News agency claims Israel fired missiles across border
Israel allegedly fired missiles at a senior Syrian military official but failed to kill him, the Iranian Fars news agency reported on Friday.
According to Fars, two missiles targeted the convoy of Majid Heymoud, commander of First Battalion of Golan Regiment but did not hurt him.
Jabhat al-Nusra militants then tried to kill Heymoud, Fars claimed.
Israel made no comment on the Fars report.
The report came after Israeli air force on Monday carried out a strike in southern Syria in response to a stray mortar that landed in the Israeli Golan Heights earlier in the day.
No injuries were reported on either side. The Syrian government said Israel had fired rockets from drones that damaged a residential building.
Earlier this month the IDF said that it attacked two Syrian army targets in retaliation for stray gunshots fired at the security fence on the northern border.
And on July 17, Israel fired two Patriot missiles at an unidentified drone that entered Israeli airspace from Syria. The missiles failed to intercept the unmanned aircraft and it returned to Syrian airspace.
Since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, the Golan Heights have been tense, with a growing number of mostly stray rockets and mortar rounds hitting the Israeli side, prompting the occasional armed response.
In addition to retaliatory strikes, Israel acknowledged for the first time earlier this year that it has also carried out strikes against suspected arms transfers to Lebanon's Hezbollah militants.
