  • Afghan couple 'stoned to death' over love affair Read more: http://www.news.com.au/w

A MAN and woman have been stoned to death in northern Afghanistan after being accused by the Taliban of having an affair, a witness and an official said Monday.

The 23-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were killed because "they had an affair," said Mohammad Ayob, the governor of Imam Sahib district in Kunduz province.

"Two people were stoned to death by Taliban in Mullah Quli village late yesterday," he said. The village is under the control of the Taliban.

Mullah Quli resident Abdul Satar said about 100 people, most of them Taliban insurgents, gathered in the village on Sunday evening as a statement was read out saying the pair had confessed to their affair.

He said the man was married to someone else, and the woman was engaged.

"The Taliban convicted both to stoning to death, some from the crowd started throwing stones at the couple until they died," Mr Satar said.

The couple had their hands bound behind their backs and were forced to stand in an empty field as their sentence was carried out, he said.

A local Taliban commander, who contacted media but refused to give his name, confirmed the killings.

"The couple confessed they had eloped together and based on their confession they were stoned to death," he said.

Under Islamic Sharia law, sex between unmarried people is punishable by public beatings, while punishment for those caught in extra-marital affairs is death by stoning.

Earlier this month, the Taliban publicly flogged and then killed a pregnant widow for alleged "adultery" in western Badghis province.

The killings are a grim reminder of the Taliban's harsh 1996-2001 rule, when apparent crimes were brutally punished after summary trials.

As well as lashings and death by stoning for alleged adulterers, people accused of theft regularly had their hands or feet amputated.

In regions that have come under Taliban control as the war drags towards the end of its ninth year, rough justice is meted out in the same manner, and includes execution of people accused of "spying" for foreign forces.

Well... Love and lust are two diffrent things but no one should be allowed to take another human life like that. A village full of murderes went home to their lives I guess. No guilt no regrets. We have become animals feasting on each other.

When we can't figure out how to solve our more important issues, we start killing people by accusing them of having committed crimes. I highly -- MORE than highly, in fact -- doubt that the couple confessed. And if they didn't confess, where were their witnesses?

@Sher Khan and Master Khan: I am really appalled at the way educated Pashtuns (besides being human) like you supporting this crime. Wait until Talibans stone you for talking to women (including me) on PF. Because essentially, any kind of "interaction"between males and females qualify as adultery and hence stoning to death.

Dearest Master Khana au crime partnera, you are sitting in a democratic country and talking of banning AZADI in Pekhawar? Pekhawar has upheld its moral values without ANY Taliabns and our culture does not need some nescient and barbaric beasts to teach us the spelling of morality. It's not that people in Pekhawar are running around naked, and are relentlessly fornicating. If the meaning of "azadi" to you is the "declaration of love" between a male and female, then I think you should be sitting in the Kunduz province, and cheering up with the 100+ local people throwing stones at them, right? And how dare you even thought of bringing these primitive barbarics to our Pekhawar (although they are sitting there)?

@Jamaludeen: Here is what (in brief) convinces me to despise the brutality of talibans: Everything for Talibans is adultery; they are insecure men and they have to vent out their frustration and insecurities on men (as in this case), women (the pregnant women that they shot two weeks back), and children (the 7 years old girl that executed). The so-called trials are always unfair, and the families are threatened and tortured to side with them. The victims are beaten to death to confess the crimes as we saw in this case. And not to forget the political gain--the story truly highlights how weak is the present govt of Afghanistan is in protecting the rights of its citizens--the rights given to them by the constitution of Afghanistan.

adulters, fornicators, and azada khalk need taliban. We need progress. Not dumtob. So let us punish the damman and zinakara khalk. So people focus on the more productive stuff. Like education, work etc. Instead of fornicating, dancing, singing and reading Ghani Khan's poetry.

If fornircation and azadi lead to underdevelopment, then the West wouldn't be power block of the world today. Period.

You can progress in worldly matters, even though you are a fornicator....Like you might be a boss of a company and fornicate. If you can handle your company it wont affect it. But imagine cheating while married. That is an ill of society and it corrupts the society. Imagine it leading to divorce, leading to single mothers, leading to children who are confused and do not get a proper upbringing. You ignore those issues and focus on 'development'..development under wat cost??? It is like you saying oh i am a billionaire, but you destroy peoples lives (through zina)....good job for your so called development

You meant cheating? I don't need the brutality of Talibans to do justice with me. I will ask for a divorce which is my legal right and quite a civilized one.

^ Aseer Jaana! When on earth will you Taliban-lovers realize that the Taliban may be great to you all in one part of the Pukhtun land but they're beyond worse in another part -- like in Swat, Buner, etc.? Quit assuming that everything we believe is shoved down our brainwashed throats because, guess what, I can and will and actually DO say the exact same about those who are pro Taliban. Have you forgotten what they did to our Swat? Oh wait - that was propaganda! Even though I lost many relatives and my family witnessed it all, I'm just brainwashed and am saying things that are coming from unauthentic sources. Yet, everything you all are saying, that's pro-Taliban and that the Taliban are innocent people who JUST want to enforce Islamic law on our land, is coming from authentic sources. Is this so? Or am I just being overly emotional about something as trivial as millions of people being affected by the beliefs and laws of the Taliban? This must be so, yes.

Please, I'm not even sorry that I haven't and never will forget that. And guess what - it was actually the TALIBAN who destroyed Swat. Taliban-supporters are free to think whatever they want, just as I'm free to think whatever I want. They weren't so Islamic when they burnt down the over 200 schools (most of which were only for females and others for both males and females), or when they murdered innocent students who were going to become our future physicists and other intellectuals. Neither were they so Islamic when they brutally murdered those innocent men who were seen giving water to police officers / govt officials for iftari!

To me, all Taliban are one nonetheless, and nothing they do will ever get support from me. To you, all might be good, just as to me, all the opposite.

Yeah, so the married person is then committed adultery - but the unmarried person with whom he is committed adultery is actually committing fornication, NOT adultery. In this case, it's the female who didn't commit adultery and was stoned to death. Even those who agree that stoning to death is an Islamic punishment will tell you that this is un-Islamic because, IFFF this couple really did what they're accused of having done, then the girl fornicated and should be lashed like the Quran says, not stoned to death.
