  • Smokers Have More Stress

Smokers often reach for a cigarette to calm their nerves, but new research suggests that smoking is actually a source of a stress, according to today’s “Really?” column.

The scientists’ hypothesis was that the continuing smokers were dealing with uncomfortable cravings between cigarettes multiple times a day, while the abstainers, after facing some initial withdrawal, had greater freedom from nicotine cravings and thus had eliminated a frequent and significant source of stress.

The benefits of quitting smoking — reduced risk of cancer and many other health problems — are known. But for millions of smokers, the calming effect of a cigarette can be reason enough to start up again.

Studies have found, however, that in reality, lighting up has the opposite effect, causing long-term stress levels to rise, not fall. For those dependent on smoking, the only stress it relieves is the withdrawal between cigarettes.

In a recent study conducted at the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, researchers looked at 469 people who tried to quit after being hospitalized for heart disease. At the start, the subjects had similar levels of stress and generally believed that smoking helped them to cope.

A year later, 41 percent had managed to stay abstinent. After controlling for several factors, the scientists found that the abstainers had “a significantly larger decrease in perceived stress,” roughly a 20 percent drop, compared with the continuing smokers, who showed little change.

Other studies have also found that smokers experience higher levels of stress and tension between cigarettes and lower levels over all when they quit.

    THE BOTTOM LINE

The calming effect of a cigarette is a myth, at least in the long term.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Bas nu khabara jhey par zay da.

Many people sadly know the consequences of cigarette smoking but its just too hard to quit. I have an uncle who swears he hates it but he smokes a pack a day.

Ugh smokers and smoking! The only time I stop breathing is when I have to pass by a smoker, and many times I feel like choking myself to death *suicidal*. I despise smoking and I want to tell all smokers that you people are just a bunch of morons (No, not YOU people but those other smokers, lol). You are aware that every single cigarette lessens your life by 7 min!!!You also know that there are 4000 different chemicals in a single puff of smoke and 60 of them are well-known carcinogens (chemicals that cause cancer) and you also know that these chemicals include tar (taar-kol in Pashto), Cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde (ALL THREE POWERFUL POISONS), carbon monoxide (GOSH!!this gas is like the POTENT toxic stuff and it is highly neurotoxic), etc.Okay, I don't care about your (as smoker) life, but I do care about my life and millions of other passive smokers. I was thinking of presenting here a LONG list of risks and diseases caused due to smoking, but I believe that a lot of smokers already are aware of the associated risks and hence it will fall on deaf ears certainly.
Okay! I am outta here...just the thought of smoking is giving me a headache..I need fresh air *breathe*
