A 16-year-old boy in Afghanistan was repeatedly raped by Taliban fighters before being forced to undertake a suicide bombing mission, the country’s National Directorate of Security says.
The teenager, identified only as Bilal, was intercepted before he could carry out an attack on police headquarters in the Bagrami District of Kabul.
The NDS, the country’s domestic intelligence agency, released a video Sunday in which the would-be bomber told his story of repeated rapes by Taliban commanders. The alleged assaults happened in Nangarhar province, near the border with Pakistan.
In his video confession, Bilal said he was only sent on his suicide bombing mission after local residents found out about the sexual abuse. The night before the planned suicide attack, Bilal says a commander named Abozar taped his mouth shut and raped him, although he says he was abused by at least three other fighters before then.
In a statement, the NDS claims sexual abuse of boys is common in the ranks of Taliban fighters and the Haqqani network, an affiliated guerrilla group. Whether that is true is hard to confirm, complicated by the fact that it was the Taliban that cracked down on the disturbing practice of bacha bazi and handed out death sentences for sodomy during their rule from 1994 to 2001.
Bacha bazi, translated as “playing with boys,” involves the prostitution and sexual slavery of young boys among wealthy and powerful men for whom it is a status symbol to have young “dancing boys” who entertain them at social gatherings and provide sexual release in a strictly gender-segregated society. The practice has made a resurgence under the democratic government installed after the 2001 NATO invasion. While still illegal, the law against pederasty is now rarely enforced.
The NDS condemned the use of children as instruments of war and human rights groups have repeatedly called on the Taliban to stop using them as suicide bombers.
The war between the central government and Taliban insurgents has now been raging for well over a decade, made even more perilous since NATO troops left the country in 2014. On April 18, things got even more complicated when the Islamic State, also known as ISIL or ISIS, claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb on a bank in eastern Afghanistan that killed 35 and injured many more. It was the first apparent foray by the Islamist militant group into Afghanistan.
