I would also like to encourage potential CpE's to take a database course. Taking courses pertaining to telecommunications, along with mobile web & app development is also a fantastic idea. Be wise, and tailor your degree however you want. Engineering degrees are usually not flexible, but that should not prevent you from taking a CS/EE course that might wiggle your tail.

    In conclusion, a degree in CpE is extremely fruitful, despite appearing difficult due to nature of the rigorous course-work it requires.

    That's all for tonight.

      Im doing EE and half of the courses we do in EE are CS courses

      if nothing else, for those doing or thinking of doing electrical engineering make sure you guys build a programming base as early as your grade 12 level...Java/C AND Matlab for sure

        CpE is a sub-speciality of EE. I would urge you to take many CS courses, that way you can be a well-round individual upon graduation. Not only will you be able to carry a conversation with a EE, but you would also know about CS.

        Most EE curriculums do not focus on CS. They mainly require you to take some low-level language, or C. You should take as many CS electives you possibly can. Tailor your degree yourself, Talal Khan. Those CS skills, bundled with an engineering degree really impresses employers. I urge you to take a CS algorithms class while you are at it.

          it definitely seems like a good choice, and i am taking a computations elective but other than that with management as a minor im already a year late for graduation as it is i dont wanna prolong my suffering :P

          but you are right anyone would be foolish to not keep CS courses as electives

            Once you graduate, it's hard to return. So don't be too worried about your 'expected graduation date'. Keep in mind, you learn important skills in those CS courses, which would look great on your resume. Don't be lazy, and snatch those skills while you are young. That way, if EE has a rough phase, you can easily slide yourself into a CS job despite not possessing a CpE or CS degree simply because you already have most of those skils, except the more theoretial ones which likely won't be required for main stream jobs.

              Computer Engineering != 50percent CS + 50percent EE. If you are interested in Software, you may still major in CpE. If you however, have absolutely no interest in hardware, CS might be the better route. As of right now, in my opinion, Computer Science is the best major in the USA. It has the most job opportunities, and is arguably the most versatile. Choosing between CS and CpE could be a very difficult decision, let's try our best to make it easier.
              Let:
              {CmpE} - courses typically taken by computer engineering majors
              {CS} - courses typically taken by CS majors

              Then take a close look at:
              A = {CS} - ({CmpE} ∩ {CS})
              B = {CmpE} - ({CmpE} ∩ {CS})

              If a PF'er likes A more than B then he/she should major in CS, else do CmpE;

              Not all Computer Science and CpE programs are the same. Employers prefer graduates from ABET accredited programs. Please make sure your program is ABET accredited. Accreditation matters.

                I had an extreme taste for the field of computer but I did not know which line to choose ?
                Even now, I want to do some computer course online. Which course should I take as I don't know any about the basics. May be I am interested in programming.

                  Buy a cheap book from Amazon, that will teach you how to code in Java and C++. Remember, CS is not java 'programming'. Programming is just one aspect of CS.
