  • Pakistan, Afghanistan stability intertwined: Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Thursday that a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan was in Pakistan's interest and that peace and stability of the two countries were intertwined.

The foreign minister expressed these views during his call-on to visiting Vice President of Afghanistan Mohammad Karim Khalili here on Thursday.

Referring to strong brotherly relationship existing between the two countries, the foreign minister reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to further strengthen its relations with Afghanistan.

He assured the Afghan vice president that Pakistan supports the road-map laid down by the Kabul Conference recently, and earlier, by the Afghan Peace Jirga.

Pakistan believes that the reconciliation and re-integration process has to be broad-based and Afghan-led, he added. Qureshi noted that the relationship between the two countries has entered into a new era of cooperation and hoped that both sides will show the necessary restraint to further consolidate this cooperation.

Pakistan has offered US $330 million for Afghanistan's reconstruction and has recently increased the number of scholarships for Afghan students from 1000 to 2000. About 6000 Afghan students are already enrolled in Pakistan's various Universities and Colleges.

The Afghan vice president expressed deep sympathies over the tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by torrential rains and floods in Pakistan.

The foreign minister thanked the Afghan government for providing four helicopters for rescue operations.

Thanking the government of Pakistan for its generous development assistance, the Afghan vice president said that the assistance indicates Pakistan's strong commitment to the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

He hoped that the cooperation that they have seen after the change of government in Pakistan will continue to expand further. He assured that the Afghan leadership is determined to strengthen this relationship.

The vice president also thanked the government and people of Pakistan for hosting the Afghan refugees and the offer the Government of Pakistan has made for the training of Afghan Police and Army officials.

Both leaders noted that the recently concluded negotiations on Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement will further strengthen expanding relations between the two countries. -APP

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

    The irony!

Pakistan helps Afghanistan with the foreign aid it receives, and Afghanistan helps Pakistan with the foreign aid it receives. Yet, the are thanking each other.

I think they forgot to thank the West.

You are right! The irony is that they are helping each other to keep each other alive just to torture each other.

          Exactly. You got my point.

They should stop giving each other lip service and do what really matters.

Optimism is one thing. Academic understanding of the situation and a touch of the understanding of how Allah works is another thing.

Pakistan and Afghanistan both need to come back to God, otherwise, they will both fall deeper and deeper in their problems by mixing Politics and religion in conniving ways.

The first thing these two states need to do is to separate church and state. Then we can talk.

Pakistan was not created by the British.

Pakistan is under siege by its hypocritical clergy who opposed the creation of a Muslim State for Muslims.

Pakistan needs to take care of these people, first, i.e. the clergy. Then the Pashtun of Pakistan should request to be separate from Pakistan or accept Pakistan as their legitimate government.

                      Of course it is.

You have to be under the state of Pakistan, otherwise, continue to suffer.

Pashtun are so proud that they rather suffer than to become the "ghulams" of Pakistan.

Yes, you are right, dearest brother.

That is why I said that they need to turn to God. It is pride that they won't submit themselves whole-heartedly to Allah.

Hence, they will continue to suffer.

Islam has the solution for the plight of the Pashtun, but until they don't realize that they have to let go of pride then nothing will change.

In 1893, when the Pashtun were divided, there was no war over it. When the government of Pakistan took over that land, the government of Afghanistan should not have meddled in the interior policies of Pakistan in 1948, and continued till now. Now Afghanistan is a disgrace to the world. They should have some shame and leave Pakistan to deal with their own problems, and Afghanistan should deal with its own problems.

The government of Afghanistan is a beggar themselves and has always been. What right did they have to give false hope to the Pashtun of Pakistan. The false hope is what has kept the Pashtun frozen in time.

I hope that our generation realize that Pashtunwali is very useless and very archaic. Proper adherence to Islam would bring the Pashtun into the modern age. It would give real hope for the Pashtun. It would make them understand the proper system of governance.
