Two Pakistan High Commission staffers under Bangladesh Bank scanner

Bangladesh Bank has started investigating bank transactions of two Pakistan High Commission staffers after a minister alleged that the ongoing BNP-led agitation had that country’s backing.

The central bank’s intelligence wing on Sunday asked all banks operating in Bangladesh to provide details of accounts held by Mohammad Mazhar Khan and Shahnaz Kausar.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, which deals with money laundering, terrorist funding and suspicious transactions, asked the banks to provide all details of accounts held by the duo, including those closed within Mar 2.

Khan was recalled to Pakistan from Dhaka on Jan 31 after the government raised objections against him for his alleged criminal ties and funding terrorism.

He was also arrested by Dhaka police once.

Media reports claimed he was an ISI agent involved in foreign currency forgery and smuggling.

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed recently pointed out Khan’s incident and said the ongoing agitation was an international conspiracy and Pakistan was directly involved.

“Pakistan is providing all assistance to this (BNP’s) movement because they want to avenge their 1971 defeat,” the minister had said.

The Pakistani military and regime still burn with pain at their humiliation and defeat in 1971 and cannot accept that Bangladesh is a sovereign state.

They interfere in Bangladesh's internal affairs and sponsor terrorism in the country.

Bangladesh is just like Afghanistan in that it faces a grave security threat from Pakistan.

The PIA have decided to shut down their flight operation to Bangladesh.

The page you're looking for doesn't exist. Browse Pakistan Tribune for telecom packages, government services, and free calculators.

PIA employees have been involved in criminal activity before and even been arrested inside Pakistan itself.

PIA Station Manager Ali Abbass was also held by the security forces in Bangladesh and was later deported to Pakistan. Several raids have also been conducted on the houses of PIA officials on suspicion of smuggling fake currency.

On December 31, the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) also arrested an employee of PIA at Benazir Bhutto International Airport for drug trafficking who was scheduled to fly to Birmingham, UK.

The aviation authority’s steward, identified as Irfanullah Shah, was arrested in possession of 4.5 kilogrammes of hashish concealed in his bag.
An ANF official, who requested not to be named, told The Express Tribune that the suspect, who hailed from Swabi, has been serving in PIA as steward for the last eight years. He was arrested outside the departure lounge during routine surveillance.

It’s not like PIA can not be involved in all these acts. They very well can.

The Pakistani regime and military need to learn that Bangladesh is an independent state and United Nations member we can not allow our soil to be used for sponsoring terrorism against other countries. We do not allow our soil to be used by groups such as the MQM or BLA which are opposed to the Pakistani military and regime.

Nor can we allow our soil to be used by the Pakistani regime to destabilize India.

We are a peaceful nation and seek peace with everyone and cannot allow rogue regimes like Pakistan to destabilize our country by seeking to use it as a place to sponsor anti-Indian terrorism or destabilize India.

If Pakistan continues with this then India should tell Pakistan's backers in Turkey and Saudi Arabia that Pakistan is destabilizing both India and the world's 3rd largest Muslim country Bangladesh and to exert some pressure on the rogue Pakistani regime.

Turkish prime minister Davutoglu, his AKP regime has been sponsoring terrorists in Syria to destabilize the country and his nation is also a strong supporter of Pakistan. Under his regime, the Bangladeshi embassy has been attacked by pro-AKP thugs.

Due to the intense brainwashing in Turkey, Pakistan is portrayed as an eternal friend and ally who Turks must have undying love and brotherhood for, this however can lead to Turks supporting things such as Pakistan's genocide of Muslim Bengalis in 1971.

Narendra Modi the Indian leader. India and other BRICS powers, China and Russia are concerned by the Turkish regimes' support for terrorists and separatists in their countries. China, Russia and India may come together and warn Turkey of the consequences of its consistent policy of trying to destabilize their countries using radical pan-Turkism and radical "Islamists". Modi may tell the Turkish dictator, Erdogan, to back off from messing around in India's region.

Turkey is facing greater isolation in the world and recently failed to gain a UN security seat despite lobbying many countries.

Pakistan-lover Khaleda wants to destroy Bangladesh, claims Minister Matia

A senior minister alleges ‘Pakistan's involvement’ with the BNP-led alliance’s ongoing violent agitation that has killed over 100 people this year.

Pakistan directly involved in violent agitation in Bangladesh, claims Tofail

Pakistan withdraws official from High Commission in Dhaka

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury claims the involvement was becoming “clearer”.

“A foreign airliner is funding the unrest,” the ruling Awami League Presidium member alleged in Parliament on Tuesday.

Last month, Bangladesh security officials searched the residence of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Dhaka Manager Ali Abbas. They suspect he is involved in smuggling of gold and fake currencies.

The PIA has suspended its Dhaka flights in protest over the search.

Matia is not the first Cabinet member to raise such allegation.

Last month, Tofail Ahmed claimed Pakistan was “directly involved” in the BNP’s agitation.

In January, Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka withdrew its official Mohammad Mazhar Khan after Bangladesh intelligence found him involved with terror financing.

The Bangladesh Bank is investigating bank accounts of two other high commission officials apart from Khan’s.

Matia Chowdhury said Pakistan wanted to avenge its defeat -- and the loss of its eastern wing -- in the 1971 Liberation War.

Dubbing former prime minister and BNP chief Khaleda Zia “a lover of Pakistan”, the minister alleged, “They (Pakistan and Khaleda) want to turn Bangladesh into a failed state, a safe abode for militants.”

She said the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami alliance was burning people to death, primarily targeting school students and innocent citizens.

“The Khaleda-led alliance wants to push Bangladesh’s towards destruction,” she claimed.

The pro-Pakistan Khaleda Zia is accused by some of wanting to make Bangladesh a Pakistani puppet state. Her regime used to use Bangladeshi soil as a base for anti-Indian operations thus causing problems between poverty-stricken Bangladesh and its giant nuclear neighbour. This furthered the Pakistani agenda i.e. creating tension between Bangladesh and India but weakened Bangladesh.

The Pakistani military and regime have never got over their defeat and humiliation in 1971 and this burns them with pain, and they are still eager for revenge.

They cannot accept that Bangladesh is an independent state.

Most other countries would have taken far stronger action than Bangladesh has if Pakistan was using its soil for terrorism or to destabilize another country.

Unfortunately the "opposition i.e. BNP and Jamaat are both controlled by Pakistan, so if they ever regain power they will once again make Bangladesh a puppet state of Pakistan especially in terms of ruining Indian-Bangladeshi relations.

Bangladesh is a poor country with 160 million mouths to feed, so it needs to trade with its neighour India (it has no border with Pakistan, around a thousand miles away), however Pakistan and its puppets such as Khaleda Zia and her BNP and also Jamaat e "Islami" do not care about the suffering of the Bangladeshi people so will try and stop this.

            EU pressure on Pakistan

The EU must exercise pressure on the Pakistani regime to stop destabilizing Bangladesh and sponsoring and supporting radical terrorists and others, whether it be politically, financially, militarily or morally.

The EU granted Pakistan special trade privileges in terms of exporting its goods to the EU. This was as a result of sympathy for the floods which affected Pakistan a few years back.

In 1970 when the then east Pakistan had a massive flood with 1/2 a million "Pakistanis" (Bengalis) dead, no one from west Pakistan even cared or went to visit east Pakistan.

The EU should warn the Pakistani regime that if they carry on destabilizing Bangladesh or promoting terrorism there they could lose this special trade privilege that they were granted and other things.

Raheel Sharif, the head of the Pakistan army. The Pakistan army has carried out genocide in 1971 as well as using fighter jets against its own Pakistani population. Apart from a bloody and shameful history of murder and genocide it also has a shameful history of defeat and humiliation e.g. the mass surrender of 90,000 Pakistanis in 1971, the biggest by far in modern history.

All eyes are now on Raheel Sharif, who is the real ruler of Pakistan, as he is the current army chief, on what his regime will do.

Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a senior leader of the pro-Pakistan BNP. Will his party ever abandon its role of being a proxy of Pakistan?

The BNP needs to be independent and rather than listen to any possible orders from Pakistan on killing Bangladeshis by burning vehicles, they need to refrain from violence and terrorism.

The BNP also need to abandon all pro-Pakistan policies especially of using Bangladeshi soil to sponsor terrorism in India for the benefit of Pakistan.

‘Khaleda wants us down to Pakistan's levels’

              New York Correspondent, bdnews24.com
              Published: 2015-03-07 13:09:49.0 BdST Updated: 2015-03-07 13:49:42.0 BdST

Khaleda Zia's violent agitation is aimed at pulling Bangladesh down to the levels of terror-ravaged Pakistan, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozzamel Huq has said.

Huq claimed at an Awami League meeting organised to mark the historic March 7 in Washington that Bangladesh has achieved significant progress under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership in the last six years.

"That upsets Khaleda Zia, because during this period, Pakistan has only gone down, paying the price of her long backing of terrorism."

"BNP's long agitation for two months now is nothing but a conspiracy to damage our economy and polity so that we are brought down to the levels of Khaleda's beloved Pakistan," Huq told the meeting.

The two month agitation has already cost Bangladesh economy significant loss -- a government estimate recently put that at TK 1.2 trillion.

More than 100 people have died, mostly in fire-bombings. Scores more have been injured.

Though initially written off as a basket case after gaining independence from Pakistan in 1971, Bangladesh has achieved significant progress in the last few decades.

Its annual GDP growth has steadily stayed above 6 percent despite a global downturn, its foreign exchange reserves have crossed the $20 billion mark, remittances from its nationals abroad have broken all previous marks.

More importantly, Bangladesh has been projected as a model of inclusive economic growth and it has achieved its 2015 Millennium Development Goals well ahead of time.

Its social sector achievements have also been striking and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has put Bangladesh ahead of India (not to speak of Pakistan) in many spheres like women's education and empowerment.
This has happened even as Pakistan has gone downhill, ravaged by terrorism, religious bigotry and ceaseless ethnic violence.

According to last year’s Global Peace Index (GPI), published by Australia-based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), Bangladesh is ahead of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Bangladesh’s state of peace was described as ‘medium’ as it secured the 98th position among 162 countries covered in the index.

India ranked 143rd in the index, Pakistan 154th and Afghanistan 161st.

Two other South Asian countries -- Nepal and Bhutan – are, however, ahead of Bangladesh in the GPI, which is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness.

Apart from peace and stability, Bangladesh is also ahead of Pakistan in different areas of human developments.

Bangladesh ranked 142 among 187 countries in the UNDP’s Human Development Index 2014 while Pakistan was placed at the 146th.

The UN has also placed Bangladesh among 18 fastest-growing countries in human development in its annual assessment that is published based on life expectancy, literacy, education and per capita income.

Liberation War Affairs Minister Mozammel Huq at the party meeting in Washington said BNP chief Khaleda Zia had decided to boycott the last general elections under pressure from its ally Jamaat-e-Islami.

“Jamaat thought they won’t be able to foil the war crimes trials if they had lost the elections miserably.”

The minister also claimed that the people had rejected the BNP-led 20-Party alliance’s agitations.

*A lot of this is Awami League (ruling party) propaganda against Khaleda Zia and silly.

The Awami League itself has many things it should be ashamed of e.g. brutal violence, corruption etc.

However the point is Khaleda Zia is indeed pro-Pakistan, and her notorious Pakistani-born son Tariq Zia probably more so.

My question for any BNP supporters are the following:

              - Why are you using Bangladeshi soil to wage a campaign against India on behalf of Pakistan?

              - Why are you trying to destroy India-Bangladesh relations on behalf of your masters in Pakistan?

              - If we don't trade with India which borders us on 3 sides, who will feed our 160 million mouths?

Do you think your masters, the Punjabi generals of Rawalpindi will?

No, they did not care when 1/2 a million Pakistanis died in 1970 due to flooding, since these Pakistanis were "not real Pakistanis, just Bengalis", so they did not care then and will not care now.

              - The whole Muslim world has good relations with India e.g. Saudi Arabia which gives more jobs to Indians than Pakistanis. Indonesia, Turkey, Malaysia, central Asia, Iran which supports India over Kashmir.

The only state in the Muslim world that hates India is Pakistan and this has nothing to do with Islam since Pakistan genocided Muslims in 1971, refused to let Bihari Muslims settle in Pakistan due to ethnic reasons and is now expelling Afghan Muslims from their homes.

So why are you trying to ruin and damage Bangladesh and its economy on the orders of your masters in Rawalpindi, Pakistan?

Why are you trying to make us have a cold war with 1 billion Hindus for the sake of your masters in Pakistan?

The logo of the pro-Pakistan BNP on the left with the flag of Pakistan on the right. The BNP is accused of being a pro-Pakistan party seeking to implement the Pakistani nationalist, ISI agenda in Bangladesh including destroying relations with India for the sake of Pakistan.

              The pro-Pakistan Khaleda Zia.

80 Shibir activists held, arms seized

70 bombs found in BNP man's house in Dhaka

                Star Report

The Islami Chhatra Shibir had been using Chittagong College and Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College as their arsenals for more than three decades, until police busted those in an overnight raid yesterday.

The Islamist party men were planning to unleash a terror in the port city using some of the firearms, including AK-22 rifles, single- and double-barrel rifles and foreign pistols, amid the ongoing political violence.

“They [Shibir men] have created a cantonment-like ambience inside the educational institutions,” said Abdul Jalil Mandal, commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, after raiding the Shibir dens.

Police recovered nine firearms and a large cache of ammunition and bomb-making materials from inside a hole near a staff dormitory of Chittagong College.

During the raid, cops detained 80 activists of Shibir, a pro-Jamaat-e-Islami student wing, and Abdul Wadud, finance secretary of Sramik Kalyan Federation, a pro-Jamaat labour organisation.

Locals in Chawkbazar, where the two colleges are located, said the area was comparatively remote and surrounded by hillocks. Taking this geographical advantage, Shibir men were using the government colleges as their hideouts and storing arms and ammunition there over the years.

Shibir men took control of the colleges in the mid-1980s.

Some of the alleged Shibir activists detained during police raids at Chittagong College and Govt Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College in the port city. A large cache of arms and ammunition were seized during the raids yesterday.

“It is very difficult to enter the hilly areas by Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College,” said a local, requesting not to be named.

In the two colleges, no organisational activities are allowed by the authorities except for those by Shibir, students said.

Nasir, an infamous Shibir cadre of the port city, started using the campus for criminal activities in the early 1990s when he built a den at two rooms of a hostel at Chittagong College.

From there, he used to control and give orders for carrying out operations at Mohsin College and Chittagong University, sources said.

Nasir, who is in jail since 1998 facing trial in several murder and arms cases, is believed to have a firm hold on the underground crime world in the port city still today.

From the jail, he maintains regular contacts with his accomplices by phone or other means with help from some corrupt prison officials and police, added the sources.

                THE RAID

Informed about a possible “sabotage” by Shibir men, police raided the two colleges.

It came as part of the police investigation to track down those carrying out attacks across the country, said Jalil, the CMP commissioner.

At least 86 people have died, mostly in petrol bomb attacks, since the BNP-led 20-party alliance called the ongoing nonstop blockade on January 5.

The raid started around 2:00am at Suhrawardy Hall and Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Chittagong College, from where police picked up 72 alleged Shibir activists.

Later, they recovered an AK-22, a three-nought-three rifle, a double-shot and three single-shot rifles and three foreign pistols as well as five rocket flares, 64 bullets and 25 cartridges kept in the hole.

The arms and ammunition were wrapped in a banner that had the name of Jamaat leader and war crimes convict Delawar Hossain Sayedee written on it, said Tanvir Arafat, assistant deputy commissioner of the CMP, who led the drive.

Police then started searching different dorms of Mohsin College, including Portuguese Bhaban, Muslim Hall and Old Canteen, and its adjacent hilly areas in the morning. From there, they arrested eight alleged Shibir activists and Jamaat leader Wadud.

They also recovered five machetes, gunpowder, two sacks of bottles (often used to make petrol bombs) and bomb-making materials from the Old Canteen, now being used as a student hall.

A section of teachers and officials might have been helping the Shibir activists, said the CMP commissioner, adding that police would detain those whose names would come up in the investigation.

Nazmul Shakib, a Muslim Hall resident who was detained from the nearby jungle, said he was hiding after being informed of the raid. He protested his innocence, saying he knew nothing about the arms and ammunition.

In another development, police yesterday arrested four BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men at Sitakunda and three other people from different areas of the port city for their alleged involvement in making and supplying crude bombs.

Law enforcers recovered 700 grams of explosives from one detainee.

                MORE CRUDE BOMBS

In the capital, police and Rab arrested two people and recovered 72 crude bombs and “a large amount” of bomb-making materials from the house of Jubo Dal leader Haji Newaz Ali at Lalbagh early yesterday.

The arrestees are Anis, 30, and Badsha, 40.

Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Lalbagh Police Station, claimed the house was being used for making crude bombs. Once made, the bombs were supplied to different parts of the city for carrying out subversive activities.

Newaz is accused in several violence-related cases and is on the run, he added.

Another Rab team seized 18 homemade bombs from near Doyel Chattar of Dhaka University yesterday, said sources in the elite force.

Suspected ISI man arrested in Gazipur

                  May 25, 2015 12:23 am

                  Our Correspondent . Gazipur

                  The arrested ISI operative.

The Detective Brach of police on Sunday said that they arrested a Pakistani citizen suspecting him as a member of Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence at a apparel factory in Gazipur.

Khalid Mehmud, 50, was arrested at the apparel factory named Unilense at Bhangnahati under Sripur upazila at about 7:00pm on Sunday.

He was employed as an electrical engineer at the factory.

Gazipur DB police officer-in-charge Amir Hossain said that they conducted a raid at the factory and arrested Khalid.

Khalid infiltrated in Bangladesh in 2014 concealing his identity and took a job in the factory, he said.

He was working in the factory although his visa had expired.

*The Bangladeshi government arrested him, rather than "disappear" him in a mysterious "accident".

Pakistan wants to use Bangladesh as an "east Pakistan" i.e. its eastern flank in its war against India.

So Pakistan wants to use Bangladeshi soil to sponsor anti-Indian separatists in India's north-east.

The fact that Pakistan is using Bangladeshi soil for this is an act of aggression.

However the Pakistani and "Islamist" propaganda machine will portray Bangladesh as the "aggressor" for not wanting its soil to be used as part of a geo-strategic chess game against Pakistan's rival, India.

Bangladesh needs to engage with sympathetic politicians in Pakistan such as Asma Jahangir, Asfandyar Wali and others to ensure in the future Pakistan doesn't do this. Just sitting down doing nothing and waiting for the Pakistanis is useless, instead there must be a pro-active policy working with moderate Pakistanis to oppose Pakistani destabilization of Bangladesh.

Pakistani operatives in Bangladesh have also been used to circulate Indian currency in order to weaken India.

Pakistani nationalists accuse the Bangladeshi government of being stooges of India when it prevents this sort of activity on our soil, however are they going to blame India for Kuwait recently arresting some Pakistanis for involvement in terrorism?

                    Fake Euros With Two Pakistanis

The two suspects and currency seized

KUWAIT CITY, May 24: Personnel from the Capital Security Directorate have arrested two Pakistanis, identified only as K.A. 44 years old and 34- year-old N.A., for allegedly attempting to exchange fake 10,000 euro bills at a local money exchange company, reports Al- Shahed daily. The daily added, the arrest came after the Operations Room of the Ministry of Interior received a tip-off from an unidentified source. Both men are believed to be members of a terrorist organization. Without giving more details the daily said the men have been referred to the concerned authority for interrogation.

When Kuwait does this, it's fine, but when Bangladesh does this then Pakistanis/"Islamists" start shouting "India", "RAW" (Indian secret service).

As if Bangladesh is a puppet state of India, when in fact Bangladesh is the 2nd biggest purchaser of arms from India's rival, China and only recently prime minister Hasina Wajid called for Bangladesh to start producing defence weaponry to export abroad.

                      Hamid Gul has died.

I take no pleasure in his death and do not gloat over it.

Death is something, even it be the death of an enemy, which should not be celebrated.

However Gul was a terrorist and worked closely with his American friends to destabilize south Asia.

Gul was also the man who apparently said Kabul should burn.

                        Pakistan sponsors terrorism in Bangladesh.

Pakistan has been involved in plots to murder the prime minister Hasina Wajid.

Hasina hasn't even killed a single Pakistan, though they still wish to murder her partly because they are still traumatized their defeat in the 1971 war, a war which they started.

Pakistan is trying to destroy the Bangladeshi economy.

The departure of Hamid Gul may not be a major blow to Pakistani terrorism in south Asia (Bangladesh, Afghanistan) etc.

However it is definitely something which Bangladeshis and other Muslims and other people in south Asia and the globe should be aware of.

These are indeed difficult days for Pakistani terrorists.

                        - Zaid Hamid arrested and held in Saudi for a while.

                        - Chinese pressure on Pakistan to stop supporting terrorists in Afghanistan.

                        - Dismantling of Pakistani-backed terrorist network in Bangladesh.

                        - Increasing military power of Afghanistan.

Indian currency notes found in container at Chittagong Port

Huge amount of Indian currency notes have been found in a container at the Chittagong port.

The Indian currency notes were found in the container that arrived from the United Arab Emirates and was marked as loaded with home appliances.

Customs officials found the currency notes in four boxes of the container on Sunday and suspect that they might be fake.

The container arrived in a ship from the UAE’s Fujairah port.

“We suspect that the other boxes in the container also have Indian Rupees,” Chittagong Customs Assistant Commissioner Mukitul Hasan told bdnews24.com.

National Board of Revenue chief Md Najibur Rahman and Customs Intelligence chief Moynul Khan went to Chittagong Sunday night after the haul.

“The container, which was inspected, has 165 cartons. According to intelligence information, there were contraband items in those,” NBR Chairman Rahman told reporters.

He said the importers declared that the container was carrying ‘home appliances’.

One Md Shahiduzzaman, who hails from Chittagong’s Hathajari and lives in Dubai, has sent the container.

Customs Intelligence chief Moynul Khan told reporters that he suspects these currencies were destined for somewhere else, using Bangladesh as a ‘transit’.

“Most of the Indian currencies seized in Bangladesh were fake and that might be the case with these as well.”

He said that two more containers will be inspected on Monday.

Indian revenue intelligence has long alleged that Pakistani agencies were involved in huge production of fake Indian currency notes in the Middle East, which were then shipped back to South Asia for entry into India.

During the last years, India says it has received much cooperation from Bangladesh and Nepal in busting these Pakistan-inspired fake currency rackets that Delhi sees as part of Islamabad's 'covert economic warfare' to undermine India's national economy.

                          Comment:

Virtually all of south Asia is working together against Pakistani terrorism be it Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka.

Pakistani terrorism is ultimately aimed at weakening India and thus Afghanistan and Bangladesh are seen as proxy battle grounds.

For years the Pakistani military enjoyed heavy support from the Saudi regime and others for their terrorism and destabilization of south Asia.

However this will have to come to an end.

The Bangladeshi economy is growing (the government spoke about investing $8 billion in infrastructure a few days ago) and its growth has had little to do with the racist anti-Bangladeshi regimes of the GCC e.g. Saudi, UAE etc.

However Pakistan has been discredited in the eyes of the Gulf Arabs over the Yemen crisis and the gulf Arabs can take revenge by getting closer to India as they have done. This also means ending support for Pakistani terrorism in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh and India are neighbours and India has a right to tell the racist gulf Arab regimes to stop supporting terrorism in Bangladesh and the destabilization of the country.

Modi in UAE recently where he won $75 billion investment from the Arab state. Modi may tell the UAE and Saudi regimes to stop supporting the destabilization of India via pro-Pakistan forces in Bangladesh.

Four Pakistanis among 'militants' arrested in Bangladesh

By AFP Published: November 7, 2015

DHAKA: Bangladesh police have arrested seven suspected militants including four Pakistani nationals, they said Saturday, accusing them of planning to commit acts of violence in the Muslim-majority country.

The seven, who were arrested on Friday and later taken to court for interrogation, are suspected of belonging to the banned militant group Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), police said.

“In primary interrogation, they’ve admitted that they’re activating the operation of the banned JMB. They gathered to commit acts of violence,” a police statement said, adding authorities believed the group was conspiring against the government.

The arrests come as tensions run high in Bangladesh following a spate of targeted killings and fears of mounting extremist violence in the conservative country of 160 million.

Dhaka police spokesman Muntashirul Islam told AFP those arrested included four Pakistani nationals, the first time police have claimed Pakistanis are active in the banned group.

Police said they had seized Pakistani currency and militancy books from those arrested, including one which spells out punishment for defaming the Prophet Mohammed(pbuh)

JMB militants have been blamed for attacks in recent weeks including slashing the throat of a Christian pastor and a series of murders of Sufi Muslims, who the militants consider as heretics.

Bangladesh is also grappling with a series of murders claimed by the Islamic State group (IS) in recent weeks, including the fatal stabbing of a policeman on Wednesday.

Islamic State has also said it was responsible for the murders of an Italian aid worker and a Japanese farmer, as well as a blast at the country’s main Shia shrine which left two people dead.

The government has rejected Islamic State’s claims, saying it does not have a presence in the country.

A branch of Al-Qaeda has also claimed responsibility for the murders of four atheist bloggers and machete attacks on publishers in the past year, calling the victims “atheists and blasphemers”.

The government, however, has blamed those attacks on local militants, along with the main opposition party and its militant ally, for orchestrating violence to destabilise the country.

The home-grown JMB, whose leaders were executed in 2007 over a series of blasts, have been trying to regroup in recent years.

The group was set up in late 1990s by Bangladeshi militants, some of whom had fought in the Afghan war against the Russians.

                            - How long is the Bangladeshi government just going to meekly accept Pakistan's de facto war against the Bangladeshi nation?

                            - The Bangladeshi government need to show the Pakistanis that they cannot sponsor terrorism in Bangladesh with impunity and that there will be a retaliation.

                            - I do not advocate support for guerilla groups inside Pakistan but at least political support for the Baloch, Sindhis and Mohajirs in Pakistan e.g. allowing a publicized visit by Hyrbyair Marri to Dhaka as a warning to the Pakistani regime.

If not allowing him a visit then at least publicly including the mention of Baloch suffering in statements by our foreign officials.

                            Hyrbyair Marri, Baloch freedom activist.

It's all because of war trial, says intel

SB reports to Home about recent targeted attacks; anticipates crimes like plane hijack; war crimes campaigners point at upcoming verdicts of SQ Chy, Mojaheed

                              Star Report

A certain group has been planning subversive and terror activities to “free war criminals now under trial”, said a recent intelligence report.

It is also out to “tarnish the image of the nation by creating anarchy and degrading law and order in the country”.

The report, prepared by the Special Branch (SB) of police, said the group might hijack a plane on international or domestic routes, abduct or kill any VIP and commit atrocities by exploding bombs.

Alerting the government to the plans, the intelligence agency recommended that security measures at key establishments be stepped up.

The SB submitted the report to the home ministry on October 29, four days before the scheduled date of hearing on review petitions filed by two convicted war criminals -- Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed of Jamaat-e-Islami and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury of BNP -- against the Supreme Court verdicts upholding their death penalty.

The apex court is now scheduled to hear the petitions on November 17.

The SB report came amid serious security concerns following a sudden spat of terrorist acts -- including killings of secularist bloggers, two foreigners, a publisher and two cops, and attacks on a pastor and a Shia gathering.

However, according to some security analysts, thwarting the war crimes trial might not be the only reason behind those attacks. Any militant organisation can carry out those types of attacks taking advantage of a volatile situation, they said.

Some apprehensions made in the SB report matched the deposition of Masud Rana, an activist of Jamaat's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, detained over the fatal stabbing of ASI Ibrahim Mollah at a Gabtoli checkpoint on October 21.

Several criminal acts, including the murder of publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan and police constable Mukul, took place after the submission of the report. Also, a prosecutor, several prosecution witnesses and campaigners of war crimes trial have received death threats.

Top police officials and people involved in the war crimes trial said the two convicted war criminals, who have strong followings in and outside the country, would somehow try to destabilise law and order to stop the possible executions.

The recent attacks were part of the last ditch efforts by the two to save themselves, they added.

Contacted, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said they have “evidence of involvement of the BNP and Jamaat in all the recent killings and criminal activities”.

"They are carrying out the crimes to jeopardise the ongoing war crimes trial and destabilise the country," he told this newspaper yesterday.

He added, "Jamaat, Huji [Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami] and JMB [Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh] are the same thing. They are doing these [criminal activities] to create unrest in the country."

                              'ISI CONNECTION'

Tureen Afroz, a leading prosecutor in war crimes trial, said the recent attacks are “linked with the trial and execution of war criminals”.

"There is no other equation," she told The Daily Star.

Explaining, she said whenever the execution of any war criminal nears, Jamaat-e-Islami and its associate bodies carry out subversive activities or at least try to do so.

“As the execution of the two is imminent, this time the impact is double. Threats on us have also increased," said the prosecutor.

The Jamaat and its wings opposed the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 and collaborated with the Pakistan occupation forces. Its campaigns against war crimes trials have been widely reported.

Tureen said Mojaheed is a powerful leader of Jamaat as he holds the rank of party's secretary general. And, Salauddin Quader is not only an influential leader of BNP, his "connection with ISI [Pakistani intelligence agency] is known to all."

She believes that these two serve interests of different organisations at home and abroad. In return, these organisations will definitely try to save their “close friends”.

She observed that such criminal activities may continue to take place until the execution of Salauddin and Mojaheed.

Shahriar Kabir, prominent war crimes researcher and first prosecution witness in the case against Mojaheed, said all the killings -- be it of police or bloggers -- are not isolated. "These are well-orchestrated and masterminded by ISI and executed by its local agents -- Jamaat as well as BNP."

Kabir is the executive president of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, which has been campaigning for the war crimes trial for over two decades.

He added, “Salauddin Quader Chowdhury is the key agent of ISI in Bangladesh while ISI is the main patron of Jamaat.

"Therefore, ISI cannot accept the executions of its top agents as it thinks the executions would mean a major political defeat for it in Bangladesh ... That is why it is trying to thwart the war crimes trial through these [criminal] activities."

                              MASUD'S STATEMENT

Shibir activist Masud admitted to police that his companion Enamul Haque alias Kamal, ex-president of Adamdighi upazila (Bogra) Shibir, stabbed the ASI dead while the cop was checking Enamul's bag that contained two firearms.

According to a video record of Masud's statement, he along with Kamal came to Dhaka from Bogra as part of a mission to carry out bomb attacks and assassinate six VIPs -- three civil society members vocal for execution of war criminals and three ministers.

A reporter of The Daily Star has watched the clip.

Masud said they brought a consignment of 10 improvised grenades, five of which police recovered from his rented house in Kamrangirchar following his information.

Police said the grenades charged at the Hossaini Dalan Shia gathering in the early hours of October 25 are similar to those recovered from Kamrangirchar.

Masud added he and Kamal were sent to Dhaka by some Jamaat-BNP leaders of Adamdighi upazila.

Masud had come to the city 21 days before he was caught for the first time. He used to recce the places of targets, posing as an egg seller.

From his possession, police seized a map that clearly directs the roads to different key point installations and areas where VIPs live.

"Based on his [Masud's] information, we raided several dens of the groups, but they had fled immediately after the arrest of Masud," said a senior police officer who led the raids.

"At some places we even found rice, cooked a day earlier but untouched," he said, wishing anonymity.

In his statement, Masud also said six other groups came to the capital on similar missions.

                              SB RECOMMENDATIONS

The agency report recommended ensuring strong security at all important installations like airports; public gatherings; bus, rail and river terminals; power stations; gas distribution centres; industries and factories; entertainment places; and offices and residences of foreigners.

It suggested setting up security wall and installing adequate lights at airports, seaports and all the KPIs. It also urged the government to ensure full-time watch at these installations by setting up control rooms or watch tower.

"Considering the matter with utmost urgency, adequate monitoring will have to be in place immediately," said the report, requesting all members of police and other law enforcement agencies to remain on high alert.

A certain group has been planning subversive and terror activities to “free war criminals now under trial”, said a recent intelligence report.

                                EU reaction?

What will the EU do if it is proven that the Italian murdered in Dhaka was killed by terrorists ultimately due to Pakistan?

Will the EU slap any sanctions on Pakistan?

Will the EU limit PIA flights to the EU?

Will it impose more visa restrictions on Pakistanis?

Will it remove the privileged export status Pakistan has?

As a Bangladeshi we are facing an American-Pakistani-Saudi terrorist nexus, but we defeated these terrorists in 1971 and insha'Allah by the will of Allah ta'ala we will defeat these terrorists once again.

Ameen, thumma ameen wa sallee 'alaa sayyidina Muhammad wa aalihi wa sahbihi ajma'een. Ameen.
