  • PA passes CRBC bill

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Friday passed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chashma Right Bank Canal (Lift-cum-Gravity) Project Bill 2010 to control land in the CRBC project area.
Speaker Kiramatullah Khan presided the session. Israrullah Khan Gandapur of the Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) and Mufti Kifayatullah of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) proposed amendments, which they withdrew later as the government introduced these changes.
PPP Parliamentary Leader Abdul Akbar Khan and Israr Gandapur, in their identical adjournment motions, said the government held in abeyance 333 new development schemes costing Rs17 billion in the annual development programme (ADP) due to flood devastation in the province.
Israrullah Khan Gandapur observed that the departments concerned were not preparing PC-I of the suspended projects, which could cause problems in the next ADP and delay the schemes.
Abdul Akbar maintained that the ADP process should not be halted and the departments should make PC-1 of suspended schemes. He said an elected assembly had approved these schemes. “Maybe we can get foreign money and would not be able to make preparations for these projects within a short time,” Abdul Akbar added.
PPP Senior Minister Rahimdad Khan, who is the minister for Planning and Development, said there was no restriction on departments to make PC-1 for the suspended schemes. Abdul Akbar and Gandapur withdrew their adjournment motions after assurance by the senior minister.
Muhammad Zamin Khan of the PPP said valuable machinery, including tractors and bulldozers, in various agriculture departments were not in use and thus rusting. He said they should either be used or auctioned after repair.
MPA Mian Nisar Gul said the entire province was faced with shortage of doctors. He said around 50 posts of doctors in Karak hospitals had been lying vacant for the past one year. ANP’s Atifur Rehman asked the government to take positive steps for the recovery of Ajmal Khan, vice-chancellor of the Islamia College University, kidnapped on September 7 last.
Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain said it was the responsibility of the government to protect its citizens. He said the government was making serious efforts for the safe recovery of Ajmal Khan.
Minister for Health Syed Zahir Ali Shah praised police for safe recovery of Prof Dr Intikhab Alam. The government also introduced the University of Peshawar (Amendment) Bill 2010. The speaker adjourned the sitting till Monday, October 18.
