  • The Medical School Path

    Salam to all,

I am new to the forum and have found the people here very interesting and inspiring.

I have noticed that there are many people here who are doctors, so I wanted to ask their opinions on what they believe is the best way to get into Medical School and which Medical School?

A Little Background: I just finished my first year of Undergraduate study (Mainly 100-200 level courses) with a 3.8 GPA (Sadly my first semester went bad but second was perfect). I go to Univ. of Tenn. I am not very interested in BCMB because it goes too much in depth into boring stuff, I prefer chemistry. But where I excel the best at is the humanities, I want to major in Global Studies as it is an interdisciplinary major. So, I have come to the conclusion that it would benefit my chances of getting into Med. School best if I major in Global Studies and minor in BCMB. The advisors at these university's are useless and just working for money so I don't much care for what they say. So, I would like to know from people in the forum that are in medical school or have been through it, what they think is the best path? What are things that are important? Give some direction...

    And I appreciate the help

Though i am in Pre-med, I have researched a lot about the medical path. Both my parents are doctors so they give plenty of good advice.

I am a Biology major, with an emphasis on Physiology and a minor in Psychology. I thought it would be best to major in the science field, and keep all my options open to say if med school doesnt work out for me, but still stay in the field.

We have a doctor here, BarakzaiAbdali, you can ask him plenty for help.

You do seem to have a good GPA, keep it up. If you can, start slowly studying for MCAT's.

you are always in pre-med, when will you move ahead.
There was a guy in our town who attempted CSS exam three times but failed to pass it each time. Now that loser is expert on CSS and has opened CSS coaching academy. Lol

Pre-med is undergraduate. I have been in pre-med only for 2 years.

Have you graduated from medical college yet?

I've tried to previously address some questions here:

          http://www.pashtunforums.com/educati...-thread-10392/

I can help guide you. I am a physician.

Welcome. I dont think that humanities is at all a deficit, famous heart surgeon and former mentor of mine, Walter Merrill, a colleague of Senator Surgeon Bill Frist (not a fan of him though), was an English major:

          http://surgery.umc.edu/professionals.../wmerrill.html

Regarding your first semester... most medical schools are forgiving for that semester specifically...

Regarding school advisers... this depends. At major universities there is usually a committee and they put together what is called "the committee letter" that ranks you relative to other applicants from the same school. I also never relied on advisors and mainly utilized the guidance of young physicians... but at the same time I tried to find out more about my local committee.

Are you in UT Memphis or Knoxville? I was recently down in Memphis on a visit to their department... That, i believe, is where their medical school is... but if I recall correctly their overall university campus is in Knoxville.

Read through some of the posts... and see what you think. It may provide some guidance.

Dr. Saib dont be mean to the girls... we need more of them in the field. In the US, even an extra year or two is not a deficit... its seen as a benefit and a growth process.

Yup i agree. Female docters here with us are weak clinically for some unknown reason. American girls will be better.

Welcome and Salamoona Ahmad Walid Wrorre, let them fuse your questions, if they agree, into the medical thread itself as the issue of committee letters, seeking counseling, etc are all relevent questions in and of themselves.
