Vets Get Ecstasy to Treat Their PTSD

A pair of psychiatric experts think they’ve got the answer to the soaring number of troops coming back from war with PTSD: have them undergo intensive psychotherapy — while they’re rolling on ecstasy.
Dr. Michael Mithoefer and Anne Mithoefer, a psychiatric nurse, are the South Carolina pair who’ve been spearheading research into ecstasy, known clinically as MDMA, since 2000. After one successful study on 21 PTSD patients between 2004 and 2008, they’ve now received the final okay from FDA and DEA officials to start a study entirely devoted to former military service members.
“My sense is that, especially after we published the results of the first study, these institutions are more open to the idea,” Dr. Michael Mithoefer tells Danger Room. “Obviously, this is still new and experimental, and it can take time to get through to big institutions.”
With $500,000 in funding from MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies), the two are recruiting 16 veterans — they’re hoping for a 50-50 split between men and women, and want most of the participants to have been diagnosed within the last 10 years.

“These will mostly be veterans from Iraq or Afghanistan, because longer duration of PTSD means more complicating factors,” Dr. Mithoefer says, adding that he does anticipate enrolling 4 vets from earlier wars and is still accepting applications.
Participants will undergo a preliminary screening process, and then partake in three solitary, 8-hour therapy sessions with both doctors. While tripping out, they’ll be asked to revisit the traumatic experiences that triggered their disorder. Dr. Mithoefer thinks MDMA acts as a catalyst for “an optimal zone of arousal” that prevents patients from becoming overwhelmed or, on the flipside, shutting down and detaching altogether.
Of course, the Pentagon’s still struggling to better diagnose and address PTSD, most recently with a cutting edge 72,000 square foot research facility. But despite the military’s gradual thaw on alternative methods to treat the disorder — already, they’ve funded everything from yoga and acupuncture to “Warrior Mind Training” — top brass have yet to endorse MDMA.
“We’re had several conversations with people at Veterans Affairs hospitals and officers at the Department of Defense, but so far haven’t convinced them to participate,” Mithoefer says. “That said, we’re moving forward and still making every effort to get them involved.”
In the meantime, the Mithoefers anticipate finishing this latest study within three years. Teams in Switzerland, Israel, Jordan, Spain and Canada are in various stages of similar research.

This results in sending the soldiers from one type of nightmare to a WORSE nightmare: this abominable drug !
Then these people are going to be DRIVING on the streets or causing other trouble?
The brain is ruined permanently by such stuff.
That means a gigantic risk to the entire society for DECADES as these people age, and likely get addicted to these treatments, and the cycle will continue, IF this is OK'd.

I forgot that essential point when reading articles which PURPORT to sound as though someone is shouldering responsibility for treating these problems.

But there really is NO treatment that works even SLIGHTLY.

        Except the obvious.
Don't send them to Afghanistan to start with, ever ever ever....

Shlombay, tell that story that you began on the protection of women [was that the one?] thread about the problem you had when the guy in the Bronx was put out that you were angry about his callous attitude toward Afghan women when he was over in the country I assume?

            IF you want to.
            If you don't that's fine.
It was an Afghan vet though, right?
The Vietnam ones were not ever given full help they needed to reassimilate into civilian life here.
They never got a large part of the benefits which they were promised, apparently. They feel badly gypped. This smoldering anger causes many problems and destabilizes the fabric of American life.

That's very kind of you to say! One of the very few on PF that may say any good words at all about my posts here!!

Well the appreciation works the other direction, as in that thread I had voted you to receive a Congressional Medal of Honor for Defense of Afghan women !
You didn't see I guess. Well you should be receiving it in the mail anytime soon, so look out for the postman...!

Seriously you DESERVE a round of applause for doing that.
No average person would ever stand up for any women any time any place here.

What an absolute degenerate the guy was.
That's why I fear there is too much Islamophobia as well as this often evil attitude of American Supremacy and everyone else is slaves for any creep who goes to their country even as a tourist. Let alone to kill the people for nothing and subject them to misery.

Did you have to remain much time in the booking place ? I hope they let you go right away. You should NOT have to suffer for behaving in a chivalrous way.
THAT should be an example for average people here who have no concept of chivalry toward women.
Not only has that nearly vanished especially in large cities. But the opposite attitude is taking hold.

I see the purple ribbons streaming from your medal for valor!

I absolutely WILL pray. If you want, send message when near the day so I will focus that day or morning or afternoon, Eastern Standard Time. If don't want to, I understand.

The Muslim police guy HELPED you by minimizing his account of the problem - I didn't quite get that part. Or you hit him, too, when he got in the way, it sounded like ?!

Should be a youtube clip to show this type of smirking ex soldier that their consciences need serious work!

Overall, don't worry, for such a tough display to confront injustice is going to be rewarded.

You know that there are actually stories of cases where Angels came and punched people who were being really awful like this man ? The people felt it at the time and had bruises even.
Finally they shaped up after being beaten a bit. It seems nothing else made an impression on them. Nice words of warning to correct themselves went unheeded. Until the Angels went to work punching ! Some people seemingly don't get the message otherwise.

So I'm sure the Heavenly Angels watching you fight were clapping their hands and not sorry at all that you gave that guy something to repent !

Inshallah your court situation will turn out the best way. Be sure to let me know if you can.
I am worried until it's dismissed hopefully.
