Diarrhea kills 3, affects
dozens in Khost





KHOSTCITY(PAN): At least three people have died of and more than a
hundred others are suffering from a cholera-like communicable infection in
southeastern Khost province, officials and locals said on Sunday.

The affected areas include Musakhel, Gurbaz, Ismailkhel and several other
mountainous places, where the victims were women and children, residents
said.

Nek Salam, a resident of the Zadran village in Alisher district, said the
victims were suffering from a stomachache disease. One of his villagers has
already died, while another 20 are said to carry the infection.

Naqibullah, 25, who has admitted five relatives to the provincial civil
hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News that all of his family members were
suffering from diarrhea.

The victim feels stomachache and dehydration following fever; he
complained about a lack of health centers and urged the government to
prevent the further spread of the disease.

Hidayatullah Hamidi, acting public health director, confirmed 119 people in
inaccessible areas of Khost were suffering from a cholera-type disease,
and three people have fallen prey to it.

They have sent the victims' blood samples for diagnosis to Kabul, he
informed, linking the problem to continuous rains and floods in Khost.

The Public Health Department has initiated a public awareness drive
through media outlets to inform people to avoid eatables that help spread
the disease.

ASADABAD (PAN): Four children have died of suspected cholera and roughly 136
others have so far been infected in the Chapa Dara district of eastern Kunar province,
residents and a health official said on Sunday.


"The recent outbreak spread within 12 days in Bodgah, Watala, Qala, Gul Salak areas
of the district," a Bodgah resident, Nasrullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.


He said residents suffered from vomiting and diarrhea, which are symptoms of the
cholera that had so far claimed the lives of four children.


"There is only one clinic which lacks medicine, while the number of infected people are
high," he said. A team of doctors that arrived in the district four days ago distributed
some medicines among the people, Nasrullah said.


"Due to days of consecutive rains and floods, a disease similar to the cholera epidemic
has broken out among residents," Public Health Director, Asadullah Fazli, told Pajhwok
Afghan News.


“We have sent two teams of doctors to Chapa Dara district to control the disease,
with doctors at the district clinic working extra. We have also dispatched a large sum
of medicine to them,” he said.


The distribution of chlorine was underway in other areas to prevent any possible
infection of the disease, the health official said.

Doctor teams have so far examined 560 people infected with the diseases in the
district, where 136 cases of diarrhea surfaced. Fazli said two people had died of the
disease. “We advise all people not to use water from rivers and springs. We suggest
the use of boiled water and mineral water," Fazli added.

Sounds like a Cholera outbreak! This is what happens when you don't isolate and waste properly and their is flooding. The humanitarian situation in large parts of the country is of serious concern and the lack of basic infrastructure is unacceptable.

QALAT (PAN): Four people have died of diarrhea, while dozens others have been
infected with the disease in the Mizan district of southern Zabul province, an official
said on Saturday.

The epidemic, which spread fast during Eid days due to much eating and dirty fruits,
claimed the lives of four people in two villages, Deputy Governor Mohammad Jan
Rasulyar told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said another 70 people had fallen sick of the disease. A team of doctors had been
airlifted by a helicopter of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to the area
to control the situation, he added.

The dead included two children. Their deaths turned Eid happiness to sadness in
Anwar and Mullah Ali villages, a resident of the district, Habibullah, said.

He asked the government to make urgent efforts at bringing the situation under
control in order to prevent further fatalities.

Three months ago, 14 people died of cholera in Atghar district.

Diarrhea has hit alot areas mostly due to unclean water ,mosquitos , fruits not being cleaned properly, flys ect ,alot of children have been very ill and have lost their lives.
