I am not a fan of geo but
There's article on tribune(a leading newspaper in Pakistan) that proved that Geo along with the Hindustan times conspired against ISI by accusing them of setting up a channel through Daud Ibrahim called 'Bol', Geo is the only channel that promotes this Aman ki Asha scam.

everyone knows that geo is the voice of truth in Pakistan. It exposes the crimes of army and govt. Thats why it is being targeted now.
lololol give me a break, Geo is allies with Nawaz Sharif and the Judiciary, all three of them have partnered against the army and the other parties like PTI, Geo basically helped rigged the elections through Najam Sethi and now control PCB and have the tv rights for all Pakistani cricket matches.

Najam sethi was a marxist during his college days and actually participated in the Baloch rebellion of the 70s, this is a fact, Nadeem F.Paracha wrote about it.

Hamid Mirs father was also a marxist, so was Asma Jehangir, and all other anti-state people in Pakistan, is that just a mere coincidence?

Your first paragraph is not a proof. you are refering to some article in some newspaper. grow up.

Your second paragraph is again a few sentences of some allegations but not a proof, he said this about him etc etc...
Would you please define ''patriotism'' ?
IF you ask me this question i can tell you in simple word and it has been written in the constitution that anyone who abrogate the constitution of pakistan is a traitor. So your ex head of pak army and many others are traitors. Why your army and ISI kill him ? unfortunately they are protecting him. Shame...

He was shot his family and organization said this could be ISI. His organization went a step ahead at that vary moment crossed the limit, yes let's agree that organization crossed a limit in bashing the best intelligence agency. In response to which we now call them traitors, we started believing they were funded by our enemies So people let's think for a moment, why can't the best intelligence agency provide any proof against them? Shall I accept the proofs given on Facebook?
One of our brilliant politician even said they rigged the election? Why can't an intelligent politician think that how can a media house that was running his advertisement under the label of 'paid content' rig the whole elections? Or the system of the elections we held was so weak that a broadcast of less than 30minutes by a media house was enough to rig them. Wasn't that intelligent politician running a mutual relief campaign with the vary same organization?

So let's think for a while, let's believe it was not them and I believe it wasn't them but than again who were those who attacked that guy and what were his objectives for those bullets in the body of that man aren't fake. What I wish from the core of my heart is that the best intelligence agency for the sake of God must investigate the matter and come up with the results and proofs as we and our intelligent people can't take any more of the conspiracy theories.

You are very right my brother, There is a huge flood on social media against geo loooooooooool. It makes me think how immature our agencies and few people are.
Geo did not blame ISI but a few individuals in ISI but still I think geo should not have done that like that. But it is not the first time that media has behaved like this repeating a bull**** several times. We have such such demonstration when a fake video was aired on tv in which a girl in swat was being lashed but no one said anything. So I want to say this is our immature media. It will take time to get maturity.
But there is a big lesson for geo and other tv to not repeat and do not create any sensation without any investigation.
But at the other hand, this was used in a very negative way by the ISI agency through different mediums and through different anchors.
ISI got an opportunity to bash geo so they did and still doing but this is really ridiculous and gives an impression that ISI is weaker and really frightened of media.

Plus, there are few agents on different social media and some organisations who are labeling geo, hamid, ansar abbasi, sethi and some others as some israeli and indian agents. but until now they did not provide a single solid proof of this ridiculous and funny claim. Come on my ISI agents and some unprofessional, please provide solid evidence and show it to the whole nation. Don't play hypocrisies.
I have differences on so many issues with geo but I have to say that geo is much much better than the other tv channels and it has more proffesional staff than the others.

well Najam Sethi works for Geo and he was the interim CM of Punjab during the elections, and after he did a good job helping Nawaz, he was rewarded by being appointed the chairman of the PCB

PTI only managed to win 1 seat in lhr, even though my friends there said they definitely could have won more, and in Karachi they only 1 seat out of 20, though people that i know said they certainly would have won seats in the middle class parts of Karachi, at least before MQM rigged the elections; Geo seems to have a soft spot for MQM, because they killed Wali khan babar, and Geo did not report it.

Bid to take Pakistan's Geo TV off the air fails

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority disowns decision by its own members to suspend Geo TV's licenses

An attempt to take Pakistan's largest and most influential television station off the air descended into farce on Tuesday after the country's broadcasting regulator disowned a decision taken by some of its own board members.

Three members of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) horrified journalist rights activists on Tuesday when they held a press conference declaring the organisation had suspended three licenses from Geo TV.

But hours later Pemra itself said the organisation "disowns" the decisions taken by the three men.

It said their discussions during the day "had no legal standing" because only three members of the 12 person board were present.

Although Geo has in recent weeks been dropped by many cable television operators the channel continued to air its nightly news programmes as normal on Tuesday.

The channel's troubles began when it aired explosive allegations that the country's top spy agency, the Inter Services Intelligence directorate (ISI) had attempted to kill star Geo journalist Hamid Mir as he was driving through Karachi in April.

The company has been at the heart of a roiling controversy that has engulfed the country's media and political class ever since.

The allegations against the intelligence agency were incendiary as few dare to publicly cross the ISI, an institution long regarded as among the most powerful in the country. The military responded by formally demanding Pemra revoke Geo's license for waging a "vicious campaign" aimed at "undermining the integrity and tarnishing the image of state institution".

Pemra said it was still working on the complaint, which it had referred to the law ministry for a legal opinion.

Geo's situation had become more perilous however after enduring relentless attacks from several other quarters.

Commercial rivals, keen to cut into Geo's dominant market position, have vigorously attacked the company on their television channels and in newspapers owned by other media conglomerates.

Former cricketer turned politician Imran Khan has also gone after Geo, accusing it of working to rig last year's election in favour of the governing faction of the Pakistan Muslim League led by prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

But last week the situation became far more perilous after religious hardliners accused the station of broadcasting blasphemous material – an especially serious charge in a country where religious inflamed sentiments can quickly lead to violence.

In the years since it was established in 2002 Geo has become a major power broker in Pakistan, commanding vast audience attracted by its lurid tabloid style.

Media watchers say it had angered the country's powerful army by its vigorous campaign for peace and trade with India as well as aggressive criticism by Mir and other journalists of the army's human rights abuses.

Geo executives insist they will not give up. In 2007 the channel was closed by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. It responded by staging its popular television talk shows on the streets of Karachi, a stunt that proved wildly popular and helped cement its reputation for doggedness.

*In the controversial Pakistani hate site "defence.pk", the Pakistani ultra-nationalists on there were celebrating wildly when media reports came that Geo had been banned.

                  Their "joy" was short lived.

EU warns against ban on Geo

ISLAMABAD: Amidst efforts to shutdown the Geo TV, the Brussels-based European Union Trade Commission has warned that it was monitoring Pakistan’s situation, and the country’s GSP Plus status could be withdrawn in case of serious restrictions on the freedom of speech.

John Clancy, the EU Trade spokesman, was officially responding to a query regarding a sustained campaign against Pakistan’s largest TV channel Geo after an assassination bid on the channel’s most famous anchor Hamid Mir last month. Mir was shot six times by unknown assailants in the port city of Karachi on April 19.

Under the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP+) scheme, Pakistan is allowed duty-free exports to the EU which has resulted in an annual increase in revenue of around €574 million (Rs78 billion).Clancy said Pakistan was granted the GSP+ preferences because it complies with the EU criteria of ratification.

“Nevertheless, this compliance is continuously monitored by the EU and, in case it is established that restrictions on freedom of speech constitute a serious violation of those conventions, the GSP+ could be removed by the EU as a result of an investigation,” Clancy told The News in an email from Belgium’s capital.

The EU is Pakistan’s single largest trade partner. The spokesman further added that apart from GSP, respect for the freedom of speech is also a key element of powerful regional bloc’s agenda.

“GSP is primarily a trade tool; the respect of human rights is relevant not only in the GSP context but is also a key element in the broader political agenda of the EU-Pakistan relations,” Clancy added.

Under the GSP+ scheme, Pakistan is bound to uphold the freedom of expression as it has signed a “binding undertaking” with the EU to effectively implement 27 core international conventions. One of these conventions is International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966, which calls for complete freedom of expression in the country.

There is a strict and effective mechanism devised by the EU to monitor the implementation of these conventions. In 2010, the EU revoked Sri Lanka’s GSP+ status over its human rights record.

Earlier this month, the EU had expressed concerns over attack on journalists in Pakistan, including serious attempts on lives of Hamid Mir and Raza Rumi.Michael Mann, a spokesperson for the High Representative/ European External Action Service, had informed ‘The News’ that the matter would be taken up during the EU’s 2014 human rights dialogue with Pakistan.

“Although, the biggest threat to Pakistani journalists is armed groups, there are also allegations of abuses committed by the military against journalists who report critically on their actions,” Mann said.He said that the EU delegation in Islamabad had and would continue to raise concerns with the Pakistani authorities about the freedom of expression in Pakistan.

Hamid Mir ‘won’t apologize’ to the ISI

                        By GHANIZADA - Fri May 30 2014, 2:50 pm

Pakistani journalist, Hamid Mir, who was injured following an attack last month in Karachi city, has said he still stands by his claims and wont comprise despite new death threats.

Mir had accused his country’s most powerful intelligence agency – Inter-services Intelligence (ISI) of orchestrating an assassination attempt on him.
He was injured following the attack which took place on April 19 and accused ISI and its chief Zaheer ul Islam of carrying out the assassination attempt.
His claims were publicly endorsed by his employer, Geo TV, which is Pakistan’s largest commercial news channel.

According to Mir’s aides, his stance against ISI for their alleged role in the kidnappings of thousands of people in southern Balochistan province had irked the agency.

Geo TV now risks going off air as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government has asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) to revoke Geo TV’s broadcasting license. A blasphemy case has also now been filed against the station.

This comes as Amnesty International in its latest report has revealed that the situation of journalists has deteriorated since the restoration of democratic rule in Pakistan.

In the meantime, Mir vowed to stand by his claims and said ISI is an organization which acts like “a state within the state.”
In response to a question regarding Geo TV’s compromise with ISI, Mir said, Geo TV has only apologized for the coverage of the incident. When the channel was showing footage of the attack, I was lying unconscious in the hospital.

“I had nothing to do with any of it. This is between Geo TV and the army, I need justice, my stance on the issue is the same as it was five weeks ago, I had told my organization that the ISI was a state within the state,” Mir told Deutsche Welle.

He said, after the attack, many people told me to leave Pakistan and get medical treatment from a foreign country.
“I decided to stay in the country, then, I was told that I could be targeted inside the hospital, I received more death threats after I was released from the hospital, those who tried to kill me are cowards,” Mir added.
He said, “I will work for democracy and the life treats will never kick me out of my direction.”

Pakistani TV channel sues powerful spy agency for defamation

                              BY MEHREEN ZAHRA-MALIK
                              ISLAMABAD, June 6 Fri Jun 6, 2014 3:09am EDT

(Reuters) - A Pakistani television channel is suing the powerful spy agency for defamation over accusations of being anti-state, it said on Friday, in a move unprecedented in a country where public criticism of the military is taboo.

Geo News, part of the privately owned Jang Group, has also given the ISI spy agency 14 days to issue a public apology.

"Geo and Jang Group (have) served a legal notice on the Ministry of Defence, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority for defaming and maligning the group," the channel said in a report published in a newspaper owned by the media house.

"More than 8,000 journalists, workers and professionals attached to the group and their families are not only being harassed but also attacked and tortured across Pakistan."

In April, Pakistan's Defence Ministry had demanded that the licence of Geo News be suspended after it reported that the ISI was behind the shooting of one of Pakistan's most famous journalists.

Since the dispute began, Geo News has been taken off the air in several parts of the country or been moved to obscure slots on the channel lineup by the cable operators, allegedly under pressure from the military, according to the lawsuit.

Distribution of the parent group's newspapers has also been disrupted.

Last month, the channel apologised for the allegations in an attempt to resolve an issue that has added to tensions between the civilian government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the all-powerful military.

But temperatures have failed to cool and in a lawsuit the channel has now asked the powerful spy agency to retract its defamatory statements, publicly apologise and pay $500 million in damages.

A spokesman for the military was not immediately available for comment.

April's shooting of Hamid Mir, a journalist anchoring Pakistan's top political news talk show, sent a chill through the journalism community weeks after television anchor Raza Rumi was attacked in the city of Lahore. Rumi survived but his driver was shot dead.

Although Pakistani media have become increasingly vibrant in recent years, with stories exposing corruption or injustices appearing frequently on the pages of the country's many dailies, public criticism of the army or the ISI is largely taboo.

No one has claimed responsibility for the recent assaults, although the Taliban, holed up in mountains on the Afghan border, have made repeated threats against domestic and foreign reporters for portraying the insurgency in a negative light.
