  • Zalmay Rassoul underlines Iran’s key role

TEHRAN (NNI): Afghan-istan's Foreign Minister Zalmay Rassoul has underlined Iran's important role in issues related to his country. "Iran is a great neighbor and a fiend of Afghanistan, and Iran's presence in issues related to Afghanistan is very important and influential," Rassoul told Fars News Agency, reminding Iran's effective participation in the Kabul Conference. The minister also lauded the close ties between Tehran-Kabul, and underlined that "the friendly and brotherly ties between Tehran and Kabul will be continued similar to the past". During the Kabul Conference in the Afghan capital on July 20, Iran urged the international community to help Afghanistan take control of all affairs in its hand. Addressing participants at the Kabul International Conference in July, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki called on all the world countries to support full transfer of power to the Afghan government and help Kabul take control of affairs and security in different parts of the country. Mottaki reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran always supports "Afghanization of affairs" in the country, and "believes this important task will be carried out (merely0 through the support of the international community". Mottaki stressed that after nine years of occupation, the country is still experiencing problems in fighting drug trafficking, insecurity and poverty and also in reconstructing infrastructures and localizing security and policy, and described the aforementioned as challenges which should be addressed properly. Iran has always urged for a regional approach towards the settlement of problems in Afghanistan, and called on the Kabul government to pave the way for the withdrawal of the alien forces from the country.
