Protest over ‘blasphemous wall chalking’
One killed as protesters, forces clash in Mirpurkhas
* 10 including four Rangers personnel, a policeman injured in cross firing
MIRPURKHAS: A man was killed while more than 10 people, including Rangers and police personnel, sustained injuries on Monday after protesters and security forces clashed in Mirwah Gorchani town in Mirpurkhas.
The clash occurred after a mob tried to set fire to the Bhemomal colony.
Earlier in the day, a few people allegedly saw a man writing blasphemous words on walls. The man later escaped towards Bhemomal colony, the people claimed.
Afterwards, hundreds of people gathered and surrounded the colony. They demanded the suspect be handed over to them.
Rangers and police reached the spot, while senior police officers also arrived to bring the situation under control.
However, the enraged people burnt down the wooden boundary of the colony and entered the area to apprehend the suspect. They also pelted the houses with stones.
Law enforcement personnel fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd. Some miscreants within the crowd started firing shots at the security forces. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one of the protesters was killed, while four Rangers personnel and a policeman also sustained bullet injuries. Heavy contingents of police and Rangers are still deployed in the colony to stop further violence.
Police have so far arrested 10 people for their involvement in the incident. app
