Despite what some believe; it's not really Perso-Aryan-Nationalists behind the protests. Quite the contrary

Iran recently erupted in country-wide protests.
Anti-government protestors turned to the same target: the wealthy elite.
Iranian millennials hardly keep their wealth a secret, especially in the age of social media.

Iran recently erupted in country-wide protests that brought out both anti- and pro-government forces.

The demonstrators in Iran mobilized against everything from the government to the economic woes of the country. Gradually, across the country, anti-government protestors turned to the same target: a wealthy elite that has reaped the benefits of a top-down theocratic regime.

At least a part of this seems to have been spurred by a new openness from Iranian millennials, who hardly keep their wealth a secret, especially in the age of social media.

"When the occasional Maserati roars through the crowded streets of Tehran, past crowded buses and shabby domestic sedans, pedestrians sometimes unleash streams of curses in its wake," Shashank Bengali and Ramin Mostaghim write in the Los Angeles Times.

The LA Times used the popular "Rich Kids of Tehran" Instagram account as an example, where "attractive 20-somethings flaunt $1,000 Hermes sandals and frolic poolside at lavish mansions in a capital where, perhaps in another part of town, the desperate hawk their own kidneys to feed their families."

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

They should do that in Pakistan as well. Nothing comes close to the extravagance I saw (and experienced/benefitted from) during my almost 15 years there.

I had forgot all about that site. Im surprised it is still up and going! I remember a controversy about it a few years ago with Iranian establishment people criticizing and threatening to arrest those people or something like that. They must have unblocked it inside Iran. These are the children of the very top of the regime. Nobody in Iran can make that much money outside of the regime's top circles. Iran is such an economically corrupt country it is impossible for non-regime insiders to have these luxaries.

They think they are showing the rest of the World 'another side of Iran'. They are wrong. They are showing common Iranians what the highest corruption in the Khomeinist Republic looks like.

The luxuries you experienced must have revolved around playing X-Box and eating too many samosas ...hit the gym dude.

some of the pictures I saw disgust me and make me cringe, these kids are like third rate imitations of the most trashy people you can find in the West. Like of all things to imitate ....couldn't they imitate like Edward Witten or John Nash (minus the Schizophrenia in Nash's case lol)?

Yes the shallowness and inferiority complex reeks through this 'Rich Kids of Tehran' account. I wonder if some of these people even realize that their private pictures have been taken and put up on there, or maybe they send them in themselves...

Anyway time will tell if this corrupt Khomeinist elite will survive the coming storms brewing in the underclass and middle class of Iranian society. I dont think rioters will be forgiving if they ever reach those northern Tehran neighbourhoods one day.

Maybe we should spread it around, stir a 2nd Iranian revolution. Teach the Wilayat Fiqah a good lesson for what they did to Syria and Afghanistan.

                  They already know:

Why Iran Is Protesting - The New York Times

"Unlike during the first decades of the post-revolutionary Iran, the rich now heedlessly flaunt their wealth. Until the mid-2000s, the gentlemen’s agreement among the embezzlers held that they keep a modest appearance at home and launder their money in Dubai and Toronto. In the most famous case, Mahmoud Reza Khavari, the former managing director of Bank Melli, made off with hundreds of millions of dollars and became a real estate mogul in Toronto. That generation cared about appearances and never dropped the veneer of fealty to the ideals of the 1979 revolution. Their millennial offspring, on the other hand, hardly care. Wealthy young Iranians act like a new aristocratic class unaware of the sources of their wealth. They brazenly drive Porsches and Maseratis through the streets of Tehran before the eyes of the poor and post about their wealth on Instagram. The photos travel across apps and social media and enrage the hardworking people in other cities. Iranians see pictures of the family members of the authorities drinking and hanging out on beaches around the world, while their daughters are arrested over a fallen head scarf and their sons are jailed for buying alcohol. The double standard has cultivated an enormous public humiliation."

Seems millennials are a failure everywhere not only here in the West. Afghanistan has a lot of problems but even nowadays, despite our messy state of affairs, wealthy people still care a bit about those in need.

This makes me a bit happy and confident about our country: our egalitarianism is resilient. No matter what our core values will survive.

indulgence is the first sign of social decay.
