  • Pakistan Floods: Sacrifice Education, Increase Army Funds

So rather than reducing the perks for politicians/bureucrats/generals , the puppet government is slashing funds for education. I guess, they don't really care, as their own kids go to US and UK universities.

Sacrificing education for floods « ‘Tis my say.

Conveniently, the government has taken the easy way out. Rather than reducing the royal expenses of the people elected on our votes, the government is up for reducing education sector to rubbles. In fact, it’s a barely erect facet already. With the 50 per cent cut from last year’s Rs30 billion to this year’s Rs15.2 billion allocated to Higher Education Commission (HEC), the latter is struggling to stand up to its commitments. The commission has already reduced foreign scholarships by 80 per cent and is desperately trying to continue funding the students already on scholarships. The criticism from many quarters has helped nothing and now, the government has decided to take another bite off the miniscule share for the sector. In the last two quarters, out of the 15.2 billion spared for higher education, only 1.7 billion has been handed over so far. The protests and retaliations from teachers, professors and students are insignificant to the elected representatives.

Due to the scaling down of funds, 71 universities are at the brink of closure. The staff faces wage-delays, teachers are not sure of the pays and students can not even think of venturing for a project since the university can no longer fund it. If this state continues some universities will have to be closed and a university being shut down is lot different than a power plant shutting down. You can’t make up for it with a few hours of load shedding. Sadly, the government does not seem to realize this.

On the other hand funding for military has been increased by 110 billion. This doesn't include the expense on "War on Terror" as that is funded directly by US.

      Talal,
India has started an arms race, we can't match it but we do need to maintain the minimum deterrence
Hmm .. Generals do nothing but play with their mizziles and bums, eh ? Why pile up conventional weapons and engage in arms race, when you have a new-clear deterrent and a first-use policy ? You know that Pakistan will lose in a conventional war. The only thing that prevented India from responding after the 2002 and 2008 terrorist outrages, was the First Use Policy of Pak Army and pressure from US. Not the conventional weapons.

Anyways I don't see how this could possibly be any of your business drone
It is my business. Because the day Pakistani Elite quit fleecing their own people and start worrying about Pakistani awam , Pakistan will stop being nuisance to the region.

Pakistani Elite ( feudals/bureaucracy/military) needs an enemy, just to continue enjoying their privileges. It encourages fear psychosis and paranoia in the society (all too apparent in your media), just so that it could play the part of a knight in shining armor and "rescue" the terrified awam.

So awam goes ahead make silly comments like this :
better the army than some corrupt ol goon chairing the education board
You are a sensible fellow. I have read your posts when you interact with other members. Why can't you realize this simple fact that the Education Board is corrupt because Army wants and needs it to be so ?

ISLAMABAD: The government agreed on Thursday to immediately release funds for a 65 per cent increase in the salary of university teachers and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) requested the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa) to withdraw its call for an indefinite strike in state-run universities.

"Educated people are not so easily manipulated, so it is clear that the government doesn't want to give so much money for education. Always about power and control."

Really sad though, especially because in name it is Islamic, and yet does not follow what the Qu'ran teaches.

^ that is true but they cant keep people from educating themselves, and thus you see institutions like NUST and Agha Khan emerging, NUST is ranked among the QS top 400 and it is a non-government institution..Almost 90% of the kids goto private schools in Pakistan, and that shows a trend among Pakistanis willing to go the extra mile to send their kids to school even when the government wont

Are you saying that 90% of all Pakistani kids go to pvt schools or 90% of school-going kids go to private institutions ?

If latter is the case, then it is very disturbing trend for Pakistan. It means that the government has abdicated it's responsibility of public education, only the wealthy can afford education and send their kids to private schools ( who after graduating, go to foreign universities). The poor have no opportunities but to send their kids to madrassas.

I agree, because in Pakistan education is a luxury. It is not required by law. For this reason as you said Drona only the wealthy can afford it, or if the poor can only afford to send one child, then they send their sons.

Education offers hope. I want to hope for the children of Pakistan.
