  • NATO approves plan to hand over Afghanistan security to Kabul government

Not that it has much to do with this, but I always wonder why NATO still exist. It's not exactly necessary anymore.

Well NATO was formed as a response to the Soviet Union (I personally don't think it was ever necessary but I'll just go along with the reason), and now that it's gone, there's no major military power that's challenging the US. What's the point? We should just divert foreign resources to helping countries develop and get out of the slump the Cold War put many of them in.

Yes NATO had to do with the WARSAW pact and that is one of the criticism leveled against NATO, as to why post-cold war it is still there. NATO though has seen new life spurred into it due to the intervention of the 90s (Yugoslavia, etc) and it has shifted to that, rather than conventional cold war defense.

Yeah, that's totally true. It should be noted that WARSAW was founded in response to NATO, not the other way around. There was a short period where the Soviet Union was trying to make peace with the West, but we basically spit in their face.

You are right, although I would be careful to throw the blame on the west for that one. The initial stages of cold war were a very messy time.

Oh, I'm not someone who "blames the West" for every little problem, far from it. I love Western society, and I love the USA. I wasn't trying to say that. I meant to say, we didn't need the Cold War. Look at when Henry Wallace ran for President in 1948. Part of his platform was ending bad relations with the USSR, and people in the USSR and Eastern Europe actually had rallies in support of him.

Well, there you go. US policy in asia and the middle east certainly hasn't been good recently.
