  • Nangarhar: Hundreds infected with stomach diseases

JALALABAD (PAN): Hundreds of people in eastern Nangarhar province have been infected with stomach diseases due to unhygienic water following recent rains, an official said.

Public health director Dr. Ajmal Pardes told Pajhwok Afghan News the disease was spreading due to the consumption of unsafe water and lack of awareness among people.

The disease was mostly reported from Achin, Nazian, Door Baba, Spin Ghar, Ghanikhel, Kot and Bhati Kot districts. Most of the people in those areas used water from natural streams, he added.

Figures from the central hospital in Jalalabad and 110 other health centres in different districts showed only one person has so far died while some 800 people, including children and women, had been hospitalised, he informed.

He said the health department, in cooperation with different NGOs, including Health Net, UNICEF, PMS Japan and the Afghan Red Crescent Society, provided 1,500 water purification tablets to health centres. However, he added, some people were not allowing health officials to apply the tablets to water.

He demanded of religious scholars, teachers and elders to educate the people on the benefits of the water purification tablets. He also demanded the private practitioners not to recommend costly medicines for the patients.

Meanwhile, religious scholars at the mosque of Public Health Department asked people to keep themselves and their environment clean.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
