Even if he does come out of this coma he will have serious issues. Probably paralyzed. Sorry about your distant relative. It's understanding that his family don't want to take him off of life support.
When we first came to Canada there was a Pakistani family that knew us well from back home. Thier 19 year old son drowned and was pronounced dead but the mother refused to accept it so they put him in life support for 5 years. He never woke up so after years of misery they finally let him go and focus on the rest of their children. Pretty sad choice to make.
5 years is a long time to be on life support. It is very hard to make a decision when you are in that situation and my Allah never put us in this kind of situation.

You're best off asking an imam or sheikh as I don't think anyone here is a scholar or has the permission to give such advice. Also if they can manage, advise your family to pray istikhara as Allah will help your family decide what they should do. But asking an imam or sheikh is the best thing. May Allah bless your relative and give patience to you and your family and help to ease your troubles. Ameen. I will remember your relative in my duas insha'allah.

They unplug the life support today and he passed away in about 15 seconds, it was so hard for his mom and wife.

It is a very difficult situation for anyone to be in . My question is if they remove life support, will his heart beat? what is he consider to be now alive or dead if his brain is dead? is it right islamically to put someone on life support for long?
Very sorry for this. May Allah(swt) give you and your family sabr through this. For those that think religion is not involved in these sort of situations, they are very wrong. I recently took a bioethics philosophy course and when we came to this situation where a person is brain-dead on life support most of us agreed that it would be okay to remove the life support and let nature take its course. Before embarking on what would be the right thing to do, religious perspectives were considered because in these situations most people look to their religions to help them. I always look to Islam to help me find direction and meaning when it comes to difficult situations like above. Your situation definitely put more importance on my studies and I hope everything goes well.
