There was a time when government schooling was effective in KPK. But since one and half decade back, demand for public schooling has declined drastically and there has been a sharp-rise in private schooling. In public schools, there is an almost permanent lethargy prevailing and teachers behave as if they are on pension.
Even the semi-govt schools and old private schools have lost their lustre e.g. University Model School (UMS), University Public School (UPS), Lady Grifth, Convent, St Marry's etc. aqre no longer preferred school. University Model School and University Public Schools that once were the elite schools no longer attract the elite.
I have learnt that the professors of Peshawar and adjoining universities are no longer sending their children to UMS and UPS. Beaconhouses, Edwards, City, Roots, etc. (A-levels, O-levels) are more popular with them. This in a way is good that now the kids of the low-cadre university employees have got the chance to educate their children in relatively better schools (compared to govt schools) like UPS and UMS.
One wonders whether the public sector education can last one more decade. Or does the govt have any plan to revive it.
