WASHINGTON: Pakistan has a role to play in the Afghan reconciliation process and a political element is important to resolving the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, a senior United Statesí envoy said.
Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke rejected the assertion that Pakistan army is opposed to Afghan reconciliation. “I do not have personal evidence or intelligence that supports that interpretation of what has been going on,” Holbrooke told CNN in an interview when comments on involving Pakistan, he said the neighbouring country has a role in Jammu and Kashmir which cannot be ignored, reported the PTI.
ìNothing what the interlocutors had said with regard to Pakistanís role in Jammu and Kashmir is wrong. After Simla Agreement, whenever talks were held with Pakistan, Kashmir has figured in it,î he told reporters here.
Pakistan has a role in Jammu and Kashmir. How can you ignore it?î asked the chief minister.
Reacting to BJP criticism of Dileep Padgaonkar, head of the interlocutorsí team, for his comments, Omar said it was their habit to create an issue by listening to half the story. ìFormer premier Vajpayee went to Lahore and spoke about resolution of Kashmir,î he said.
On Sunday, the BJP slammed Padgaonkar for his comments on involving Pakistan in resolution of the Kashmir issue and demanded the PMO to clarify if this was part of the brief of the team. Padgaonkar had stuck to his remarks saying what he had said about Pakistan was ìobviousî and there was nothing new.
