A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai
For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."
The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

not a field many women choose... electrical engineering (concentration in analog design, and minor in mathematics). currently working full time as prouct safety engineer and i really like my job.
Its one of the toughest field, with high competition in industry.... but the job has a position and respect that average fields lack.
i like the fact that i break alot of stereotypes about afghan women amongst average Americans. i get all sorts of reaction when they find out i am afghan and NOT born and raised in america
I am also happy to say I know 4 other Afghan female engineers who are close friends of mine. very talented girls and making our community proud

Pursuing furthur education in a field of interest doesn't have to be a career option jasmine. Some people just want to learn for the sake of gaining more knowledge on a subject that interests them.
Anyways, I don't have any degrees. I don't even have my high school diploma.
I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.
non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

what was other major? my bro did political science and he did find a very good job, but for a few years he worked in Afghanistan and now he is working in usa.Originally posted by PashtunQueenI was a double major, one of my majors was Political science. It was a short major but finding a job is difficult.
thts interesting and the best part is that you really like it.Originally posted by RoshinaMe ... Islamic Studies / Arabic, philosophy, gender studies, and Islamic law. (Okay, okay - it's ONE field (Islamic Studies) with a ton of sub-fields of my personal interests.) And I'm loving each one, and if I had to re-live my life 20 more times, I'd choose the exact same fields.
You job looks very good but something i will never go for it because i'm not into electric stuff tht much. Yes Afghans are very talented when they try.Originally posted by Feroza_Banu View Postnot a field many women choose... electrical engineering (concentration in analog design, and minor in mathematics). currently working full time as prouct safety engineer and i really like my job.

i want to go for computer science but i dont know if many girls choose this major.Originally posted by JasmineWhen deciding a career, one should carefully observe the demand of the major. For example a degree like Islamic studies hold little to no value when compared to accounting,Computer science and Finance. Choose what you like but do look at the job prospects!
Sometimes i want to take a class just to learn..like a computer class or a religion class.Originally posted by DaZahroJaam View PostPursuing furthur education in a field of interest doesn't have to be a career option jasmine. Inshallah next semester i have signed up for classes which are required for cs. just pray for me!Originally posted by RoshinaI admire ladies who go into fields that are traditionally considered "masculine" -- like engineering! You GO, Perozey!!
So, Sitaara guley, if you really like computer science and you believe it has a lot to offer you and you have a lot to offer the world with it, go for it -- regardless of whether many girls choose the field or not. Chances are, if there are a LOT of females in something, you decrease your opportunities to make big contributions to your perspective field.
I believe in choosing a field in which you have a lot to contribute. If you don't think you can contribute much to it and not take much out of it, don't do it. It's a waste of a mind.
i'm happy that it has too much math because i loveeeeeeeeee math. I believe i can do it.Originally posted by shlombayI think what Jasmine meant was Islamic studies and middle eastern has no demand. Which is true.
Sitaara go for CS. Be aware it's extremely difficult. Go for political science or Islamic studies if you just want a Ba degree. CS has too much math and physics which is considered difficult. It's also a long major which takes 5-6years to complete but upon completion you can have a great job. no need for grad school.

I agree, about a B.A. in the Social Sciences. I have one in Social Work, which is pretty much worthless (maybe I should study International Studies and Islamic and Geography), except that it opened doors, maybe to International Social work, which i what I consider myself, or at least it is one of my many hats. I am not high paid, though, because I am self-motivated, and not working for an organization really other than one of my own making. I have no security but love what I do, I take that back I do not have conventional "worldly" security, I know that if I am on the path Allah wants me on, then Allah will also meet my needs.
I am also a Baker, and trying to get that running more profitably, but again, working for myself! So if anyone out there is interested in a cake that tastes like Persian Baklava, wrapped in Scottish Shortbread, then contact me!
People keep telling me that I should write a book of my many adventures....who knows?
I am a "Jill of All Trades".......yes as my Daddy always said "Get involved in a occupation that you enjoy!" I as I said, love what I do!

Graduated with a major in Journalism, yes, but not quite the journalist people expect me to be yet. I want to go on a long break, so long, when I come back, the concept of new journalism will be old again.Originally posted by JasmineI am a Journalist, and I am extremely happy. *Mahzala* is also a journalist.

Sitaara, Computer Science is challenging but don't let people discourage you. Yes it's probably a long major but what you learn from it is priceless. :-) What's the highest level of Math you have taken? Computer Science is very math intensive, and since it's a difficult major, many people aren't capable of handling it. I am confident that you can handle it though.Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

Wow there's a lot being said here. Well I majored in the majors that are being hated on. =)
Comparative Literature and Sociology with an emphasis in law and society. I knew from the beginning it would be worthless, but I needed and wanted the analytical skills, reading skills and writing skills those majors offered me. I need them for law school Insha'Allah.
At the end of the day, choice something you'll be happy in. Something you'll find rewarding. As previously mentioned a Bachelor's degree is like a High School Diploma today. So yes, if you major in anything in the social sciences you'll get to go beyond. While staying in fields such as engineering, computer science or any science for that matter will and can get you a better job. However, remember that while you're majoring in those fields you GPA needs to be high. Yes, the classes are tougher than your average sociology or communications class, but the places that you want to get hired at want a good GPA. By a good GPA I mean at least a 3.0. That's what Yahoo, Google, Chevron, Apple,Shell and all those big corporations want. You'd think that getting a 3.0 or above in those fields would be a piece of cake. But NO. As mentioned computer science (since I'm using the tech companies) is a difficult field, and its demanding. I know this from a couple of my friends majoring in Computer Science. So if you can handle the math and physics part of computer science, by all means go for it. At the same time, take this with a grain of salt. You don't have to work for any of the corporations I just mentioned. You can work for something low key, where they want a 2.8 or above GPA.
And its a competitive field, but if you enjoy the competitiveness and can tackle the math then by all means GO FOR IT GIRL!! =) Represent, because frankly there are hardly any girls within those majors. Show those nerds what you're able to handle! You'll love it. =) Either way, pray and Insha'Allah you'll find something rewarding that you'll enjoy waking up to each and every single day. =)"Do not lose hope in adversity and complain that God singled you out for punishment, remitting others guilty of worse sins. Your present state could very well be His intent to elevate your spiritual station. Or He could just be testing your faith. Everyday that you persevere, you grow closer to perfection. Thus, your present despair may be the beginning of an infinite blessing". - Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani.
