US troops 'murdered Afghan civilians and kept body parts'

Cpl Morlock (l) and Specialist Wagnon (r) and 10 other infantrymen have been charged
A group of US soldiers murdered a number of Afghan civilians and took body parts as trophies, documents released by military officials allege.
The charging sheets relate to allegations that five US soldiers were involved in the murders of civilians in January, February and May of this year.
A further seven servicemen are accused of a conspiracy to cover up the crimes.
Lawyers for some of the accused have denied the accusations, while the army has yet to begin a review of the cases.
    'Appropriate engagements'
In charge sheets obtained from the US Army, Staff Sgt Calvin Gibbs, Cpl Jeremy Morlock, Pte First Class Andrew Holmes, Specialist Michael Wagnon and Specialist Adam Winfield are accused of murdering male Afghan civilians with grenades and firearms.
Other soldiers were accused of stabbing an Afghan corpse, taking or possessing photographs of casualties and beating other men in an effort to keep them from talking to investigators.
The soldiers were attached to the Army's Fifth Stryker brigade, which deployed to Afghanistan last year and has seen heavy fighting around Kandahar. They were based in Washington state.
Army spokeswoman Major Kathleen Turner told the BBC the cases were in a preliminary phase of investigation and military prosecutors had yet to decide whether to move ahead with proceedings.
The BBC's Kevin Connolly in Washington says the legal process is likely to be long and complex.
Among other charges, military prosecutors say Staff Sgt Gibbs possessed finger bones, leg bones and a tooth taken from Afghan corpses, and showed fingers to another soldier and threatened to kill him if he reported drug use to commanding officers.
Staff Sgt Gibbs' lawyer Phillip Stackhouse told the Associated Press news agency his client said the shootings were "appropriate engagements", and he denied any conspiracy to murder Afghans.
The case against the men is built largely around statements by Cpl Morlock, US media report.
But Cpl Morlock's lawyer told the Seattle Times his client's statements were made while he was suffering from concussion, was under the influence of prescription drugs, and was being evacuated.

I didn't want to read that horrible article.
But a local paper had this rundown. Can you believe they make a huge news article out of 30 people rallying to help the monstrous-seeming man?

I remember that that type of 'church' is frequented by types that love Israel, Bush, etc.
When living in that area, I met an unpleasant woman, the friend of a friend, who attended that 'church'. Truly, these places are more like pep clubs for Israel and neocon policies.
Nazarene 'churches' are fundamentalist but mostly the people are concerned with how to make more money and have better social connections.
No one would take them seriously. For they have little to do with any real religion, just some unbalanced people. Unfortunately those Nazarene outfits were expanding rapidly in this region especially in the 1990s. In this decade, I don't know if they are popular. They may be MORE so, who knows?

This is to give some background that most Forum members may not know as to what type of people could be DEFENDING this PFC, who, if guilty, is clearly the agent of the devil in these cruel killings and behavior.

Ironically that Nazarene 'church' like most Protestant fundamentalist groups, warns members about the devil's attacks.

                            Here is the article:
30 rally for Boise soldier accused of murdering Afghan civilians

                            Published: 09/09/10

More than 30 people showed up at a Boise rally on Thursday in support of an Army private from Boise who is one of five soldiers accused of the murders of three Afghan civilians and the beating of one or more fellow soldiers.

PFC Andrew H. Holmes is charged with murder in the first killing....

                            Holmes denies the charges.

Supporters gathered in the sanctuary of the Five Mile Church of the Nazarene. Speakers described Holmes as kind and warm and said they do not believe the accusations against him.

Several who spoke are former military men. They asked where Holmes’ commanding officers were and suggested those leaders should be accepting more responsibility for the deaths than the lower-ranking Holmes.

George Robinson, of Boise, who said he is a former staff sergeant who served 23 years in the military, called Holmes’ superiors cowards.

“I ask them to stand up and take responsibility,” Robinson said.

Attendees includes Holmes’ mother, who said the family did not attend the church but knew people in it.

For more details on the rally, pick up Friday's paper.

                            {My note: who needs more details on a 30 person rally?!}

Fortunately, not all readers believed the line of argument to blame superiors.
The reasonable reaction below was seconded by several other readers:

I just love how people rally around someone when they basically have none of the facts. Just because he is a soldier and from Boise does not make him innocent. Lets wait to see what they have against this guy before we turn him into a martyr and nominate him for sainthood."
