  • School Curriculum and literature in Afghanistan

School teachers are almost illiterate. It is not because the teachers are incompetent. But because they never had the chance to fully develop.

School books and publishing of school books is contracted out to for-profit organizations.

The quality of those books are controlled by Ministry of Education in Afghanistan. Most of it's staff are ex-communists. And you can bribe the inspection unit so they approve cheap low quality books written by amateurs.

Since the corruption in the government has a top-down nature, the chances are very low to see any improvement in the near future.

The school curriculum will stay as poor as it is. And inspection and quality improvement will stay absent.

So I don't know why kids who have lived all their life in the west and have never read any recent school book or don't know any teacher in the current education facilities in Afghanistan are so happy to see "schools" being built by India & America.

You are all choosing to fool yourself and you convince yourself of things that are not real.

Most young boys and girls who graduate from schools in Afghanistan are very incompetent. Their abilities in literacy and maths is usually self-taught. Otherwise it is due to extra curricular private teaching and courses.

We need to stop relying on KUFFAR for helping us.

We must help the improve education in Afghanistan ourselves. We need people to make serious sacrifice and go there and make it possible to have quality books, quality schools and quality teachers!

Afghanistan lost all its Gems to Europe and N.A.

Now imagine Zalmay khalilzad working for Afghanistan interests.

We don't need cowards, and b*******s who run away when things become difficult.

The older generation who have fled Afghanistan leaving the people to suffer and endure the worst are useless.

We don't need those who do not have the guts to dare and risk death helping our country.

MOst of the so-called educated are in fact a bunch of cowards. All they can do is criticize other from the side-line. And when they finally do decide to gather all their courage to go back, they end up serving in Karzai regime doing exactly the things that are only helping our downfall further. By accepting bribes and bending over to foreigners and invaders.

Let them die stuffing themselves with hand-outs from foreigners.

Afghanistan shall rise again using it's own muscles.

Only weak people get influenced by those kind of things. If they are so weak that they let themselves be influenced, then they are useless.

If we have strong conviction, and courage to risk everything for the right cause, Allah will help us. We don't need to rely on others. We rely on our own efforts and leave the rest to Allah. Allah grants victory to who-ever tries the hardest to achieve the best.

If our intention is good and we have ikhlas, Allah will help us. But if we invest our hopes and expectations on foreign invaders, kuffar, mushrikeen, hindus and corrupt puppets and circus clowns, we will stay in the same mess as we are right now.

Are you against Aid from foreign countries? Should we start begging countries like Pakistan does?
Pakistan is a kaafir government. Just because there are Muslims in Pakistan it does not mean Pakistan is any better than any other country.

We have to do it ourselves. Without hand-outs. We don't need to beg others for help.

Who did prosper thanks to foreign aid. Look at Africa. The west is investing millions in aid in Africa for the past 60 years. Where in Africa did any of those countries make any positive progress thanks to the aid? NO WHERE.

So why should foreign aid work for us?

The Bacha Khan Educational Foundation claims to have established 300 schools in Pakhtunkhwa and FATA and to have a comprehensive programme of teacher development.

Baacha Khan Trust Educational Foundation is an auxiliary of the Baacha Khan Trust, a registered non-profit in Pakistan and Afghanistan that promotes peace, democracy, hunam rights, and development

Worth looking at, perhaps - gives an outline look at the kind of curriculum on offer. They have highlighted Urdu (and Arabic) as languages somewhere. I understand the positions of both, but considering the disadvantaged position that Pashto has in Pakistan, I can't see how "right" it is to give other languages immediate equal status in a school system that should be geared towards Pashtoon betterment.

When was the last time you visited Paktia? I am cofident to say that the article about those schools in Paktia is LIE! I have many friends in Paktia. I don't believe a word of these media stunts about schools and rebuilding projects.

If BKE foundation really does rely entirely on our own people and are independent of any foreign aid and foreign political influence than this is exactly the kind of initiative we need.

I do understand why you think their emphasis on Urdu and Arabic is less important than Pashto literacy. But I think that educated people should be able to communicate in different languages and study books in different languages. It improves their ability to learn more.

                Sangar,

The BKEF sounds like a positive step, right?

Literacy amongst Pashtoons generally needs a lift, and I think if you're going to do it, then do with Pashto because (1) it helps strengthen the language and (2) it's easier because Pashtoons are learning in their own language.

Urdu/Arabic/Farsi/English etc. all have their place, but for me, it is always, Pashto first if we are going to try to solve the educational deficit.

You can't believe how with a real passion, I really want the educational betterment of Pashtoons using the types of teaching pedagogies that keep our children interested in their learning and that equip them with the thinking and practical skills that make them competitive and independant.

I watch closely what is happening in the Pashtoon belt in terms of education, and I want to make my pitch at some point - not because I think that I am the best teacher - I'm not - it's just that I've spent all my career teaching in foreign systems and fixing up their educational gaps, that I owe it to the people that I come from to *try* and make a difference.

After all, isn't that what brings people into teaching in the first place.

Pray for me, that I am able to make this a reality, InshAllah.

The best solution is to produce educative material in Pashto.

May allah help all of us in our effort for doing the right things to please Allah and full fill our duties.

I wish I could teach Afghan kids. I am wanting to rip my hair out reading the garbage my students are handing in. They don't appreciate the fact that their education is free.
                    *faints from frustration* hehe
Anyone want to send me to AFghanistan to teach? As long as the taliban doesn't kill me!

I would totally go to Afghanistan if it meant I could help! I would love to educate children that deserve it. Are you going to ship me off? Do I get to wear a burka?

Curriculum is really a very important issue and sangar has a very valid point here to develop our own curriculum ourselves not by others. Its a very very important and delicate point. For curriculm designing and developenmt you dont need millions of dollars. Its an intelelctual exercise and Afghans or Pashtuns dont lack in intellect.

Syllabus or curriculum is the blood of any education system. The buildings of schools, the salaries of teachers, the teaching material, furniture, management cost etc will require aid or loans from foreign donors but the curriculum must and must be designed by Afghans themselves. You cant give this sensitive task to others. Others may have their vested interests and curriculum will enable them to make millions of Pashtuns their mental slaves. At least you design the map of your house if you cant construct the house.

What we need is for people who complain about the situation (poverty, illiteracy, not good opportunities for a good education, etc.) in Afghanistan and Pukhtunkhwa to actually DO something instead of running off to the west to settle and live in peace and harmony with the people they claim to hate so much.

What has any of us done for our people? (I'm not expecting answers. Please don't answer this question.) We need to ponder over this and start planning some strategies to help our people instead of just complaining about how horrible things are there. Maybe the people some of us call kuffar woudln't be helping us if we stopped them; we can stop them indirectly by doing something ourselves.

I'm sure a lot of us are actively involved in re-building our nation. I don't doubt it. I'm also sure that they don't get any credit or publicity while non-Afghans get a lot of publicity for doing something in Afghanistan/Pukhtunkhwa. So, let's be MORE active; let's reclaim our land by being useful to it -- and we can be useful even if we're not living in it directly. (Some of us might be away out of compulsion, others out of choice.)
