  • Pashtun nationalists being murdered in Pakistan

[MENTION=1068]gadoonwal[/MENTION] has long pointed out the violence being directed at Pashtun nationalists by the Taliban (who covertly receive support from Pakistani military intelligence elements).

The following article just confirms what he has long explained.

Situationer: ANP in the cross hairs

    Aurangzaib Khan

HALFWAY through the interview, Mian Iftikhar gets a phone call. He doesn’t recognise the number. Should he attend, he wonders out loud. It turns out to be someone from Khyber News, the Pashto TV channel. They want to know his views about a journalist, a staff member, who died recently. Of natural causes, we may add.

He speaks fondly, on air, about the services the man rendered in the field of journalism. He ends the call saying, “It’s no consolation but we are grateful to God that he died in peace of natural causes in a place where people routinely pick up body parts of their loved ones.”

The irony is cruel, the imagery unsettling. But Mian Iftikhar should know. As the general secretary of the Awami National Party (ANP) that has buried nearly a thousand of its activists, including leaders, killed in bombings or targeted killings, he spends more time these days offering condolences than attending to party matters.

And in between, he, a marked man high on the militant hit list, must every day contemplate his own chances of dying a natural or a violent death. Nothing in his bearing suggests this worry, of course — except that he takes care to go alone when he goes out, so no one else gets hurt when they come for him.

    The long shadow of Swat

The wave of targeted killings aimed at the ANP in the wake of the Swat operation in 2009 has never quite receded. Over the last few months, it has escalated to an extent that is alarming even by the ANP’s own grim standards of losing leaders and activists to incessant hits. In Swat alone, according to Swat ANP president Sher Shah Khan, there have been 24 targeted killings of ANP workers in the past three months. Overall, 22 members of the Swat Amn Committee, that the ANP constitutes a big part of, have been killed since 2009.

“All through the Swat operation and beyond, our stance has been unequivocal: we are against terrorists, good or bad,” says Mian Iftikhar. “We stand for peace and we are being punished for that ideological stance. There is no resistance against militants in Mardan, Charsadda and Swabi. There are no Amn Committees there. They are targeting the Amn Committee in Swat for fear that if it succeeds against the militants, others will follow suit.”

When the ANP came to power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2008, says the party leadership, it inherited a Swat and Malakand from the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal government that was virtually under the control of militants. Even though the ANP paid a bitter price, losing party stalwarts like Bashir Bilour and others to their anti-militancy stance, the government was able to clear the region of the Taliban.

Since 2013, when the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) came to power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the militants have been resurgent in the valley. The ANP, and independent observers, attribute this resurgence to the ambivalent policies of the government, and the pro-Taliban stance of the PTI and the Jamaat-i-Islami in the provincial government.

“They want Imran [Khan], Nawaz [Sharif] and [Tahirul] Qadri that fit into their plans, not the ANP,” says a Swat-based ANP activist. “Not a single word was spoken about peace at the dharnas. While political gatherings go without any threat in Islamabad and Lahore, our corner meetings are targeted.”

    Hit hard in Karachi

In Karachi, where the ANP has a strong following, party cadres have been hit hard by the TTP-Swat. Since elections in 2013, when the TTP declared war on the ANP, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Pakistan People’s Party, asking voters to stay away from campaign meetings and polling, the ANP has lost candidates and elections to targeted attacks in neighbourhoods such as Lyari and SITE where it won in 2008.

According to Zia-ur-Rehman, a researcher based in Karachi, 70 ANP activists have been targeted in Karachi alone. “The party leadership has crossed over to right-wing parties like the JI, the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and the PTI to stay safe,” he says. “Others have gone back to their hometowns in Swat and Bajaur to escape attacks.”

Observers point out that behind the targeting of the ANP, the PPP and the MQM is the desire of militant groups to wrest control of Pakistan’s commercial capital.

    Surviving the odds

Political and independent analysts suggest that for a party like the ANP to survive these dark times, it must shift the focus from the centre to the front line leadership in its rank and file. “They will need to reach out to the young workers that are still ardent despite the huge odds,” says a Peshawar-based party worker. “They will have to address corruption, do away with dynastic politics and build on the achievements made during their last government, such as education.”

While there are no immediate solutions to containing the threat, Khadim Hussain, a security analyst, suggests that party activists should stay away from Amn Committees. “The security forces and the state intelligence apparatus use them as sandbags for intelligence gathering, which makes them vulnerable,” he says.

“After military operations, the army should hand over security to the police. Policing should be improved because despite the PTI’s claims of having reformed the police force, they still allow militant sleeper cells, either for fear or because the provincial government is sympathetic towards them.”

      Dear Bengal tiger.
GHQ launched the Talibans movement in the 90s for more then one reason.
Pakistan was also fully supported by the US.In fact US and Saudis funded pakis.
The main task was to first creat pupet govt in afghanistan to be fully control by islam abad.Punjabi establishment have deep knowledge of divide and rules policy.
So pakistan and iran both supported different ethnic groups.
Afghanistan was divided country.Northren allaince was backed by iran, india and Russia. The pashtun dominated TALIBS WERE created by pakistan.
Hamid Gul and General Babar even warned Mulana SAmi Ul haque to allow ,,isi,, officails to visit HAQNAIA MADRASA in akora khatak to recruite young TALIBS .
At one stage Mulana refused to co-operate but later he supported the movement.
He allowed the ,,,isi,,agents to recruite young pashtuns talibans mainly from afghanistan.
The US later shower missiles on afghanistan after talibs refused to sign an agreement with US for reaching to central asain market.
So more then half of afghanistan was occupied by pakistan and the rest was under the control of iranian backed northren allaince.
      Even Karzai himself said this.
Finally the US attack afghanistan to stay in the region for its stratigic interests.
The westrners can never be honest with eastreners. The main aim was to get control over the main ruite to central asia and block china .
Pakistan and US played double game here.
Both countries never want peace in afghanistan. They played this talib talib game for over 10 years.
US AND pakis both killed innocents pakhtuns on both side of durand.
US never fire a single shot on GHQ WHERE all the evils coming from. They never fire a single shot on southren punjab where highly train talibs get training.
They bombed the innocents pashtuns of waziristan.
ISI moved terrorists to swat region and even try to move them to yousufzai country of buner, swabi and mardan however ANP govt exposed them and stop them in Buner.
Many pashtun nationalists leaders like brave FATEH KHAN of sulatn waas village fought against the GHQ/TALIBS in Buner. They pushed the talibs from sultan was .
Fateh khan was belong to qumi watan party of sherpao.Later the isi launched operation against pashtuns nationalists leaders in that region .Fateh khan was killed so as many others local leaders of ANP,QWP ETC.
Leaders like shaheed Bashir Bilour died for his land and people.
Aftab khan sherpao was attacked twice and got injured but he stand by his people .
Asfandyar wali khan was attacked in his own Hujra.
The sucide bombers were brought in pak army vehicle near his hujra.
There are sucide bombers runing like dogs after pashtun leaders.
I have asked these questions from many pashtun leaders.Their lives are at risk 24/7.

Punjabi establishment hate every pashtun leader whether it is pro or anti.
Mulana diesal was attacked more then one time.

This is a plan for complete punjabization of pakistan specailly pashtuns.
Not a single school was bombed in punjab why?

PTI is another card of punjabi establishment to make fool of pashtuns.
PTI leaders in pashtunkhwa hate the name of pashtun.
These are low life people working for punjabi establishment against their own people.
This is to shut th mouths of nationalists in the name of naya pakistan.
Naya pakistan mean the death of pashtu and pashtuns.
I am glad that they are exposed.I hope the next election will be the end of PTI in pashtunkhwa.

      GHQ WALA will fail .

ANP days are numbered, including those who follow anp.they will be butchered in open and in public

I hate ANP,MQM and Diesel more than anything else in pakistan.

Diesel use Islam for his political purpose, otherwise i know him personally and his youngest son has married to a 14-15 years old 8th-9th grade girl, perhaps the most disgusting family out of pakistan

ANP even though on ocassion i have priased some of the steps they have taken but they are similar to Noora ganja and zardari, they will never do anything good for the local, past 5 years of performance in KPK is a proof.they have f up the entire education infra of KPK,it was PTI with massive education reforms, today KPK has least numbers of student out of school in Pakistan

The future belong to PTI,under the possible mid term election early next years,we will have a govt for all not for a single ethnicity as is Nawaz for punjab or Zardari for sindh.

And mark my words,if ever PTI has come to power, the likes of Diesel and asfandyar wali will be forced into exile like altaf hussian

            GHQ WALA will fail .
TALIBS,PTI ARE LIKE TWO SIDE OF ONE COIN.
            1. The US wanted "Islamic" fighters to spearhead the anti-Soviet guerilla war in Afghanistan.

They deliberately wanted to "ensnare" the Soviets in to a war in Afghanistan against the world-renowned fighters that are Afghans/Pakhtuns.

They and their Anglo-Saxon predecessors, the English, were fully aware of the formidable fighting nature of Pashtuns and wanted to use that to lure the Soviets in to a trap in to Afghanistan and give the Soviets payback for the American humiliation in Vietnam.

Apart from the fact that Afghans/Pashtuns are by nature tough fighters they wanted to "Islamicize" the anti-Soviet resistance and thus worked with Zia to spread Deobandi madrassas in northern Pakistan (Pakhtunkhwa) which have now led to the emergence of the Taliban.

            2. The US can pull the plug on the Pakistan project anytime they want but they choose not to and are involved in the murder of Pashtuns. I am not sure exactly why but it might be as one of the Bilour brothers said, they and other colonialists (the British) are still angry at "their" (western imperialists, though America had never encountered Pashtuns directly they still see the defeat of the British as a defeat of fellow white Anglo-Saxon Christians and thus "their" defeat too).

The American writer Christine Fair has been producing literature "exposing" the "Jihadi" nature of the Pakistan army.

Christine Fair, producing nonsense books on the Pakistan army when the fact is it is the US regime and military that are their masters and sponsors.

This is nonsense. The US regime knows this and it is in fact they who instigated it. They are anti-Pashtun and are happy to see the death and suffering of Pashtuns and 3 million Pashtun refugees.

The British hated Bengalis because Bengal was the most rebellious part of British India, this is why they engineered the death of at least 3 million (probably far more) Bengalis in India in the 1940s in the horrific Bengal famine.

As [MENTION=1201]Toramana[/MENTION] has pointed out when the imperialists hate a certain race for its resistance they make sure they inflict a brutal and horrifying punishment on it e.g. Pashtuns, Kurds and Bengalis.

            3. Yes, I am well aware of the murder of ANP workers by the Taliban (controlled by Pakistani intelligence) and in addition to what you have said, I will also add that:

a: Afzal Khan Lala has the people of Pakhtunkhwa by his resistance to the evil Taliban. They have tried to murder him.

b: Mian Iftikhar Hasan, another ANP leader, has lost his son.

Legendary Pashtun nationalist leader Afzal Khan Lala who has refused to be intimidated by the Taliban despite their attempts to kill him.

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, another heroic Pashtun nationalist who had his son (left) murdered by the Taliban, may Allah have mercy on his son. Ameen.

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, who lost his son to the Taliban.

However despite these senior ANP leaders surviving, one major ANP leader has indeed died at the hands of the barbaric Taliban on the soil of his beloved Pakhtunkhwa Watan.

            Bashir Bilour!

Bashir Bilour, right, whose defiance of the Taliban and refusal to leave his beloved Pakhtunkhwa Watan and death at the hands of extremists has inspired a whole nation.

Grave of hero of Pashtuns, Bashir Bilour, (rahmatullahi 'alaih).

The Pakistan army and ISI can kill Pashtun nationalists but they know that they cannot kill the 30-60 million Pashtuns on both sides of the so-called "Durrand Line".

Pashto and Pashtunwali will live on and never be defeated by the Taliban, Pakistan or America.

Pashto existed before the USA was even created in 1776, or before Colombus even set foot in the new world in 1492.

Pashtunwali will continue. It survived the British, it will survive the Americans and their surrogates, the Pakistanis.

As a Muslim Bengali I salute my brothers in the ANP, the party of the legendary Fakhr da Pakhtun, Bacha Khan (rahmatullahi 'alaih) and Wali Khan (rahmatullahi 'alaih) who helped us Bengalis in our times of need and risked their safety for us in the form of protesting for our rights in 1971, risking arrest and imprisonment.

Da Fakhr da Pakhtun, Khan Bacha Khan (rahmatullahi 'alaih).

America and its Pakistani proxies can never destroy Pashto or Pashtunwali!

sigpic"When it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "Why, we only Want to make peace!" (2.11)

                KHILAFA:

“When you all (Muslims) are united (as one block) under a single Khalifah, and a man comes up to disintegrate you and separate you into different groups, then kill that man.” [Muslim]

Also, there are many Hadith of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) condemning nationalism or tribalism. The following Hadith is one of them and it exemplifies the meaning of unity in Islam:

"Whoever separates from the*Jama’at*and leaves obedience (to the leader of the Muslims) and dies then he dies the death of one of*, and whoever sets out against my*Ummah*with his sword, and strikes the good of them and the evil of them, not keeping away from a believer due to his*, and does not fulfil the covenant with the one who took it, then he is not from my*Ummah*and whoever is killed while under a flag of ignorance, getting angry for the sake of tribalism or fighting for the sake of tribalism or calling to tribalism then his death is that ofjahiliyya." [Ahmed]

Therefore, unity means sticking to the*Jama’ah*of the Muslims, being obedient to the Khalifah, not fighting the Muslims and staying away from nationalism. The existence of different Fiqhi opinions amongst Muslims is not disunity. Rather the existence of different countries and states based on nationalism and the absence of a leader that rules according to the Book of Allah are the real causes of disunity – something that our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) has prohibited and warned us against over and over again.
This topic can be aptly concluded with the wise words of the second Khalifah of Islam, Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen, Umar ibn al Khattab (RA), who said:

”There is no Islam without Jamaa’ah and there is not Jamaa’ah without Imaarah (leadership). And there is no Imaarah (leadership) without obedience.” (Reported by ad-Darimi in his Sunan)

Referring legislation to other than Allaah and His Messenger,:

Allaah The Almighty Says,"Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taaghoot [false judges] while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray. And when it is said to them: “Come to what Allaah has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion. So how [will it be] when disaster strikes them because of what their hands have put forth and then they come to you swearing by Allaah: “We intended nothing but good conduct and accommodation.” Those are the ones of whom Allaah knows what is in their hearts, so turn away from them but admonish them and speak to them a far-reaching word."[Quran 4:60-63]

Such is the state of the hypocrites when they reject the legislation of Allaah and His Messenger saww and their hypocrisy is revealed before others. When this happens, they invent false and fabricated excuses and falsely swear in order to acquit themselves.
They say: “We did not intend to contradict the Messenger of Allaah,*, in his judgment; we only meant to settle and reconcile the two parties and we wanted to be good to them both.”
Strangely, when they find the judgment in their favor, they accept it; otherwise, they turn away. Allaah The Almighty has informed us about this where He Says,"But the hypocrites say: “We have believed in Allaah and in the Messenger, and we obey”; then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not believers. And when they are called to [the words of] Allaah and His Messenger to judge between them, at once a party of them turns aside [in refusal]. But if the right is theirs, they come to him in prompt obedience. Is there disease in their hearts? Or have they doubted? Or do they fear that Allaah will be unjust to them, or His Messenger? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers." [Quran 24:47-50]

*Defaming the believers and doubting the intentions of the obedient is another of their sly characteristics. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):*

"Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them - Allaah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment."

                          Karachi Terror Crackdown Sparks Outcry

Police efforts to bring order to Pakistan’s commercial hub spurs accusations of extrajudicial killings

By NATHAN HODGE and SYED SHOAIB HASAN
                          Updated March 9, 2015 3:35 p.m. ET

KARACHI, Pakistan—On paper, Pakistan’s war on terror is being fought in the lawless tribal belt along the Afghan frontier. But the government’s battle against militant groups is also claiming hundreds of lives each year here in the country’s commercial hub.

In November, the family of Mufti Shah Faisal read about a deadly confrontation between security forces and Pakistani Taliban militants on the eastern outskirts of Karachi, a sprawling port city of more than 20 million people.

Among the seven suspected Taliban killed in the shootout: Mr. Faisal. That surprised Kalimullah, Mr. Faisal’s brother, who said he had seen security officers detain his brother three months earlier.

“We found out from the newspaper,” said Mr. Kalimullah, describing how he went to the mortuary to retrieve the body. “The police said, ‘If you make any noise about this, we will kill all of you.’ ”

Police provided a list of two encounters in which they had received complaints, but didn’t include any of the current cases The Wall Street Journal has investigated.

More than 800 people have been killed in confrontations with police since a major security operation began in Karachi in September 2013, according to statistics provided by the police in Sindh, of which Karachi is the capital. During those operations, law-enforcement officers have killed 175 terrorists, police say.

Police have labeled most of the rest as dacoits—armed robbers—which human-rights activists say allows the police to escape scrutiny.

Karachi has a reputation for being a lawless place, where rival gangs and sectarian groups settle scores through targeted killings. According to official data, at least 1,823 people were killed in attacks by militants, sectarian and criminal gangs in 2014.

And it is a dangerous place to be a police officer: Security officials say 142 police were killed last year in Karachi, mostly gunned down in assassinations.

Ghulam Qadir Thebo, Karachi’s police chief, said the number of suspected criminals and terrorists killed in police operations reflected the success of the operation to bring more order to the city. His force of 29,000 police, he added, is stretched thin.

“The Karachi police have done wonders,” he said, adding that the murder rate has dropped since 2013, when there was an average of 7.6 killings every day in the city. Today, that figure stands at 3.2.

“Why has this crime figure gone down?” he asked. “Because of this massive action by the police.”

Rights advocates and local activists, however, say most of those shootouts usually end with dead suspects and no police casualties. According to police statistics, only 11 of the 142 police officers killed in 2014 died in such encounters.

“They call them encounters,” said Zohra Yusuf, the chairwoman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. “We call them extrajudicial killings, because it’s bypassing the legal process. They may be criminals, they may be terrorists, but they are not being brought before a court of law.”

Human-rights groups have advocated for full investigations into suspected cases of extrajudicial killings.

Allegedly staged shootouts by police are a widespread problem in South Asia: In neighboring India, authorities and civil-rights groups say so-called fake encounters are rampant. Senior government ministers say they have taken steps to rein in the practice.

In Karachi, residents and prominent local politicians say the recent incidents have focused disproportionately on the Pashtun population.

“They go and pick up people from the mosques, they say you are Taliban,” said Qari Muhammad Usman, head of the Karachi chapter of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, a conservative religious party that largely represents Pashtuns. “And increasingly what’s happening is the Pashtun community is being targeted.”

Mr. Thebo acknowledged “one or two incidents” in which police may have staged encounters to cover up extrajudicial killings, but said: “We are not against any community. Karachi police are professional police—we are only against criminals.”

He added that police are investigating incidents where complaints have been made about extrajudicial killings.

The Taliban are a movement that originated in the Pashtun tribal heartland on both sides of Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan.

Activists and Karachi residents say the government’s dragnet against Taliban militants has ended up claiming the lives of innocent Pashtuns who come from the same tribe as Baitullah Mehsud, the former chief of the Pakistani Taliban, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2009.

“It’s become a crime to be a Pashtun, especially a Mehsud,” said Mawlana Umar Sadiq, a former lawmaker who is a member of the JUI-F.

Pashtun activists say that was the case of Shah Kalam Mehsud, an M.B.A. student and businessman in Karachi who police detained in February 2014. Mr. Mehsud’s family originally came from Pakistan’s tribal belt, but he was an unlikely militant: He was a member of the student wing of the Awami National Party, a Pashtun secular nationalist party.

According to a complaint filed by a relative, police officers picked up Mr. Mehsud at home, along with his brother and another man. The two other men were released, but Mr. Mehsud’s body was later found at a hospital. Local media reports said he was shot in an encounter with the police.

“They said he was a dacoit and killed in an encounter,” said Raqab Ali, a friend. “But why would someone whose business had revenues of eight million rupees ($78,560) a month do this?”

Fake encounters aren’t a phenomenon that only touches Pashtuns, rights groups say. In neighboring Baluchistan province, government forces have waged a long-running counterinsurgency campaign against ethnic Baluch separatists. Baluch activists say local residents are picked up by local authorities, with the bodies later surfacing in Karachi.

“People who are kidnapped in Baluchistan, their bodies are dumped in Karachi,”
said Mama Qadeer Baluch, an activist whose son, Mir Jalil Reki, was picked up by security forces in 2009 and whose body was later found near the Iranian border. “If they dump the bodies here, they can say there are targeted killings going in Karachi.”

Members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, a powerful political party that represents Urdu-speaking Muslims whose families fled India following the 1947 partition of British India, also say their activists are also dying in police custody.

“It is reaching the height of frustration among our workers and the party followers,” said Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari, a party spokesman. “You need to be guarding our city—instead of appearing as a force that is not loved, but rather hated by the law-abiding citizens.”

A veteran Karachi security official said the pursuit of suspects frequently ends in gunfire. But he dismissed concerns of human-rights groups, saying their complaints pale in comparison to the bigger problem of lawlessness in the country.

The official said police and prosecutors say courts often set free suspects, even when police present solid evidence against the accused. Witnesses routinely face intimidation, and convicted police killers have walked free after being acquitted by higher courts, he said, adding that freed criminals then return to target officials who arrested them. Prosecutors and judges routinely complain of intimidation in Pakistan.

The official then opened an oversize Samsung phone and scrolled to a photo of a man lying on a mortuary slab. The picture showed a man with what appeared to be two gunshot wounds: one at the base of the neck, and one directly under the chin.

The official said the man, an alleged Taliban member killed in a recent encounter with police, was suspected of being responsible for the death of another officer.

“I hit him with a hollow-point,” the official said matter-of-factly.

The war on the streets of Karachi shows little sign of abating. Local residents worry the government’s antiterror crackdown will mean more extrajudicial killings. Recent amendments and laws passed by Parliament, such as the Pakistan Protection Act, have given police and security officials new powers of arrest and detention without a court order.

“The state itself is paving the way for extrajudicial killings by introducing new amendments to the constitution,” said Abdul Razzak Abid Lakho, a senior JUI-F leader. “It is going to give the police and the security forces extraordinary powers.”

Another hero of Pakhtunkhwa, the legendary Afzal Khan Lala (rahmatullahi 'alaih) has died.

                            Khan Lala: Profile of valour

                            Rahimullah Yusufzai November 8, 2015

Mohammad Afzal Khan was an idealistic politician and an author with big ideas. He didn’t achieve most of his goals, but he never stopped struggling and saying things that he considered right

His name was Mohammad Afzal Khan, but he was commonly known as Khan Lala.
Being a prominent landlord from a family with the right pedigree, he was certainly a Khan. However, it was the title of Lala that he rightly earned and deserved as someone older and wiser. Khan Lala was like an elder brother to everyone. One didn’t feel like calling him Afzal Khan as Khan Lala sounded and felt better.
Khan Lala was 89 years old when he passed away on November 1, but his appearance as a white-bearded old man hadn’t changed all these years. His face was forever friendly and his talk was always familiar. The thought that he is no more is both strange and painful.
At his picturesque village Bara Drushkhela in Swat’s orchards-laden Matta tehsil, one saw a steady stream of mourners arriving to offer Fateha for the man who despite his old age stood his ground at this very place when the Taliban were rampant and feared. Though he had lived all his life in Swat, the last decade or so was the toughest and most dangerous because he had challenged the Swati Taliban in their stronghold at a time when most other politicians and notables were leaving their ancestral land and moving to relatively safe places such as Peshawar and Islamabad. Survival was the name of the game, but not for Khan Lala as he had already survived attempts on his life and attack on his house.
The term chivalry aptly applied to this veteran Pakhtun nationalist who lived by the code of honour of Pakhtunwali. He was both humble and fierce depending on the circumstances. For years he championed the cause of the Pakhtuns and advocated unity among the “lar and bar Afghans” living in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

High-level Afghan delegation in Pekhawar today to mark their respects for Afzal Khan Lala.

                            A picture from the past.

May the brave Afzal Khan Lala rest in peace. I am very sad at his demise, offered dua for him during a function in New York.

Death of Mohammad Afzal Khan (Khan Lala)is a great loss for Pashtuns.A champion of our national unity is no more. RIP. Struggle to continue.

                              In memoriam: Mohammad Afzal Khan

Khan Lala castigated his own Awami National Party (ANP) for signing an agreement with the Taliban, which he accurately predicted would embolden the jihadists to encroach upon other regions.

                              Dr Mohammad Taqi

                              November 05, 2015

Mohammad Afzal Khan of Swat, known reverently by the honourific Khan Lala, passed away this past weekend. Pashtuns and Afghans living on both sides of the Durand Line and the diaspora, mourn the demise of the octogenarian nationalist icon who spent a lifetime pleading and leading for Pashtun national unification (qaumi wahdat). To many Pakistanis he was known for his resolutely valiant stand against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) butchers in his native Swat in 2008 and 2009. Despite losing several family members and personal associates in jihadists’ attacks and himself receiving bullet injuries, Khan Lala dug in and put up a heroic resistance against the TTP when others, including the state and its organs, were capitulating. Ever kind to me, Khan Lala spoke to me in 2009 from his then besieged compound in his native Upper Durushkhela village: “How can I leave my family spread over five villages and my people all over Swat?” Khan Lala castigated his own Awami National Party (ANP) for signing an agreement with the Taliban, which he accurately predicted would embolden the jihadists to encroach upon other regions. He only came out of Swat after the deal with the TTP backfired and a military operation was launched, something he had consistently called for.

Afzal Khan Lala’s disagreement with his own party in 2008-2009 was not an aberration. Throughout his long political career he never shied away from speaking his mind and standing firm for what he truly believed in. Afzal Khan Lala was one of the top few landowners (Khans) of the Swat valley. He completed his studies in history, political science and law from Peshawar and Lahore, and briefly taught as well. He joined the leftist National Awami Party (NAP) in 1969 and became its provincial president for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (then NWFP) in 1970. He was elected to the provincial assembly from Swat in the 1970 elections and become the provincial minister for information and agriculture in the coalition government of the NAP and Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam (JUI). The late Prime Minister (PM), Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, later banned the NAP in one of the worst political victimisations in Pakistan’s history. Khan Lala, along with the top Pashtun and Baloch leaderships, was imprisoned in what became known as the Hyderabad Conspiracy Case. Khan Lala had been charged with leading a “militant separatist” group called the Pashtun Zalmay (the Pashtun youth). In an absolute travesty of justice, NAP was outlawed through a Supreme Court (SC) decision in October 1975. On November 5, 1975, the National Democratic Party (NDP) was launched by Sardar Sherbaz Mazari along with the leaders of NAP who were still free. After the politically motivated Hyderabad tribunal was disbanded, Afzal Khan Lala became the provincial president of the NDP.

The ANP was formed in 1986 through a merger of four leftist and/or nationalist parties including the NDP and Afzal Khan Lala was elected its second provincial president in 1987. Afzal Khan Lala was a very close associate of Khan Abdul Wali Khan, who had led the NAP, NDP and ANP but vehemently opposed the ANP cutting a deal with Mian Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML) in 1989. Khan Lala parted ways with Wali Khan’s ANP and formed what was called the ANP Haqiqi (real), which morphed into the Pashtunkhwa Qaumi Party (PQP) by merging with the Qaumi Inquilabi Party of Lateef Afridi and Afrasiab Khattak, who had also quit the ANP due to the same concerns. Khan Lala won a National Assembly seat from Swat in alliance with the late Benazir Bhutto’s PPP. The alliance then fielded him as a candidate for the PM slot in a lopsided contest against Mian Nawaz Sharif. He remained the deputy opposition leader in the 1990 National Assembly and became the first lawmaker to use the word Pakhtunkhwa in the house, much to the chagrin of the then speaker, Gauhar Ayub Khan.

In 1993, Afzal Khan Lala won his seat again and became the federal minister for tribal affairs in Benazir Bhutto’s cabinet. Khan Lala promptly demanded adult franchise for FATA and a right to appeal the draconian FCR in the regular courts. PM Bhutto took the flack from the establishment for Khan Lala’s proclamation and, according to his own account, asked him to modify his position. Khan Lala told the late and much lamented Benazir Bhutto: “Madam PM, I cannot change my stance. You may have to change my ministry.” Tribal affairs were swiftly removed from Khan Lala’s charge and he was given the Kashmir portfolio instead! Khan Lala continued with parliamentary politics for a bit but his heart was set on reunification of the Pashtuns across various geographical divisions. Unlike the Marxist irredentism of the late Ajmal Khattak and Nawab Khair Bux Marri, who saw national and class struggles intertwined with each, Afzal Khan Lala’s approach was indigenous and was anchored in the Pashtun tradition of the jirga to raise awareness and for collective decision making. Just like Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan went door to door with his message, his disciple Khan Lala also reached out to the mighty and humble alike to join the reunification effort. He arranged a series of jirgas inviting Pashtuns from both sides of the Durand Line, the last one being in 2012. He rejoined the ANP in 2006 but was never given his rightful station. The ANP overlooked Afzal Khan Lala in the senate elections, even after his monumental stance against the TTP, when it had the potential to send the grand old man to the upper house.

Afzal Khan Lala was the last leader who attempted to reorient Pashtun nationalism with its pan-Afghan roots. He wrote that to the east of the “Durand Line many Pashtun leaders struggled long and hard to win freedom from the British. However, in my opinion, the fundamental drawback was that (these) Pashtuns did not demand freedom from the British on the basis of the national unity of Pashtuns and for the reestablishment of Ahmad Shah (Abdali) Baba’s Afghanistan. All those great leaders tied the freedom of Pashtuns with the freedom of India. The face of the Pashtuns was thus diverted from the ‘north’ (Kabul) to the ‘south’ (Delhi). The split (Durand Line) that the British had caused in one body thus widened more.” Khan Lala wrote that the Durand Line was an “illegal, immoral and unconstitutional” demarcation but proposed for the involved parties to solve the issue through peaceful and democratic means. Just like he never imposed his devout religious views on anyone, he never forced his political vision on partisans, fellow travellers or opponents. He wanted the Pashtuns and Afghans to self-determinate their politico-national destiny. Afzal Khan Lala’s hospitality, self-reliance, dignity, towering personal integrity and determination under fire, along with his unwavering commitment to the Pashtun qaumi wahdat made him the paragon of Pashtun nationalism that he was adored as. He lived by his favourite lines from Amir Hamza Shinwari:

“So che ra ghund pa yaw markaz ye na krram

Harey tapay ta da jargo sara zam”

(Unless I unify Pashtuns around one centre With jirgas to their each abode I shall go).

Rest in peace dear Khan Lala; you were a league apart.

Afzal Khan after an attack on him by the Taliban.

Afzal Khan Lala was a great man. A man of wealth and lineage who did not use that to increase his wealth and restrict himself to exclusively working with the fellow rich, but worked for the improvement of the common Pakhtun. He did not flee his homeland in Swat to go and live in Islamabad, Lahore, the UAE, Qatar or the west or even Pekhawar, he stayed with his people and swore nothing would dislodge him from the area of his birth. A man of the people.

May Allah have mercy on him.
