Erdogan says Turkish military plans a safe zone in Syria

Analyst says Turkey may deploy of thousands of soldiers in Syria for years and increase risks of a confrontation with the Syrian forces
    Published: 16:11 September 19, 2016 Bloomberg

Ankara: Turkey plans to create a 5,000-square-kilometre safe zone in Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, deepening its involvement in one of the Middle East’s deadliest conflicts.
Erdogan said Turkey’s offensive inside Syria, which started on August 24 under operation Euphrates Shield, has already cleared “terrorist groups” from an area of about 900 square kilometres. The offensive will extend to the Daesh stronghold of Al Bab, which lies about 30km from the border, he said.

The size of the planned safe zone is about 85 times the size of Manhattan, making the operation one of Turkey’s largest foreign military interventions in modern history. Deepening the offensive will likely escalate its conflict with Daesh militants and Kurdish groups seeking autonomy in northern Syria.
Last month’s incursion started days after a suicide bomber said to be linked to Daesh killed at least 54 people at a wedding in the border city of Gaziantep.
Turkey’s goal “is likely to require the deployment of thousands of Turkish soldiers in Syria for years and increase risks of a possible military confrontation with the Syrian forces”, Nihat Ali Ozcan, a strategist at the Economic Policy Research Foundation in Ankara, said by telephone on Monday.
Turkey, which hosts about 3 million refugees from Syria’s civil war, has long advocated the establishment of a buffer zone on the Syrian side of the border to help contain the human flight and stop deadly rocket attacks by Daesh on Turkish towns. Clearing Daesh from border areas west of the Euphrates river could seal the Turkish frontier and allow allied forces to speed up planning of a major offensive on Raqqa, the capital of Daesh’s self-proclaimed caliphate.
Erdogan also said Turkey will not allow Kurdish rebel fighters in Syria to link areas under their control along Turkey’s 911-km-long border with Syria. He criticised Kurdish fighters for not retreating from Manbij after taking it from Daesh.
Erdogan reiterated his call to train and equip pro-Western rebels fighting in Syria and to declare a no-fly zone to protect the safe haven, where he said Turkey can build communities to settle refugees. About 120,000 refugees are already living in camps run by Turkey’s pro-Islamic Humanitarian Aid Foundation, or IHH, just inside the Syrian border.
“We have been planning to build houses and social facilities in a safe zone in northern Syria,” Erdogan said. “It has not happened until now. But I hope we can do so from now on.”

When Hillary gets elected, there will be a full US backed NFZ in Syria in my opinion. Most of those who will enforce it will be Saudi/Turkish/Qatar F16s. It will start in the North and then extend.

Saudis, Turkish, and Qatari officials have already been meeting with Clinton staff.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

That was Obama's plan. The reason that Russia sent their jets in was to stop Obama from enforcing a no fly zone. American planes can shoot down Asads planes and Iranian planes but they cant shoot down Russian planes.

Obama was never serious about Syria. He did not support the Syrian opposition or impose a No Fly Zone out of respect to what he called "Iranian equities" in Syria(and Iraq). Not only that Obama Admin has pressured traditional US allies such as Saudi Arabia and Turkey to refrain from giving MANPADS to the Syrian opposition. Qatar did so anyway via Turkey. Syria was held hostage to the Iran nuclear talks before and after the Iran nuclear deal was signed. The Iran nuclear deal was Obama's hoped legacy act. All indications (especially after Speaker Paul Ryan's recent bill) point to the next US Congress nullifying and canceling the deal.

Read the next thread I post.

I think if Hillary is elected, two areas she will address regarding Russia, 1) Syria and 2) Ukraine.

The advanced US MANPADS (FIM-92J) can neutralize Russian aircraft. Russian aircraft appears advanced because Obama has refused to arm the Syrian Opp and he has also restricted Turkey and Saudi Arabia from doing so too. Hence, the reason Russia has a free hand to fly freely in Syrian skies undisturbed. Her policy page indicates she will be providing those to Syrian opposition. It also talks about a NO FLY ZONE although that assumes Russian threats are meaningless. I believe the fact that Russia did not even defend Assad regime from the "mistaken" airstrike is proof that they are all talk, and can only help Assad commit genocide of Syrian Sunnis. Russia also has been too afraid to stop Israeli jets from carrying out airstrikes against the Assad regime. Many of the Israeli airstrikes are right in Damascus, right in the the so-called air defense zone Russia has established with S-400 systems. Now, I am not saying they don't have the ability to stop Israel, they just lack the courage and will. The last time Russia (Soviet Union) and Israel were in an air conflict, Israel wiped out the whole Russian air fleet (READ: Operation Rimon). Israel's strength is mostly due to their brazen actions, and not necessarily their US technology. Keep in mind, Israel uses the same F16s that Turkey and Saudi Arabia have, but neither Turkey nor Saudi Arabia have struck Assad bases/IRGC forces, Hezbollah terrorists like Israel has. The difference is in courage and bold actions.

Second, is Ukraine. She has made it quite clear since Russia took Crimea that she will arm the Ukrainian army with defensive and offensive weapons.
