The Sinhalese are an offshoot of Bengalis and are said to be descended by some from Prince Vijaya who according to some opinions came from Bengal.
This seems to be confirmed by genetics.
The Sinhalese language and Bengali are related too i.e. the Sinhalese are Indo-Aryan language speakers in overwhelmingly Dravidian south Asia, reinforcing the fact that they came from further up north.
