  • Israel a threat to world peace

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), in an Apr. 25, 2008 BBC News website section titled "Nuclear Power in the Middle East," offered the following:

"Israel has never officially admitted having nuclear weapons, but is widely recognised to possess a significant arsenal. There are estimates it has between 75 and 200 nuclear warheads. The state is able to maintain its policy of ambiguity as it has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It is therefore not subject to inspections and the threat of anctions by the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency. This is a source of grievance for Iran and Arab countries which are signatories. Their attempts to get an IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency] resolution on Israel have been blocked by the United States and its allies. Israel's nuclear reactor at Dimona in the Negev desert was built secretly with help from France and was completed in 1964. It provides power and is understood to be the source of plutonium for Israeli nuclear weapons."

Tony Judt, PhD, Professor of History at New York University, in a July 19, 2004 editorial in The Nation titled "The Rootless Cosmopolitan," wrote:

"Despite Israel's own sophisticated efforts to publicize its case, the Jewish state today is widely regarded as a—the—leading threat to world peace. After thirty-seven years of military occupation, Israel has gained nothing in security. It has lost everything in domestic civility and international respectability, and it has forfeited the moral high ground forever."

Mordechai Vanunu, former technician at the Dimona nuclear plant in Israel, in an Aug. 18, 2004 Counterpunch interview with Amy Goodman titled "Israeli Nuclear Whistleblower Risks Arrest, Again - An Interview with Mordechai Vanunu," stated:

"I am very glad, happy and proud to reveal its [Israel] nuclear secrets to all the world and to let all the world to see the stupidity of Israel's nuclear weapons policy and the danger of a nuclear weapons policy in secret by Israel... They are betraying the Israeli citizens, and betraying the Arab community, and betraying all of humanity and the world, the human beings of all the world... Israel was involved or started producing the hydrogen bomb -- the most advanced and powerful atomic bomb that can kill millions of people. And that has no justification -- no need for Israel's existence...

Now Israel is much more aggressive, not to give anything to the Palestinians or to make real peace with Syria or Lebanon or Jordan or the Palestinians... [Israel] used to remind the world 'holocaust, holocaust' every hour, every day, but in fact Israel have a holocaust factory. This Jewish state was producing holocaust weapons and they have no right to speak about holocaust..."

Abdullah Ahmed Mohamed Al-Murad, Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations, in a Feb. 27, 2007 letter to the UN General Assembly Security Council titled "Identical Letters Dated 27 February 2007 from the Permanent Representative of Kuwait to the United Nations Addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council," wrote:

"I have the honour to send you this letter regarding the danger represented by Israeli nuclear capabilities, on behalf of the Arab States Members and Observers of the United Nations [which] express their deep concern and grave uneasiness over reference made in Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s interview with German television on 11 December 2006 to his country’s possession of nuclear weapons, considering it 'not to be the first country in the Middle East to produce nuclear weapons' and using the pretext that Israel does not pose a threat to neighbouring States as does Iran... The declarations by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel and other declarations reconfirm the fears of the States of the region and the entire international community about the danger threatening international security and peace."

Manouchehr Mottaki, MA, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in a Mar. 13, 2007 Conference on Disarmament hosted by the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs, in a document titled "Final Record of the 1058th Plenary Meeting," stated:

"It is undisputable that nuclear weapons in the hands of the Zionist regime with a long and dark record of crimes and atrocities such as occupation, aggression, militarism, State terrorism, crimes against humanity and apartheid, as well as violation of all United Nations Security Council resolutions, pose a uniquely grave threat to regional and international peace and security and require being seriously dealt with by the international community through practical measures."

James J. David, a retired US Army Brigadier General and Media Monitors columnist, in a Dec. 23, 2003 editorial posted on Media Monitors' website titled "Israel's Threat To World Peace," wrote:

"It is time to use our foreign aid as leverage and to insist on Israel to abandon its weapons of mass destruction and to abide by International Law. It is time we stop fooling the American people. It is time to get tough with Israel. After all, Israel is the biggest threat to world peace."

    -----------------

Julie Flint, a journalist based in Beirut and London, in a Jan. 3, 2004 Daily Star commentary titled "Remove Israel's WMD threat," wrote:

"Israel has not just the weapons, but also an aggressive strategy for their actual use. Its arsenal dwarfs the present or potential arsenals of all other Middle Eastern states combined and is out of all proportion to any conceivable deterrence requirement. It provides the major regional impetus for the development of WMDs and represents an acute threat to peace and stability in the Middle East."
