Bangladesh court: UK journalist guilty of contempt

    Bangladesh Contempt of Court

DHAKA, BANGLADESH — A special tribunal in Bangladesh dealing with war crimes committed during the country's independence war found a British journalist guilty of contempt Tuesday for questioning the official death toll of the 1971 conflict.

The court ruled that a 2011 blog post and two other articles by David Bergman offended the nation and ordered him to pay a fine of 5,000 Takas ($65) or go to jail for a week.

Bangladeshi officials say 3 million people were killed and 200,000 women raped during the country's war of independence against Pakistan. Bergman said there was no evidence supporting that number. The issue is hugely sensitive in Bangladesh.

Head judge Obaidul Hassan said in his ruling that "freedom of expression can be exercised in good faith and public interest." But he added that Bergman was not acting in good faith or in the public's interest.

Bergman works for New Age, a Dhaka-based English-language daily, and contributes to the British newspaper The Telegraph.

Abul Kalam Azad, a lawyer who filed the petition against Bergman, said the judgment was "fair." But Bergman's lawyers told reporters that his posts and articles were within the "permitted limits of fair criticism."

    1. I support David Bergman on this and feel he is being targeted and persecuted by the Awami League regime and this is also a message to others to be quite.

In effect what has now happened is that there is a de facto law banning discussion on the exaggerated figures of the Bangladesh genocide of 1971 by the Pakistani regime.

Akin to similar laws banning even merely expressing doubts about the numbers of Jews murdered by Hitler in the second world war.

    2. 3 million were not massacred and most independent authorities say this, though it may have been 300,000 to 500,000 which is a huge number.

If it's 300,000 then that means in the 9 month war 33,000 people were killed per month that is around a thousand people a day.

A horrific number of people slaughtered.

    3. I have spoken to Bangladeshis raised in Bangladesh including one elder and he said the 3 million figure is nonsense and it was far less.

Another Bangladeshi I spoke to said the same.

    4. The 3 million figure has now become an official part of the quasi-religion of Awami League-ism, which just like Shiasm is obsessed with Karbala is obsessed with the 1971 war to an extreme level, to the extent that virtually every day on Bangladeshi TV there is a reference to the 71 war as if it happened yesterday.

However amongst ordinary Bangladeshis in normal life hardly anyone talks about it, particularly amongst the 0.3 million Sylheti community here in London.

Pakistan however definitely needs to do its Islamic duty and apologize to Bangladesh for its war crimes and atrocities.

Saudi and Turkish support for the Pakistani genocide of 1971 needs to be exposed and countered.

Thug Erdogan, whose regime essentially supports Pakistan's genocide of Bengali Muslims in 1971.

Faisal Saud, the Saudi "foreign minister, who has been "foreign minister" for around 40 years and whose regime are strong supporters of Pakistan, the Jamaati "Islami" terrorist organization and the 1971 Pakistani genocide of Bengalis.

    5. The Awami League is known historically for its totalitarian and anti-democratic tendencies.

Hasina leads it but further down the party structure are local businessmen and bigwigs who command "student bodies" (i.e. violent hooligan organizations) who terrorize and abuse people.

This harassment of people by what are essentially local mafia groups affiliated to the Awami League is what is annoying a lot of people in Bangladesh.

I, like most Bangladeshis, can't wait for the day that Bangladesh is never ruled by the Awami League or BNP ever again.

This case is almost heading towards making Bangladesh a police-state, as the Awami League tried to make it before.

And when it is said to them (hypocrites): "Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad Peace be upon him , Al-Ansar and Al-Muhajirun) have believed," they say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Verily, they are the fools, but they know not."(2.13)

                  1. The Awami League has always had a communist tendency within it apart from its actual leftist allies in its coalitions.

This communist edge towards the Awami League meant that in the 1970s they tried to create a north Korea style totalitarian state, but fortunately failed. No one can ever make Bangladesh a police-state in the long run due to the geography and demography.

                  2. In this current tenure in office they are reverting to their natural and inherent tendency to curb all criticism and opposition.

The Hasina regime needs to respect democracy or be asked to leave.

                  3. The other problem, especially from the perspective of the Dhaka middle class, is the alternative is in some ways even worse.

The BNP led by the corrupt Khaleda Zia allied to Saudi-backed fundamentalist terrorist organization, Jamaat e "Islami".

I just pray that the Awami regime does not convert Bangladesh in to a de facto police sate with a compliant media, ban on all criticism of the Hasina regime but with the ostensible trappings of "democracy" for foreign (particularly) western approval.

I will make du'a that both the Awami League and the BNP never rule Bangladesh ever again and that Jamaat e "Islami" is destroyed totally and forever in Muslim Bangladesh.
